Treasure Kiosk recently opened its own permanent store in Chinatown Point. They had previously experienced great success with their pop-up outlets during various food fairs like Food Fiesta and River Hongbao and were encouraged but also humbled. As such, they have opted not to be overly ambitious and the new store is, as its name indicates, just a cozy stall that serves much coveted street food fare. The store has no space available to accommodate diners; food must be taken to go.

Treasure Kiosk’s menu revolves around chilli crab. However, the crustacean of choice is deep fried soft-shell crab rather than the conventionally carapaced ones. This is both for ease of eating to suit the store’s street food format and because they believe it can absorb the chilli crab sauce better.

One distinguishing feature of Treasure Kiosk’s delectable chilli crab sauce is that while the sauce traditionally contains peanuts which have been grinded into powder, Treasure Kiosk have chosen to leave them as sizeable bits within their sauce, giving it an extra crunch.

In the case of the Treasure Burger, the sauce is slathered over a whole soft-shell crab between 2 lightly toasted buns.

Treasure Kiosk insists on keeping the spaghetti in their Treasure Bowl al dente, so as to give it a firmer bite. Chunks of steamed crab meat are added alongside the ubiquitous soft-shell crab.

But in my opinion, nothing beats the classic. While the bread served in their Treasure Cup (or Treasure Bucket, if you fancy a bigger serving) is a baguette rather than fried mantou, it still tastes most satisfying after being dipped in the chilli crab sauce. Getting to eat the crab on its own with the sauce also still feels the purest way to enjoy this Singaporean favourite.

All dishes except the pasta come with some potato wedges, which can also be dipped in the sauce. I don’t think it adds much to the experience. But the wedges taste alright and ultimately gives more bang for your buck.

1-For-1 Promotion

From 25 July to 15 August 2019, Treasure’s Kiosk is offering a 1-for-1 promotion on its Treasure Bucket, Treasure Cup, Treasure Bowl and Treasure Burger items.

NAHMJ Verdict

You can’t go wrong with chilli crab sauce, and it goes beautifully with the soft-shell crab. At prices ranging from $8 to $18, the 1-for-1 promotion is very good value indeed and definitely worth a try.

This is my second visit to Porta @ Park Hotel Clarke Quay. Porta x Ah Hua Kelong introduce a 2-day only exclusive menu to showcase the best of locally sourced/farmed seafood from the shores of Singapore. A total of 6-course is offered. This will be held on 15& 16 August in conjunction with SG’s 53rd birthday celebration.

Porta x Ah Hua Kelong

Lokan with Thai Basil, Green Chili and Lime

The lokans are very fresh and juicy, I was told that they are farmed using quality live baits instead of commercial shortcuts with likes of growth hormones and chemicals. The Thai Basil, Green Chili and Lime added another dimension to the dish.

Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Introducing 6-Course Marine Treasures Menu - Lokan with Thai Basil, Green Chili and Lime

Pearl Grouper with Baby Spinach and Shimeji – Konbu

As you may know, Pearl Grouper is one of the most difficult fishes to farm. Any wrong technique used will spoil the taste and texture of the pearl grouper. Kelong use fresh and live fishes to feed pearl grouper, so they grow up to have soft and oily meat. There was a crispy coat surrounding the piece of peal grouper and giving texture to each bite. The baby spinach and Shimeji Konbu balance the taste and make it remarkable.

Local Green Lip Mussel with Red Curry, Coconut and Lime

This is my favorite dish, the Green Lip Mussels are so fresh, the sauce mixed with red curry, coconut and Lime gives the right level of spiciness. Simply dip the fried pillowy mantou bun into the sauce, it reminds me of the iconic Singapore dish – Chili Crab.

Sea Bass with  Aubergine, Okra Belacan and Chili

Pan-frying is a simple but delicious way to cook Sea Bass, it crisps up the skin and adds flavors and texture to the finished dish. The Aubergine and Okra Belacan together with the red chili make this dish great.

Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Introducing 6-Course Marine Treasures Menu - Sea Bass with  Aubergine, Okra Belacan and Chili

Raspberries ice cream with Chocolate Salted Caramel cake

This dessert combines sweet and salty flavors, it tantalise the taste buds of chocolate lovers. The salt sets off the caramel and dark chocolate and brings out the rich flavors. The two pieces of deep-fried fins not only bring you the crispy texture but also make the dessert so pretty to look at.

