Flaming Don 烤丼 is the latest dining concept by Creative Eateries to introduce at Bugis+. In case, you do not know, the crowd favourite Suki-ya, Bangkok Jam and the fun Rocku with delicious food are also by the same group.
Per the name, one would very much guessed that they are serving rice bowl. And indeed, this is the theme served; with about 15 types of rice bowl to select. We were informed that the kitchen at Flaming Don is helmed by true-blue Japanese Chef.
At this casual eatery concept, every steps is self-service; from ordering via a horizontal ordering monitor, which we last seen at Alakai Poke at Everton Park, to collection of food and returning the cutlery. This would certainly solve the shortage of manpower in F&B industry challenge and to offer a more competitive pricing of the food. I suppose this contributed to nothing beyond $20.
They offer free-flow of soup. If diners are planning to get drinks, at $2.90, you get free-flow too. To my surprise, the soup was delicious.
Offering a total of 11 sides ranging from $2.90 to $4.90 which is very affordable. Among which we tried the Chicken Karaage ($4.90) and Agedashi Tofu ($4.90). These sides are great for sharing and to kick-start a meal.
Beef lovers could go for our choice of Australian Wagyu Don ($19.90) and Signature Flaming Beef Don ($17.90). There are more beef choices – Roast Beef Don ($15.90) and Teriyaki Steak Don ($14.90).
If diners are in the mood for pork, Japanese Pork Hamburger Don ($14.90) and Miso Buta Yaki Don ($9.90) are 2 great choices. Other selection include Pork Collar Don ($9.90)
For chicken fan, Chicken Combo Don ($12.90) and Signature Flaming Chicken Don ($9.90), both extremely tasty are equally great option. Alternatively, Karaage Don ($12.90) and Chicken Curry Don ($9.90)
If you prefer fish, there is only one choice, the Salmon Don ($13.90).
For the vegetarian, Ma Po Tofu Don ($12.90), Mushrom Tofu Don ($12.90). If you are looking for Korean flavour, opt for the Bibimbap Don ($8.90).
A total of 4 ramen is offered. Besides the Char Siew Ramen ($14.90) we tried which I love it, the rest of the selection are Flaming Chicken Ramen ($12.90), Spicy Kimchi Seafood Ramen ($16.90) and Dry Minced Meat Ramen ($12.90). The ramen is eggy with a very light chewy texture. In addition, it with-stand soaking in hot broth.
NAHMJ Verdict
The Don served at Flaming Don were delicious though I am sure some will find it a little salty. I love the ramen too, as good as the Don. The best part is that I counted a total of 5 Don under $10 – Bibimbap Don ($8.90), Signature Flaming Chicken Don ($9.90), Chicken Curry Don ($9.90), Pork Collar Don ($9.90) and Miso Buta Yaki Don ($9.90).
I am wondering if they will come up with a DIY Don in the future.
