Butter Bean @ VivoCity, the second outlet after Funan is now open. The latest concept by BreadTalk Group, a fun and uplifting brand, redefine traditional Nanyang coffee to appeal to the younger generation.

The concept has sunshine yellow as the brand colour. This colour is extended to the entire interior space as well.

At Butter Bean, Order and payment are contactless. Simply scan a QR code to order, pay and then collect the food.

The first drink that I tried is the BBrulee Kopi Latte ($3.20). Similar to the latte, concentrated Nanyang Kopi is added to fresh milk and crowned with signature salted cream. I am surprised that the savoury hint blend well with the kopi. If you prefer, you can order the Teh variation, BBrulee Teh Latte ($3.20).

The G.M Kopi BBliss ($3.50), an ice blended drink, is another recommended drink.

Other specialty local beverages include the refreshing Lychee Orange Tea ($3.50), the BB Rose ($3.50).

There are a total of 8 open-faced Toast ($2 onwards per toast). The thick butter toast has a similar taste profile to the Brioche, fluffy and yet dense, with a crisp edge. Some of the popular selections are PB&J and Say Cheese.

If you are looking for something wholesome, you can select the sandwiches – B.F.F Battered Fried Fish ($4.60), which I tried. The entire combination is so tasty. I believe it is the sauce that spice up the flavour. I am planning to try the C.F.C Crispy Fried Chicken ($4.60) at my next visit.

Four rendition of local favourites which include Laksa Love ($6.80), Curry On Sunshine ($6.80), Taiwan-inspired Braise Me Up ($6.80) and lastly the Hey You Hae Mee ($6.80). All food are pork and lard free.

NAHMJ Verdict

I am in awe with the creativity of the team who concocted the Nanyang Kopi in a espresso style. The entire local kopi and food are elevated to a cafe standard.

Have you ever needed a cake like really last minute. Like in an hour time, because you forgot someone’s birthday until a friend reminded you. Or maybe your boss needed a cake to send to an associate. There might be many more reasons to that last minute cake and CakeDelivery.SG comes to the rescue.

I was recently introduced to CakeDelivery.SG. It was managed by a team of passionate bakers and I was told they can deliver on the same day, midnight and overnight. I find it too good to be true. And my million dollar question was, does the cake taste good. This is a very important factor for me. Nevertheless, I brace myself for the worse and I tried their service. I ordered an Ondeh Ondeh Cake.

I was surprised that website was easy to use. One of the online website with the minimum click and I could complete my order.

Once completed, I received a confirmation email in my mailbox.

What I was impressed is that it did arrived within the 1 hour slot that I selected. It dispelled my skeptic about their service.

When I opened the big white plain box, I was a bit disappointed to see a plain ugly, very greenish cake. I am a big fan of Ondeh Ondeh Cake, after tasting the cake, I must say it met my expectation. I gave some to another Ondeh Ondeh fan to try and he likes it.

The sponge cakes were sandwiched with Gula Melaka and gula melaka infused desiccated coconut. Though I would prefer to have solely gula melaka.

NAHMJ Verdict

After this positive first experience, I see myself ordering from them, especially when I needed a last minute cake.

Pizza Hut celebrates their 10th Cheesiversary with a new Cheesy 7 flavour, the Cheesy 7 Durian Pizza (Cheesy 7D)! When I heard of it, I can’t wait to try as I love Durian.

Cheesy 7 Durian Pizza

The famous Cheesy 7 pizza comprises a blend of 7 cheeses: provolone, mozzarella, gouda, cheddar, monterey jack, romano, parmesan and cream cheese. Topping it off with the ‘Asian Cheese’, Durian, the Cheesy 7D pizza was born.

The initial thought of having both my favourite ingredients, cheese and durian, on pizza sounds weird and unimaginable. Even the smell was so pungent and at the beginning was unpleasant. Once the 2 flavours landed on the tastebud, heavenly was the description. I didn’t stop at one slice but went on for my second serving. We love the Cheesy 7D pizza.