Promotion

Date: 15 & 16 August, Wednesday & Thursday

Time (2-seatings): 6.30pm – 8.30pm / 8.30pm – 10.30pm

Price: $72++ per adult / $36++ per child 5 to 11 years (smaller portions)

NAHMJ Verdict

Porta’s Executive Chef Alex Phan has modern European culinary techniques, he uses an exotic range of local herbs and spices to infuse into his dishes to present an elevated dimension of flavours and textures. Porta x Ah Hua collaboration menu is worth turning to.

Who doesn’t love buffet? Either for the quantity or variety. I belong to the latter who loves the assorted spread. We recently have a wonderful Penang Buffet Dinner at Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel. Coincindently, within the same week, we visited Tien Court at level 2 of Copthorne Kings as well as they are holding a 53% discount promotion for Dim Sum. The last Asian buffet that we had before this was at The Straits Cafe @ Rendezvous Hotel

This is my first visit to Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel. Before the visit, I heard lots of positive reviews about them. Especially on the signature dishes.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Dinning Area

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Nonya Kueh Spread

The entire restaurant has the 80s vibes. The good news is that the furniture looks well-maintained with no sign of wear and tear.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace

As this is a Penang Buffet, the spread focused on Penang dishes and offered only Asian food which is steered mainly to the local dishes. No international option is offered on the buffet table at the Penang Buffet Dinner at Princess Terrace.

Signature Dishes

When at the Penang Buffet Dinner at Princess Terrace, first and foremost, go for the Penang Fried Kway Teow. A pity, they aren’t having this dish as live station. Hence, if this dish sat at the buffet table for too long and turned cold, it will not be as tasty.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Penang Fried Kway Teow

The next 3 dishes are prepared at the Live station, First is the Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee with robust prawn stock.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Pennang Hokkien Mee

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Penang Laksa

Next is the Penang Laksa, we could smell and taste the fish flavour however, most of the diners for the night find it too weak. We think that this flavour is created to cater to the masses.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Kueh Pie Tee

Followed by the Kueh Pie Tee. Popiah is also available though we gave it a miss.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Nonya Kueh

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Apom Bokwa

Coming to desserts, medley of Nonya Kueh are part of the spread at the Penang Buffet at Princess Terrace too.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Tou Hua

Interestingly, they offered silky Tau Hua too.

More Spread

In addition to the Signature dishes, which are certainly the must eat. But since it is a buffet dinner, we are expecting more food. Let’s beginning to examine the spread at the Penang Buffet Dinner at Princess Terrace.

Soups

2 Soups were offered as part of the buffet Spread. First is the peppery Pig Stomach Soup, the other is the appetitising Preserved Vegetable Duck Soup.

v

Rojak commonly found in many Asian Buffet is also available at this Penang Buffet Dinner.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Rojak

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Stuffed Beancurd

Authentically Beancurd with Stuffing was also at the table. We enjoyed the rendition created by Princess Terrace.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Seafood

nang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Starters

At all buffet, Seafood on Ice is always part of the mix with Prawn, Mussel and Crayfish.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Curry Chicken

To add on, Curry Chicken is also offered.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Stingray

Yet another item that diners would love is the BBQ Stingray with chilli .

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Meatballs

Handful of hot dishes were part of the buffet, such as Meatballs.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Vegetables

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Stirred Fried Seafood

Various Stirred fried vegetables and seafood dishes were offered too.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Fried Porridge

Something rarely seen on the buffet table is the Fried Porridge

More Desserts

Beside the Nonya Kueh, expect more variety of desserts at the Penang Buffet Dinner at Princess Terrace.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Bo Bo Cha Cha

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Ice Kacang

Such as the Bobo Chacha and Ice Kacang.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Pancake

More crowd favourite, the crispy Peanut Pancake.

Penang Buffet Dinner At Princess Terrace @ Copthorne Kings Hotel - Fruits

Lastly, 3 fruits, Watermelon, Honeydew and Pineapple.

NAHMJ Verdict

With such a delicious spread at Penang Buffet Dinner at Princess Terrace, whenever I am craving for Penang Food, but I don’t want to travel all to satisfy my craving, this has to be the place to turn to.

Since the buzz here is the Dim Sum Promotion lunch. Let’s start with this mouthwatering items. I shall introduce the highlights and the items that we love most.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Steamed Crystal Dumpling with Scallops and Vegetable 翡翠带子饺 ($6.50)

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Steamed Pork & Prawn Dimpling with Caviar 鱼子蒸烧卖 ($6.30)

First the more traditional Dim, there are Steamed Pork & Prawn Dimpling with Caviar 鱼子蒸烧卖 ($6.30) and equally delicious Steamed Crystal Dumpling with Scallops and Vegetable 翡翠带子饺 ($6.50).

