This is a long overdue post which I somehow I just forgotten about it or more accurately, I kept shelving it for other posts. Browns Brasserie & Bar In Covent Garden is one of the restaurant my cousin took me to when I was in London in one of the weekend in January. Knowing that I put up in Pullman London St Pancras, we ended up dining around Covent Garden. The other restaurant we dined was Henrietta Restaurant which is also within the vicinity.

Established in 1973, it has been around for more than 4 decades. Browns Brasserie & Bar existed throughout the UK with numerous outlets in London.

I was there for lunch on a snowing Sunday afternoon. Before entering the restaurant, I took a photo of the snowing situation just outside the restaurant.

Browns Brasserie & Bar, a casual restaurant, has a modern European theme.

Browns Restaurant In Covent Garden, A Restaurant To Experience Classic English Fare - Menu

On Sundays, beside the regular lunch menu, Sunday Roast is also available.

Browns Restaurant In Covent Garden, A Restaurant To Experience Classic English Fare - Sirloin Of Beef (£16.50)
Sirloin Of Beef (£16.50)

First, it got to be an item from the Sunday Roast Menu. We ordered the Sirloin Of Beef (£16.50) with the classic English Yorkshire Pudding. Accompanied with steamed vegetables. Brown sauce covered the surface of the beef. Enormous portion that it is good for two.

Browns Restaurant In Covent Garden, A Restaurant To Experience Classic English Fare - Browns Fish Pie (£15.25)
Browns Fish Pie (£15.25)

Next is the an item from the regular Ala Carte Menu. We opted for the Browns Fish Pie (£15.25). This is a traditional British fare. A portion so huge and rich till it could feed 4, I seriously think so. Made of though fish but cheese is present hence it was robust and could be too cloying for light palate.

Browns Restaurant In Covent Garden, A Restaurant To Experience Classic English Fare - Roasted Portobello Mushroom (£3.50)
Roasted Portobello Mushroom (£3.50)

Browns Restaurant In Covent Garden, A Restaurant To Experience Classic English Fare - Thick cut fries with Parmesan & Truffle oil (£4.50)
Thick cut fries with Parmesan & Truffle oil (£4.50)

We added the Roasted Portobello Mushroom (£3.50) and Thick cut fries with Parmesan & Truffle oil (£4.50) as sides. Both were great choices.

Browns Restaurant In Covent Garden, A Restaurant To Experience Classic English Fare - Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.50)
Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.50)

Ending the meal with the Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.50). I found it overly saccharine even though I like the texture of the pudding.

NAHMJ Verdict

For anyone who wants an experience of classic British cuisine, Browns Brasserie & Bar is a the restaurant.

During my visit to London over a weekend, I left the decision to my cousin on where to dine and he suggested Dishoom in King’s Cross for lunch on the day of my arrival since I stayed in Pullman London St Pancras

Most who visited London and have tried Indian food there would always sing praises of this cuisine in this metropolitan city. Here is one excellent choice for Indian cuisine in London.

Dishoom, Old Irani Cafes Of Bombay In The Heart Of London, At King's Cross - Restaurant area

Dishoom, Old Irani Cafes Of Bombay In The Heart Of London, At King's Cross - Bar Counter

Dishoom is an inspiration of the old Irani Cafe of Bombay serving food for breakfast as early as 8am daily. It span across 3 levels with a basement as bar and holding area at the King’s Cross outlet. Be prepared to wait if you don’t have a reservation on weekends. We were usher to this holding area as it was raining heavily when we arrived, making it impossible to wait outside the restaurant. Water were served while waiting.

I am not a fan of Chai as I have not tasted anything pleasant to my palate in Singapore hence I always shun away from this mixture. However, after a sip of Dishoom House Chai (£2.50), I fall in love for spice tea.

3 different sauces were served; chutney, mint and a spicy sauce were available for dip.

Dishoom, Old Irani Cafes Of Bombay In The Heart Of London, At King's Cross - Sauces

Chunky unappetizing looking Gunpowder Potatoes (£6.50) was surprisingly tasty. Flavourful due to the spice and herb added.

Dishoom Chicken Tikka (£7.90) is yet another tasty dish. Chicken meat were tender and succulent with perfect marinates.

Dishoom, Old Irani Cafes Of Bombay In The Heart Of London At King's Cross - Prawn Koliwada (£6.20)

Prawn Koliwada (£6.20) equally amazing.

Dishoom, Old Irani Cafes Of Bombay In The Heart Of London At King's Cross - Cheesy Naan (£3.50)

Dishoom, Old Irani Cafes Of Bombay In The Heart Of London At King's Cross - House Black Daal (£5.90)

Finally for some wholesome, we ordered the Cheesy Naan (£3.50) and House Black Daal (£5.90) as dip. I am not a fan of daal, however, I like theirs which is smooth, it wasn’t too chunky like most.