More Durian Items

Fans of Durian rejoice. In addition to the Cheesy 7D Pizza, Pizza Hut will introduce 2 other items with durian on it in late October. First is the Durian Kaya Pull Apart and Durian Kaya Tart. Both items has generous amount of durian sat on luscious aromatic Kaya jam on either toast or tart. These 2 Durian items are thoughtfully crafted by Pizza Hut.

We find both the items a little too sweet if were to indulge in more. However, I am bias since it has Durian on it. I will say go for it.

Promotion

50% OFF any 2 pizzas for Delivery and 1 for Takeaway! Numerous Meal Deals as well as 40% OFF regular Cheesy 7D pizza with any a la carte mains when you Dine-in.

NAHMJ Verdict

The marriage of 2 pungent food resulted in such a wonderful pleasing flavour with result that is amazing. It was love at first bite. I will return for the Cheesy 7D Pizza.

Koung’s Wanton Mee @ JEM is now opened. If you are one of those staying in the west who crave for their famous delicious Wanton Mee, you will be in cloud nine for this great news.

Selling the Wanton Mee from pushcart in the beginning to its first outlet at Geylang and now a second outlet by their 2nd generation, that’s a total of 56 years.

The Wanton Noodle available as dry or soup comes in small ($4.80) and big ($5.80). I opted the dry version with chilli sauce. Amount of noodles for a small portion was extremely generous. For the dry option, it comes with a bowl of soup and 3 wanton.

On the menu, there are 6 sides. I will surely order the tender flavourful Roast Char Siew ($5).

I couldn’t resist anything fried, so I will also turn to the crispy Fried Wanton ($4/$5). Koung’s rendition has a thicker skin wrap as compared to the rest, hence you will find the wanton extra crispy.

Fried Ngoh Hiang ($5.80) is exclusive to JEM outlet. The entire texture is relatively smooth as the minced meat used in the roll is extremely fine.

Desserts are also exclusive to JEM outlets. Diners can opt for the cold desserts – Cheng Teng ($2.40), Jelly Bee ($3.40) or the hot desserts ($2) – Barley with Gingko Nut, Green Bean Soup and Black Glutinous Rice.

The new menu by Chef Mariana Campos D’ Almeida is full of surprises. In a nutshell, I really love it. I have been to The Butcher’s Wife numerous time since it first started, I felt the food is getting better under the helm of each new chef.

Chef Mariana Campos D’ Almeida is Brazil-born, Paris-trained after graduated from the prestigious Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon, France. That’s explain a lot about her style and dishes.

New Menu By Chef Mariana Campos D’ Almeida

In this new menu by Chef Mariana Campos D’ Almeida, there are so much of unexpected elements. What brilliant is that the Chef uses many of familar local ingredients in her dishes.

Snack

Beginning with Dadinhos de Sago with dragon fruit chutney ($11). These little cubes is made from a commonly found ingredients in our local dessert, sago. It was unexpected that sago is used in a savoury dish. I highly recommend this for a start.

Mini Corn on Fire, pecorino, smoked paprika & black garlic sauce ($10) is equally delicious. The smokiness complemented the sweetness which was amazing.

Diners can pair with an aromatic white wine, Laurent Cazottes – Adele 2018, with almond and acacia flowers and pear flavour.

Starter

Subsequently, choose a handful of starters. First was Our Own Goat Cheese ($17) drenched with raw honey & ”Oh My Goodness!” Buckwheat and Walnut bread. A simple delight.

Crispy Pig’s Ears ($21) with red dates sauce, pickled ginger flower & wild pepper leaves. I never imagined that someone would turned pig’s ears, an ingredient which will put a lot of diners off into a crispy delicious dish.

A suggested wine to go along with the starters is the Camin Larredya – Part Davant 2018, also a white. Filled with citrus, peach and mineral note.