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Fried Carrot Cake with Dried Scallop 干贝萝卜糕 ($5.80)

One of the best Fried Carrot Cake with Dried Scallop 干贝萝卜糕 ($5.80) I ever has, has to be at Tien Court. Simply perfect.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Steamed Prawns Dumpling with Black Truffle 黑松露虾饺 ($8.30)

For the truffle fans, turned to Steamed Prawns Dumpling with Black Truffle 黑松露虾饺 ($8.30).

With 53% discount even though it is offered only on weekdays (Mondays to Fridays), I find it irresistible. Claim the offer now via Advocado.

Ala Carte

At Tien Court, beside the delectable Dim Sum, there are numerous signature dishes that are worth the calories.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Lobster Broth with Mini Pumpkin 金瓜盅龙虾汤($28)

Beginning with the beautifully plated Lobster Broth with Mini Pumpkin 金瓜盅龙虾汤 ($28), these are flavourful and there are thick slices of lightly chewy lobster meat to complement the soup.

Baked Fresh Scallops served with Cheese Mayonnaise and Teriyaki Brinjal 蒜香焗带子 ($36) is yet another gorgeous dish. Each scallop sat on a roll of eggplant crowned with cheese mayonnaise, best eaten within a mouth for all the flavours to mingle together.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Baked Fresh Scallops served with Cheese Mayonnaise and Teriyaki Brinjal 蒜香焗带子 ($36)

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Braised Sea Perch Fish with Black Truffle and Mushroom 黑松露鲜菌焖鲈鱼件 ($32 per piece)

Next item is the Braised Sea Perch Fish with Black Truffle and Mushroom 黑松露鲜菌焖鲈鱼件 ($32 per piece) which I love. The lightly black truffle was absorbed by the mushroom, therefore remember to eat the perch that was with an extremely thin batter to savour the most of the truffle aroma.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Plum Paste 冰梅温沙骨 ($10 per pax)

Firm meaty Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Plum Paste 冰梅温沙骨 ($10 per pax) was tasty though  some commented that it was too salty. I feel that it might be due to the inconsistent amount coated on the rib. In any case, I didn’t mind the level of saltiness. However, I prefer the meat to be more tender.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Braised Rice with Diced Chicken with Bonito Flakes Served in Stone Pot 石锅木鱼花鸡丁烩饭 ($22)

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Scoop of Braised Rice with Diced Chicken with Bonito Flakes Served in Stone Pot

Braised Rice with Diced Chicken with Bonito Flakes Served in Stone Pot 石锅木鱼花鸡丁烩饭 ($22) was surprisingly tasty. The bonito flakes enhances the flavour though some might dislike the fishy aroma.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Roasted Peking Duck Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Slicing the Peking Duck

Lastly is the dish that stole the limelight, the Roasted Peking Duck.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Wraps of Peking Duck

The crispy duck skin together with the special dark sweet sauce wrapped in thin egg crepe is tasty and addictive. I can’t stop at one. Even two is not enough. I wish I could have all the pieces.

Tien Court Offering 53% Discount For Dim Sum At Copthorne Kings - Cream of Coconut with Peach Resin 椰皇雪燕桃树胶 ($9)

Ending the meal with Cream of Coconut with Peach Resin 椰皇雪燕桃树胶 ($9). The coconut jelly was fragrance with perfect sweetness. A pity the peach resin was bland.

NAHMJ Verdict

With such a rare promotion for Dim Sum lunch, no doubt that all foodie will agree that we certainly have to grab the opportunity to dine at Tien Court this August. Claim your offer at this link now https://advo.io/9PluAi.

We have shared various Saucy collaboration previously such as with Caffe B, Jimoto-ya and this round Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore. In case, you do not know who Saucy is, in short, they are a start-up who work with big brands to create mind-blowing innovative dishes. As for The Coffee Academics, a cafe hailed from Hong Kong, with its first outlet at Scotts Square and followed with the second at Raffles City.

This round, they have once again surprised us with some unexpected combination of humble ingredient on a popular brekkie item.

Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore Whipping Umami Up Brunch Set - Umami Up Brunch Set ($30)
Umami Up Brunch Set ($30)

Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore

In this edition, Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore offers the Umami Up Brunch Set ($30). Consisting of a Egg Benedicts and Iced Yuan Yang. Both the items has a surprising twist.

Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore Whipping Umami Up Brunch Set - Egg Benedicts
Egg Benedicts

Instead of crowning the poach egg with Hollandaise Sauce, one is with Century Egg Lava Sauce and the other is with Salted Egg Lava Sauce.

