You know Spring has arrived when you begin to see seasonal vegetables in the market. To celebrate this season of new beginning, the German Beer Bar and Restaurant has crafted a White Asparagus Special At Brotzeit available islandwide but for a limited period of time.

You may not know beside the green one we usually see in the market, there are violet and white ones too. Though not common in Singapore, they are readily available in European countries like Austria, Germany and France.

No matter the colours, they are the same vegetable. The Asparagus are white because they are not exposed to the sun since they are grown underground, covered by a thick layer of mounded dirt or even black plastic. When they bask in the sun, first they turn violet and finally green.

White Asparagus Special At Brotzeit

It excite me whenever I see these highly revered White Asparagus. I remembered the jubilation at last year feast of this perennial vegetable at Pool Grill at the Marriott Singapore and my exultation when I bought them back from France in March this year. Savouring the White Asparagus Special At Brotzeit is no exception, it thrilled me.

Brotzeit created 7 mouthwatering White Asparagus dishes from Appetizers/Soup to Main and dessert. There is also one White Wine for pairing these 7 dishes.

Spargelsuppe ($9)

If you have been reading my post, you will know I avoid soup. However, I polished the entire bowl despite it was a cream soup. It was surprisingly light and I could savour the sweetness of the White Asparagus. And I thought it was extremely smart of the chef to add in julienne of ham to give the savoury hint and slices of white asparagus to give the crunch and at the same time, intensified the flavour.

Spargel Im Speckmantel ($9)

Dressing Asparagus in bacon though it is mainstream, it never failed to impress the diner’s palate.

Der Spargel-Klassiker ($28)

Traditionally the preparation of White Asparagus is to steam and chow it down with Hollandaise Sauce. To spice it up, zest it with any of the sides; Black Forest Ham ($5), Gammon Ham ($5), Smoked Salmon ($5) and Poached Egg ($2).

Spargel Mit Barramundi ($32)

If you are looking for something more substantial, you can opt to have the Spargel with Barramundi. At Brotzeit, they used a locally sourced.

Spargel Mit Rinderfilet ($39)

Alternatively, if you prefer red meat, opt to pair the White Asparagus with Tenderloin instead.

I didn’t get to try the lat 2 items, the Spargelplatte ($79) (White Asparague Platter) comprises Classice White Asparagus (400g) served with black forest, gammon ham, smoked salmon, poached eggs and parsley potatoes with hollandaise sauce. But I could imagine that it would be similar to the the Classic White Asparagus dish.

And it was ashamed to have missed the Zitronen Kase Creme Mit Spargel ($10), the sole dessert on the menu. I must return for this extremely intriguing item. White Asparagus on lemon cheese tart, what an ingenious concept.

Last but not least, Brotzeit has also selected a Wine White to pair with your favourite Spargel dish, 100 Hugel Weisser Burgunder ($14 per glass/$58 per bottle). Light, rounded and in between sweet and dry, very easy to drink wine.

Promotion

Enjoy $10 off PER RESERVATION with any White Asparagus main dish ordered by making your reservation at http://brotzeit.co/reservation/. Fill in the reservation details and enter promo code “MICHELLE”.

NAHMJ Verdict

Don’t missed the highly prized Spargel which you can only enjoy them once a year. If you pass the White Asparagus Special At Brotzeit by, you would have to wait till next year.

Beast & Butterflies @ M Social Singapore is the award-winning social dining concept that enlivens its all-day dining programme with new Asian-fusion dishes, innovative cocktails, and a refreshed menu format designed to satiate all manners of creature comforts.

After the revamped, the restaurant’s new menu is divided between two categories: ‘Beast’ and ‘Butterflies’. The former features hearty, robust dishes brimming with bold flavours and textures; while the latter shows restraint with lighter cooking styles intended to accentuate the natural flavours of fresh ingredients.

Tomato Latte (S$9++), it comes with frothy capsicum foam, crunchy bacon bits and bursts of basil oil pearls for a refreshing palate cleanser. The ingredients are healthy but taste is a bit unique.