Mains

It’s so smart of Chef to add the blue dye into the Blue Pea Flower Naan Sandwich ($20). The entire combination elevated the flavour.

Sweet Potato Gnocchi ($22) mushrooms, pea shoots, rosemary butter & parmesan is a savoury dish with natural sweetness from the various different ingredients.

A light fruity red, Domaine Les Tete – Tete Red 2018 is a good one for the 2 mains. It is a very easy on the palate red.

The Grilled Octopus ($27) at The Butcher’s Wife is easily one of the best, tender and tasty. Accompanied with manioc puree, white kimchi & grilled broccolin.

For the beef lover, don’t miss the Wagyu Picanha ($38) with burnt cauliflower puree, green papaya salsa & banana powder. Though some find it too rare.

Dominique Andiran – Magnus 2018, a medium body fruity red with aromatic berries, rustic hint of spice is great with the beef and octopus.

I would highly recommend the Banana Leaf Seabass ($29). By the side are the plantains puree, shrimp sambal & grilled lady fingers. The key side that made the dish highly tasty is the shrimp sambal. I thought it was a very smart add.

Dessert

End of with Lemongrass Panna Cotta ($13) is a must. Kalamansi curd & pineapple and the crispy roll was a perfect add to the gingerly aroma panna cotta. It not only added various dimension to the flavour but also texture.

Lastly, is the Warm Chocolate Cake ($14). At a glance, it is a boring dish. The surprise is the caramel-miso ice cream and pili nuts which has a white chocolate note.

A sweet fruity Camin Larredya – Costat Darrer ‘les Grains Des Copains 2017 to round up the meal with the dessert.

NAHMJ Verdict

It is rare that I enjoyed every dishes that I tried. I see myself going back to try out other dishes soon.

Sushi Tei First Plant-based Menu is available from now till 13 October 2020. I am not a fan of plant-based food. I am always skeptical of the taste. But ever since I tried the Impossible Beef, I was won over and am always looking forward to such dishes.

This plant-based dishes are part of the Kenko Feast Menu. These healthier selection are made possible through the collaboration with Country Foods and Growthwell Group.

Sushi Tei First Plant-based Menu Highlight

Amazing Shokubutsu Fish Nugget ($9.80) that tastes like the really fish nugget. If I wasn’t told that these are made from konnyaku extract I would certainly mistaken them for the real ones.

Sushi Tei First Plant-based Menu - Shokubutsu Fish Nugget ($9.80)
Shokubutsu Fish Nugget ($9.80)

Rejoice for vegetarian and vegan diners, you can enjoy the Shokubutsu Ebi Roll ($9.80) and Shokubutsu BBQ Ham Roll ($7.80). The sesame seed and seaweed peppered at the circumference of the rolls elevated the flavours.

The last item on Sushi Tei plant-based menu is my favourite, Shokubutsu Curry Omurice ($13.80). You can call me bias because I love eggs. Velvety curry loaded with mushrooms and tender ‘beef’ made from mushrooms too.

Inside the Shokubutsu Curry Omurice

End of the meal with a sweet note of Roasted Pistachio Ice Cream ($4).

NAHMJ Verdict

Xin Tekka is a large food hall flanked between two MRT stations, Little India and Rochor, features comback restaurateurs and well-known brands, making it easy to go. Some well known brands are Pang’s Hakka Noodle, Casa Bom Vento Express, RW Express, Rong Guang BBQ Seafood and Alhambra Satay. There are a total of 9 stalls offering a range of food.

Alhambra Satay

For those who remember the former Satay Club in Singapore, would have fond memories about Alhambra Satay. Their satay based on Javanese recipes serve satay in Chicken, Beef and Mutton (10 stick satay with rice cake at $9).

They serve an elusive dish, Kentang Ball ($6), deep-fried mashed potato with minced beef in the centre with rich soto ayam.