NAHMJ Verdict

Food served at Dishoom may not be the most authentic Indian food, personally, I would termed it as Londoner interpretation of the cuisine, is surprisingly delicious. Equally surprise to find the price to be reasonable as well.

During my trip to London in January 2018 for a weekend, the Saturday night was reserved for a musical play, Phathom of The Opera. I didn’t watch it when it came to Singapore. I was glad I finally did. And so, before the theatre, we went for our early dinner at Henrietta Restaurant in Henrietta Hotel along Henrietta Road in Covent Garden vinicity.

Since only Pre-Theatre Set meal was served, we turned to this only available option.

Henrietta Restaurant Along Henrietta Road, Pre-Theatre Set Dinner - Open Kitchen

Restaurant spans across two floors, ground and second with consistency contemporary interior design theme. And they offer an open kitchen at the ground floor for diners to admire he chefs at work.

For the Pre-Theatre Menu, patrons has the option to choose either the 2-course or 3-course meal. We selected the latter.

Starting with our 2 starters, the Chicken Liver Parfait with Paris Brown & roscoff onions and Vegetable Broth with spatzle & lettuce.

Henrietta Restaurant Along Henrietta Road - Vegetable Broth with spatzle & lettuce

We love the latter even though it was a plain simple vegetarian broth. In other words, Meatless, however, it was filled with sweetness of the produce. Chicken Liver Parfait was tasty too and the pairing with the sweet and sour onions was outstanding since the fruitiness cut through the intensed-flavour of liver.

Our Mains were the Butterfly quail with baby gem lettuce green, honey sour cream and Ricotta Dumpling, Chanterelles, Chestnuts and buttermilk. Both though equally good, there were hits and misses. The taste of the Quail was mainly briny. I would prefer it to taste on either more naturally or with other unique seasoning. While the latter dish, dumpling was too soft despite it was a flavourful dish.

For dessert, we chose the much raved about Freshly baked Madeleine, Chantilly Cream at supplement of £6. It was a shame that it didn’t live up to its name. It was too sweet for my liking. To fully enjoy this dessert, remember to slap the cream generously onto the Madeleine.

Henrietta Restaurant Along Henrietta Road, Pre-Theatre Set Dinner - Warm Buckwheat Waffle with Smoked Fudge Sauce and Sour Cream

I didn’t enjoy the Warm Buckwheat Waffle with Smoked Fudge Sauce and Sour Cream either. Though the smokey sauce was unique on a waffle, the Waffle was a little rough due to buckwheat being used.

NAHMJ Verdict

Overall, I enjoyed the dishes on the Pre-Theatre Set Menu Henrietta Restaurant.

We were shopping at Harrods and we came across Morelli Ice Cream Palour. As an ice cream lover, I couldn’t resist the charm of Morelli. It was after our afternoon tea at The Capital and I was still full. I couldn’t resist the charm of ice cream and I still decided to go ahead and have a scoop of Morelli ice cream. My cousin followed suit while my aunt passed it.

Morelli Ice Cream Parlour

Morelli has both dine in and takeaway options. For the takeaway, it is meant to be a takeaway as no eating is allowed within Harrods, other than within Morelli.

Morelli Ice Cream Parlour - Ice Cream

There were a good selections in Morelli. Anyway, I settled for the chocolate anyway. Personally, I find that Morelli chocolate ice cream is not chocolaty and not creamy enough. Anyway, I still enjoy the ice cream as it is ice cream. Lol

When I was planning for my London trip last year, I was thinking to myself, how can I not have afternoon tea when I am in London.

My first choice was to spend an afternoon with my aunt (and may be my cousin, if he is coming along), at The Savoy. It was ashamed that the date and time that I wanted was fully booked. I could only be on the waiting list. So, I settled for my second choice that is at The Capital. As always, I will make my reservation for the afternoon Tea at The Capital prior the trip.

We were a little late for the afternoon tea and at the same time, I was a little worried that they may not have seats for three as I made reservation for two. Luckily, they did have an additional seat for my cousin.

The service crew were diplomatic and helpful, nevertheless, we waited quite a while for the waiter to show us to the table. The afternoon tea was in a lovely room, which has only five tables, each for a maximum of four guests. The theme of the room was very English. I am always very concern with the chair. It was very cozy and comfortable. I did not get backache or get restless at the end of the 2 hours.

We ordered three sets of the same. There were sandwiches, pastries, scones. Scones were served with jams and clotted cream. There were wide selection of tea. I am a Earl Grey Tea lover, so I need not to go through the long tea menu before I decide what to have. My aunt and cousin took some time to decide though.

High Tea Set

In general, the food were decent and the ambience was good. I would certainly want to try other afternoon tea for comparison purpose.