Playful Asian flavours step to the fore at Beast & Butterflies At M Social Singapore - Tomato Latte (S$9++)

The Scallop Carpaccio (S$26++) — a generous starter of thinly sliced Hokkaido scallops treated to a yuzu and sesame marinade, topped with crispy garlic bits and fried shallots. The scallops are very fresh, the fried shallots give another layer of dimension.

Playful Asian flavours step to the fore at Beast & Butterflies At M Social Singapore - Scallop Carpaccio (S$26++)

Crispy Pork Knuckle (half portion S$26++; full portion S$36++) – The German-style pork knuckle, roasted to a crispy crackling exterior while remaining fall-off-the-bone tender, is complemented with a sesame-scented sauerkraut and two dipping choices—a spicy Thai nam jim sauce and a thick Peking-style hoisin sauce. I like the crispy skin – chef told us that they grill the pork knuckle instead of deep-frying it. That why it is not that oil and I can even finish the whole dish.

Playful Asian flavours step to the fore at Beast & Butterflies At M Social Singapore - Crispy Pork Knuckle (half portion S$26++; full portion S$36++)

Lobster Porridge (S$38++) – Teo Chew Style Porridge. Sitting the rice were sitting in a clear crab broth that was simmered for eight hours, the lobster and abalone rice porridge is infused with an intense umami goodness and topped with fried shredded ginger, scallions, crispy conpoy and bonito flakes. However, compared with Teo Chew Style porridge, I am still prefer the Cantonese style porridge which gives you skily-smooth texture.

Playful Asian flavours step to the fore at Beast & Butterflies At M Social Singapore - Lobster Porridge (S$38++)

Scallion Soy Barramundi (S$26++) – The firm, flaky barramundi is baked with spring onions and ginger, accompanied with sautéed Hong Kong choy sum, shimeiji mushrooms, U.S. asparagus and carrots. The Atlantic cod was deep-fried to a have quick crisp while retaining its delicate flesh, is coated with a gratifying gravy and goes along well with a crispy egg noodles or egg fried rice.

Meat lovers can satiate their beastly cravings with the Szechuan Lamb Steak (S$38++), a hunky lamb T-bone marinated with classic Sichuan flavours, served atop a coconut-infused sweet potato mash, broccolini and baby carrots. The sauce is a bit too sweet and the Sichuan flavors are not strong enough to elevate the taste, it was a bit of a letdown.

We tried two innovative desserts, Yam Brulée (S$12++) – a modern East-meets-West twist on the traditional Teochew yam paste dessert topped with a caramelised sugar carapace and coconut ice-cream. I love the yam paste, it is so smooth and delicious to eat.

The other is Chocoholic (S$12++), a chocolate dome that reveals tropical flavours of coconut and banana brought together by hot Malibu chocolate sauce. It is nicely presented, but the taste didn’t surprise me.

Fans of fresh German beers and grub rejoice! After a two-month makeover, the popular German microbrewery Paulaner Bräuhaus is back in action!

The iconic three-storey bar and restaurant reopens as Asia’s New Model Flagship Store with brand new interiors featuring a towering candy striped Maibaum (Mapypole) on level two.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Maypole

Highlights of the Updated Menu

Facing us with a brand new look, Paulaner Bräuhaus also made some updates to its menu while retaining their fresh brewed beers.

Beers

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Beer on Tap

While I generally don’t drink beers, I make an exception for German beers, especially when they are freshly brewed onsite and served on tap; they are also brewed according to “The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516” where only four ingredients (water, malt, hops and yeast) are used.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Weissbier Wheat Beer (S$16.80++ for 500ml)

There are three styles of fresh German beer on tap all year round at Paulaner Bräuhaus- Helles Pale Lager, Dunkel Dark Lager and Weissbier Wheat Beer. My choice of the day is Weissbier Wheat Beer ($16.80 for 500ml), the cloudy mild white beer with a fruity flavor that is easy to drink. I also chose it because it is supposed to pair well with most dishes.

