I have previously tried the food at Concorde Hotel but have never since re-visited. This round, 2 friends have been singing praises about the Spices Cafe Singapore Flavours Buffet Lunch and have invited me to go along with them. Hence I accepted their invitation to find out for myself if it is worthwhile. In a nutshell, yes, I will highly recommend especially to the Senior Folks.
It is relatively easy to locate Spices Cafe at Concorde Hotel, once you are at the lobby. Perhaps locating the lobby from street level is more difficult.
Interior though sleek, isn’t modern. It has a taste of the 80s design.
Spices Cafe Singapore Flavours Buffet Lunch
Since it is the Spices cafe Singapore Flavours Buffet Lunch, expect a mixed of local dishes with lots of Peranakan cuisines on the buffet table.
Live Station
As always, my favourite is the “Live” station. At the Spices cafe Singapore Flavours Buffet Lunch, there are 2 of such station. One prepare the Nonya Laksa & Teochew Fish Porridge. The Nonya Laksa is light in spice and mild in spiciness. If you want the cockles, you need to request from the chef. The default is without. The latter reminds me of those serve in the food centre, pretty tasty, though it seems artificially sweetened with MSG.
Next is the Popiah ‘Live’ Station. A chef is at the station to help diner to customise their desire number of Popiah.
Lastly is the Rojak, a self-service station. Though the service crew will at time “fry” the Rojak for you should you request them to do so.
If you want to hands-on however have no idea what to do, you could refer to the recipe listed on the table. The ferment prawn paste was quite concentrated which was good. A good variety of fruits such as Pineapple, Cucumber, Green Mango, Turnip, Guava and Rose Apple are available.
It was so yummy. Loving the Rojak.
Peranakan Spread
Nonya Chap Chye is surely present. A dish that we won’t want to miss at Peranakan meal.
Assam Prawn tasted more like a sweet sauce prawn. Overall, it was tasty.
Sambal Sotong was lightly chewy and I didn’t find it spicy at all.
Ikan Nanas was mediocre.
Mutton Rendang and Babi Buah Keluak were also at the table.
A bowl full Buah Keluak is available for diners to indulge.
I love the blue streak on the Nonya Bak Chang, making the rice look more appetising. It is a shame that little filling was hidden beneath the abundant glutinious rice.
And not to be missed is the Pork Satay. One of my favourite item at the Spice Cafe Lunch Buffet. Aside the peanut sauce, it comes with the pineapple sauce too. Other than pork, Chicken Satay is the other option.
Local Spread
Moving over to the local spread, 2 soups were available. First is the Water Cress with Pork Rib Soup.
Next is the Tee Toh Soup.
Stir-fried Flower Crab with Chilli Sauce and Stir-fried Hong Kong Chye Sim with Mushroom are a also available. However I find it a pity that they use Flower Crab instead of Sri Lankan Crab.
If you enjoy the Tau pok, Dough Fritters and cuttlefish, these are also available to compliment the Rojak.
Desserts
Finally, to the section I love most. The Dessert!
A medley of Nonya Kueh and desserts are available.
Potong (Ice Cream Stick) are also available such as Red Bean, Sweet Corn and Coconut.
Of all the desserts, my favourite is the Durian Pengat. I would glad forego the rest like I did at the buffet lunch at Asian Market Cafe @ Fairmont Singapore.
Price & Time
Spice Cafe Singapore Flavours Buffet Lunch is available daily from 12pm to 2.3pm. For Adult is at $36.00++ while Child is at $17.00++ (3 – 12 years old). Lastly, good news for Senior Citizens, you get to enjoy at $26.00++ (above 55 years old).
NAHMJ Verdict
Spices Cafe Singapore Flavours Buffet Lunch serves a good variety of spread and since there is a special price for the Senior Citizens, it is certainly attractive for them to gather at the Concorde Hotel over delicious food.
