We chanced upon Monsieur Jean when we were on our way to Euralille for some shopping. We didn’t know it was on Michelin Guide 2017 until I google for some inspiration for our daily dinner plan. And I must say, even if they aren’t on the prestigious guide, it is certain worth visiting. In short, we enjoyed the meal.
Monsieur Jean has a regular facade with a jungle shade of green among the stone wall as the facade; very pleasing to the sight. A little vibes of fairyland.
First impression was homely with Victorian interior design. Definitely not a theme that find favour with me.
At this restaurant, they offer largely French menu with some strange translation of English. So I suggest be adventurous.
Impressive complimentary bread was served right after we placed our order. There were 2 types were in the bread basket, plain baguette and lastly the fruit loaves which was my favorite.
Shortly, 2 impressive Amuse Broche were served.
We ordered the Dinner Set menu at €27 for 3 courses, Appetiser, Main and Dessert.
Since for each course, 2 dishes were offered, and I was dining with a colleague hence I have the opportunity to order one each. Beginning with the Appetiser, Raviole ouverte de Gambas and Emiette de Tourteau tiede. Both were seafood and equally delicious. The open raviole has a greeny sauce that enhanced the flavour while the cream sauce in the latter was the secret component for this tasty dish.
Duck Fillet was exceptionally flavourful with its natural taste emitted rather than seasoning. The compliment with fruits offering some zest to the flavour. Risotto was outstanding. Al dente rice with rich creamy sauce that doesn’t cause one to feel cloying.
Lastly was desert. A clear winner among the 2 was the Macaron chocolat passion. My dining partner who usually avoid Macaron loves this as it was lightly sweet and the chocolate and Passionfruit were perfect pairing. The other dessert was a deconstructed cheesecake. I love it though my colleague hate it due to the savoury hint among the sweet taste.
In France, I would recommend all to have wine as they are cheap and good, however, if you need to opt for Non-Alcoholic like me as I get heart palpitations from alcohol, there are limited option. At Monsieur Jean, you can choose the Limonade which my colleague loves it. This is a light saccharine lemon-flavoured fizzy drink. She wanted to get a dozen back home to enjoy if she finds them.
NAHMJ Verdict
We highly recommend this restaurant if you are in Lille. Great food at reasonable price. Moreover, it is located near the train station and city center.