Starters

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Pretzel Tree (S$13.90++)

For starters, we were recommended their savory Munich style pretzels. Since we were a big group, we ordered a Pretzel Tree (S$13.90++) to share. The Pretzel Tree consists of 4 warm pretzels that are seasoned with salt, served on a wooden tree stand. Baked fresh daily the traditional way, these pretzels are dipped in diluted lye before baking to give them the distinctive flavor and beautiful deep brown crust.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Obazda with pretzel (S$16.90++)

To complement the pretzels, we also ordered some cheese spreads Obazda with Pretzel (S$16.90++) and Paulaner Trio Fish (S$15.90++). Obazda is a Bavarian cream cheese made from Camembert, fresh butter and spices. For me, it is a tad too salty but some of my fellow diners loved it with the pretzels.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Pretzel Tree (S$13.90++) and Paulaner Fish Trio (S$15.90++)

Personally I preferred the Paulaner Trio Fish (S$15.90++) spreads comprising of (from left) red radish salad with smoked trout fillet, herring salad in cream cheese and sour cream and homemade smoked salmon in cream cheese. All three spreads are delicious with no unpleasant fishy taste at all. In particular, we loved the herring salad in cream cheese and sour cream so much that we kept it as a dip for our fries later on.

Mains

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Pork Knuckles (S$31.90++)

Since we are at a German eatery, the must order is the German classic Pork Knuckle (S$31.90++) served with saukerkraut and semmelknödel. It did not disappoint. Paulaner Bräuhaus’s rendition is a large bone-in pork knuckle marinated in a Bavarian spice blend, brushed with Paulaner beer then oven roasted for 2.5 hours to give it the super crispy skin and tender juicy meat. I can hear the crackling sound as my fellow diners bite into the pork knuckle. The sidekicks of saukerkraut and semmelknödel (traditional German bread dumpling) weren’t to my liking though.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Pork Schnitzel (S$25.90++)

Another delightful main that we enjoyed is the Pork Schnitzel (S$25.90++) served with French fries. Pork Schnitzel is a German pork chop where a thin slice of bone-less pork is coated in seasoned breadcrumbs then fried in butter. The pork chop is succulent without any unpleasant porky taste and pairs perfectly with the seasoned breadcrumbs. I also like that the pork though tender, did not taste like it was lazily tenderized with corn flour. Instead, the tenderness is likely a result of conscientious pounding.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Currywurst "Hot Paula" (S$12.90++)

Lastly, one of the things we must not miss while at a German establishment is their sausages. We decided to try the Currywurst “Hot Paula” (S$12.90++). When the six-inch long smoked pork sausage arrived in curry tomato chilli sauce looking long, hard and hot, we couldn’t resist a round of adult jokes as we tried to take a sexy photo of it! Taste wise, I like that the pork sausage is not too salty. However, I am not impressed with the curry sauce since it tasted mainly like tomato sauce to me.

Desserts

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Kaiserschmarm (S$14.90++)

To end the night, we had Apple Beignets (S$14.90++) and Kaiserschmarm (S$14.90++), both of which I enjoyed.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Visiting German Chef

Kaiserschmarm is a dessert of thick cut pancakes caramelised in a pan with butter and sugar. And when this arrived, Paulaner Brauhaus’s visiting German Chef made a special appearance to tell us how suitable this dessert is even for someone on a diet because “it has NO butter and NO sugar”! But of course that was a joke! You have to replace NO with EXTRA to get nearer the truth. Luckily for you, while I like it, you may not like it (hence saving calories)! This is because the Kaiserschmarm is not like the fluffy American pancakes we are used to; it is very dense and has a texture that is closer to a kueh’s.

Paulaner Bräuhaus At Millenia Walk Reopens As Asia’s New Model Flagship Store, Promenade Singapore – Apple Beignets (S$14.90++)

On the other hand, Paulaner Bräuhaus’s Fried Apple Beignets (S$14.90++) are a real hazard for those on diets! Reason? It is very good and got nods of approval all round! For those who are keen, these darlings are made with apple rings enclosed within a non-greasy wheat beer batter. And they are perfect with the accompanying vanilla sauce and ice cream!

