Chef David Almany who was previously from Osteria Mozza in Marina Bay Sands now opened his own restaurant Angeleno at Gemmill Lane, an area where it is densely populated by bars and restaurants.
As I knew it was a famous chef who is helming Angeleno, I must say I seriously have high expectation of the dishes whipped from the kitchen.
The restaurant interior was relatively minimalist with some sense of Italian restaurant feel. There were nice music. And I happened to have 2 musicians among my guests, and so they appreciated and enjoyed.
Menu was Italian food with an American twist. That’s how I would describe as one would find food like American Cold Cuts on the menu. This is another Italian restaurant that you won’t find pizza if you are craving for one.
Rustic bread (I think it was sourdough) were accompanied with 2 olive and oil dip. One was more fragrance than the other which most of us preferred the more fragrance one.
As Angeleno pays tribute to the Red Sauce which refers to tomato based dishes. As such, such dishes are the highlight at the restaurant. I am not a fan of red sauce dishes. In fact, I would usually avoid them. But for a change, I am going to try them.
The first Red Sauce dish, highly recommended by the service crew, that we ordered was the Angeleno’s Meatball with anson mills wood-fired polenta ($22). This is such a wonderful dish. The meatball was flavourful with marinates and the red sauce does bring the dish to its best. When eaten with the polenta, that was simply heavenly.
Another highly recommended dish was the American & Italian Cold Cuts. There was a choice of 3 ($33) or 5 ($55) cold cuts selection. We went for three and our choices were Culatello, Prosciutto and coppa with bread. Each of us have our favourite selection of cold cuts. So I suppose, it is highly preferential.
Grilled Jumbo Prawns rosemary, fresh shell beans, radicchio ($32) was such an amazing dish too. It has a nice unique fragrance. It was prefectly grilled, not any under or over cooked.
Winter Squash & Goat Cheese Ravioli roasted mushrooms, brown butter, sage ($31) got thumbs up from all guest. For anyone who prefer savoury and sweet combination dishes, perhaps such as Salted Caramel would enjoy this dish to the max.
Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese ($31) using northern italian meat ragu is another red sauce dish. And bear in mind, I usually would avoid such dish but I do find this delish. But when compared with the Ravioli, I would still go for the latter. As I always have a soft spot for Ravioli.
All the pasta were made in house by Angeleno. There was an option of having it as appetizer or Mains. We ordered as appetizer.
Moving to the Mains, we ordered 3 dishes. First we have the Grilled USDA Prime NY Strip Steak with medium doneness ($65) has fried potatoes, onions, chimichurri by its side. Interestingly, my guest was so impressed with the fried potatoes more than the steak.
Grilled Whole Mediteranean Sea Bass ($75) was a Mains good for 2 person to share was the second Mains we ordered. Likewise, it was grilled to perfection. With the grilled lemon drizzled over the fish brought out the entire sweetness of the Sea Bass.
Our last Main was the Pan Roasted Scallops ($32). An absolute favourite among my guests.
We have a Charred Broccolini ($16) as our sides. I was blown away by this simple dish. The chilies, garlic and I suspect the key ingredient that made the dish so incredible was the italian fish sauce.
Finally, it was dessert time! As always, I am extremely excited when it comes to dessert.
From the Ariana’s Kitchen, Chocolate Pudding ($15) was one of our choice. A very rich and chocolaty pudding with candied almonds and dark bittersweet chocolate sauce. Chocolate lovers don’t miss this when you are at Angeleno. You will not regret for ordering this.
Meyer Lemon Semifreddo ($15) was equally good. There was an extremely good balance of sour and sweetness in the dessert.
Lastly was the special dessert of the day, the Pineapple Upside Down Cake ($15). Softy and fluffy pineapple cake paired with Coconut Gelato was another astounding dessert.
NAHMJ Verdict
Angeleno was such an outstanding restaurant. Each and every dish was almost perfect. From the sharing plates to the Mains and finally dessert were amazing. All my guests enjoyed.
NAHMJ would recommend the American & Italian Cold Cuts, Angeleno’s Meatball, Winter Squash & Goat Cheese Ravioli, Pan Roasted Scallops and end the meal with Chocolate Pudding and Meyer Lemon Semifreddo.
One other point to note, do make a reservation when you are planning to dine at the Angeleno restaurant. As on a Tuesday night, the restaurant was at its full capacity.