Casa Bom Vento Express

Chef Lionel serves the Eurasian-Peranakan food with the popular dishes like Tian of Ayam Buah Keluak with Blue Pea Rice ($7.70) and Nonya Dry Laksa ($8.20) on the menu.

Da Boomz Delights

A stall offering Malay dessert and kueh and one of the popular item is the Apam Balik, a Malay version of pancake. The Da Boomz Delights’ Biskopi is a must, though sweet but addictive.

Hosay’s Delicacy

I really love the Signature Mee Pok ($7.20) serve here. The punchy vinegar and chilli make the dish extra tasty. On a rainny day, best turned to the Teochew Special Porridge ($7.20).

Liang Ji

Chef Dominic Neo specialities include Char Kway Teow ($5 – regular, $7 – large) and innovative dishes such as Cheesy Floss Carrot Cake that won Singapore Food Master award and Spicy Hae Bee Hiam Carrot Cake. The other must try is the Hae Bee Hiam Fried Rice ($6-regular, $8-large).

Morning Boss

The only beverage stall run by two second-generation owners serving traditional drinks such as Kopi with Butter ($2), Pearly Honeydew ($2.50), Pearly Bandung ($2.50) and other trendy drinks such as Iced Pearl Milk Tea ($2.80) and Ice Milo Boba ($3).

Pang’s Hakka Noodle

Chef Pang Kok Keong’s award winning Pang’s Hakka Noodles ($7) is served at the stall. This is certainly a dish not to be missed. the Hakka Stuffed Tofu Soup ($4) is also a must try.

Rong Guang BBQ Seafood

For those who frequent Makansutra Gluttons by the Bay previously would remember them serving their tasty Portuguese Sambal Stingray (from $16). They too serve the in-trend Seafood in A Bag ($98.90). In the bag, there are 4 types of seafood – crabs, prawns, clams and scallop with Chilli Crab sauce. You will be glad to know it comes with fried mantous.

RW Express

There is no lack of Indian food in the area but the best is here serving delicious Tandoori Chicken ($10-half) and Mutton Biryani ($8). I love their food.

NAHMJ Verdict

After the first visit, I am determined to go back to Xin Tekka for the mouth-watering dishes – satay, biryani, mee pok, hakka noodles and … I seriously can’t wait.

Dashi Master Marusaya, located at Roberston Quay, facing the serene Singapore River is fame for their Dashi Shabu Shabu which I tried previously and I love it. With three private rooms, the 90-seater Dashi Master Marusaya is perfect for business lunches and a casual meal with your loved ones.

Dashi Master Marusaya is the flagship restaurant of the Marusaya group specialising in traditonal Dashi Shabu. Founded in 1962, Marusaya is a wholesaler dedicated to Katsuobushi (dried bonito) for professional use. In addition to Dashi Master Marusaya, the group also owns TEN Sushi at Robertson Quay and Monte Risaia at Duxton.

This round I returned for Dashi Master Marusaya’s NEW Lunch Sets, ranged from $16++ to $58++.

Be prepared to be spoiled for choice. Diners can choose Marusaya Udon (Hot or Cold) Set Lunch; Dashi Shabu Set Lunch, a must if it is your first visit. Their dashi is 100% natural and does not contain MSG or other artificial seasoning. Alternatively, go for the Rice Bowl Set Lunch, Tantalising Set Lunch.

New on the menu is the Hot Toban. The Wagyu ($48++) and Seafood Toban ($48++) are both highly recommended.

Diners could choose 3 sides when ordering the set lunch.

Lastly, if you are in the mood, go for the luxurious Shokado Bento. Comes with Dashi Master Marusaya’s signature appetisers, chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg), tempura, grilled fish, meat, two kinds of sashimi, small rice bowl (Salmon and Ikura),and small udon (hot)

NAHMJ Verdict

If you can’t decide what to choose, you are not the only person. Perhaps the best way is to visit Dashi Master Marusaya on several occasions to try them all.