Sunday Brunch

If you are into brunch, Paulaner Bräuhaus also serves a German Sunday Brunch Buffet (11.30am to 2.30pm) consisting of sausages, Bavarian meatloaf, pork knuckle, salads, chocolate fountain, warm apple strudel, ice cream and more. Sunday Brunch is priced at S$58++ with soft drinks, S$68++ with beers and soft drinks or S$78++ with wines, beers and soft drinks. Children below twelve will be charged at S$16++ and they can look forward to a myriad of activities during the brunch. For more information, refer to Paulaner Bräuhaus’s Facebook page.

NAHMJ Verdict

This is an awesome place for beer and meat lovers. I will come back with friends and family for their beers on tap, pork dishes and apple beignets!

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe previously was located at a corner of Middle Road has now shifted to Hotel Rendevzous Gallery. Personally, I prefer this location as it is more convenient for me. I have never dine at the cafe while it was at Middle Road, though I patronized their S-Cafe Express at Beach Road. The menu is still very much featuring German dishes with sausages, knuckle, schnitzel and various German drinks.

On The Table

Our main motive at the cafe was to savour its Black Forest Cake with a friend who was salivating when she spotted my Instagram post of this piece of fabulous Black Forest Cake.

Snack Paradise

The Snack Paradise allows you a choice of 3 starters from a list of 6 selections. We chose the Sausage Basket (Chicken and Pork), Garlic Bread and Meat Balls.

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe - Snack Paradise

The garlic flavour was not up to par. It needed more garlic to make it garlicky enough for our tastebuds. The meatballs came in a nice tomato sauce. On the menu it mentioned that it was salsa but I thought it tasted more like some tomato bean stew instead. There are 4 meatballs in the bowl.

Signature Black Forest Cake

Stuttgart Cafe serves the best Black Forest Cake in town. How could we missed it? No way.

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe - Signature Black Forest Cake

I am not going rave more about this Black Forest Cake since I have mentioned it in my S-Cafe Express post. In short, it is NAHMJ must have.

Engel Ace (Multi-vitamin) and Engel Braune Heidi (Apple) Drinks

Instead of having my usual coffee, I went for its sparkling fruit juice.

Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe - Engel Ace (Multi-vitamin) and Engel Braune Heidi (Apple) Drinks

My friend went for the Engel Mulitvitamin, a non-frizzy drink while I have the Engel Braune Heidi (right) a carbonated apple juice.

NAHMJ Verdict

After all, Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe is a typical German restaurant serving the typical German food. Without doubt I will go after the sausages and Black Forest Cake. The Meatballs is a good starter.

All of us know what is the world famous German Bratwurst is but what about Currywurst sold at Mr Berlin located at One Shenton Way.

Mr Berlin - Kiosk with seats

Currywurst is actually a German street snack of German Bratwurst usually cut to bite size with curry sauce added and curry powder dusted.

At Mr Berlin, the selection is limited. Though there are about three types of sausages, if you want Currywurst, the selection is either Pork or Chicken. There are three level of spiciness. To complete a meal, you can choose to have it with fries or a bread roll. For view  of the menu, click here.

Mr Berlin - My Lunch, Fries (White & Red) and Currywurst

I chose Pork sausage with the lowest level of spiciness (termed as Berlin Calling). I prefer fries to bread roll. The texture of the sausage is a coarse with small lumps of minced meat. It doesn’t taste like the sausages I am familiar with. The curry sauce is sweetish and the lowest spiciness level is not at all spicy for me. Mind you, I don’t take lots of spicy stuff either. The french fries is the shoe string fries. It is fried to a good level of crispiness and yet I can taste the potato of the fries.

Though I enjoyed my lunch, I find that the price is a little steep. Indulging once in a while is still pretty fine, I suppose.
