Wen Jing Ge Restaurant serves delicacies of Shanghai, Cantonese, Sichuan and Huai Yang cuisines. It is one of the many famous restaurants located along The Bund. This restaurant is perched on the fifth level of the Waldorf Astoria at number 18 of The Bund. The side facing The Bund were little windows providing sneak preview to diners of the Financial Centre skyline view, nothing impressive though.
Interior was tastefully decorated with lots of art pieces strategically placed throughout the restaurant, from the reception to the walkway to the dinning area. Only finest furniture that could reflect the classy Chinese theme was placed in the restaurant.
We were at the Wei Jing Ge for the set dinner offered under the Chinese Restaurant Week Spring 2017 Winners’ Edition. The set menu was offered at RMB 278 excluding 15% service charge.
Started with the Combination appetizers consisting of Marinated seasonal vegetable with spring onion 葱油莴笋, Honey glazed barbecued pork 密汁叉烧, Sea cucumber with chili sauce 麻辣海参 and Salmon roll with pickled radish 酸萝卜三文鱼卷. Generally, all the 4 items were mediocre.
None of us enjoyed the Double-boiled sea whelk soup with mushroom and vegetable 黑菌菜胆炖海螺. As we find the taste weird. In short, I didn’t think the flavour complemented each other well but created a strong unpleasant pungent flavour. Perhaps it is an acquired taste.
Nothing wow for the Baked prawn with ginger and chives 姜葱焗大虾. In fact, it was a shame that the prawn weren’t very fresh.
Tender Pan-fried Australian beef with potato 煎澳洲牛小排配土豆 was very much about it.
Flavourful Seaonal Simmered Goose Web with Mushroom and seasonal vegetable 鹅掌鲜菇时蔬 was the best among all the dishes served in this set dinner. The braised were absorbed beyond the skin of the goose web. Importantly, the collagen melt in the mouth.
Steamed Glutinous rice with taro and preserved meat 香芋腊味糯米饭 was one of the better dish among the dishes served. There were fragrance of the taro and preserved meat.
Ending the meal with Seaonal Fruit Plate 合时鲜果盘 and Double-boiled Peach Gum Soup with “Tian Shan” Lotus 桃胶炖天山莲子. Personally, I find serving fruit as a dessert were totally insincere. Luckily, the lotus sweet soup was also part of the dessert. It was pleasing, nothing out of the extraordinary though.
Overall dinning experience at Wei Jing Ge Restaurant was underwhelming as we expected a higher standard from them.