Personally, I really love it with Century Egg Lava. Coupling the creamy acquired taste sauce with seafood was a surprise. I never thought this is a killer combination. With the seasoning on top, augmented the flavour further.

With Century Egg Lava Sauce

Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore Whipping Umami Up Brunch Set - With Salted Egg Lava Sauce
With Salted Egg Lava Sauce

While the one with Salted Egg Lava Sauce and crab meat is pale in comparison. The salted egg flavour was masked by brininess. Maybe the sauce was lacking in curry leaves and an added chilli spice would do the trick.

Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore Whipping Umami Up Brunch Set - Iced Yuan Yang
Iced Yuan Yang

The Egg Benedicts is paired with a Iced Yuan Yang with a twist. This classic Hong Kong Cha Chaang Teng beverage is the marriage of the TCA House Blend and Tea Academics Blend. The result was a smooth, velvety with complex flavours of nutty, chocolate, floral and fruity.

Promotion

Umami Up Brunch Set ($30) is an exclusive dish specially created through Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore available till 31 July 2018. Diners could enjoy the brunch set at The Coffee Academics Raffles City outlet daily and The Coffee Academics Scotts Square from Monday to Friday and after 6pm on weekends.

Simply reserve the Umami Up Brunch by purchasing a $3 ticket on Saucy and pay the remaining balance at the restaurant.

NAHMJ Verdict

I would certainly encourage diners, especially those who are sick of Egg Benedicts, to try out the Umami Up Brunch whipped by Saucy x The Coffee Academics Singapore. You may gain your liking for this classic Brunch dish again. Or be inspired to create your unique sauce to spice up this boring dish.

We previously visited the Crystal Jade Kitchen at Centrepoint for the wok-fried dishes cum Dim Sum and we love it. Mouthwatering Roasted Honey BBQ Pork Collar 烧烤猪劲肉 ($16.80 per serving). The layer of honey bbq sauce coated tightly on the meat and was robust. I can have the entire serving to myself with rice.

Together with Crystal Jade Palace and Crystal Jade Dining, 2 new items are on promotion. First is the pretty pastel coloured Tiffany Custard Bun 锦绣流沙包 ($8 for 3) with a brush of gold to the added lavishness. Taste-wise, I think it is certainly the best of the best as the salted egg flavour is substantial and I like it for the lack of sweetness. The second new item is the Roast Pork Collar with Mirin Sauce 味松醂板肉 ($18.80 per portion).

Okinawa Prefecture and Gurunavi launches Okinawa Menu Fair 2018 in Singapore with 5 participating restaurants. These specially created menu is available till 28 March 2018. We have the opportunity to taste the wonderful ingredients from this Japan Prefecture made into highly palate dishes at Ristorante Luka.

In case, you are wondering who are the other 4 restaurants that offer the Okinawa Menu; they are PIXY Bar & Cuisine, O-Ku Japanese Tapas Bar, Kabuke and Kinsa Sushi

Okinawa Menu Fair

The Okinawa Menu introduced by the Italian restaurant, Ristorante LUKA, comprised 3 dishes. It fills me with great anticipation to find out how Okinawa-flavored food can combine with Italian house cooking style.

Prosciutto Cotto Di Agu

First dish of the Okinawa Menu uses the Aguu pork, a native pig of Okinawa which contains lesser fat and cholesterol (for those concerned with their health). The higher level of Glutamic acid in the pork gives a richer flavor although I cannot really ‘taste’ it. (I mean what is Glutamic acid supposed to taste like??)

The pork is made into dry-cured ham in-house, a typical Italian culinary. It is then served in thin slices, drizzled with oil, a dash of black pepper and topped with some vegetables (rocket leaves, capsicum, leek, carrot and zucchini if my memory serves me right) among other seasonings.

Okinawa Menu Fair @ Ristorante LUKA - Aperitivo, Prosciutto Cotto Di Agu

First look at the dish – raw and heavy (with fats and oil). First taste for the dish – perfecto! The pork has a very clean and refreshing taste with absolutely no porky smell. Very unlike most prosciutto which are on the salty side. Each vegetable with its own distinct taste complements the meat very well. It enhances the overall taste, making this a very appetizing Aperitivo. It is surprisingly light even with the fats and the layer of oil. I am blown away by this dish.

Spaghetti Alla Chitarra Con Bottarga E Hotaru Iku

The Okinawa flavor in this dish lies in the pesto trapanese sauce (made with Okinawa Leaf Garlic) used to toss the house-made spaghetti. Unlike garlic cloves, the leaves has a mellower taste and leaves a fragrant aftertaste. However, it’s a pity that the thick slices of garlic cloves that went into the dish over-powered this subtle taste.

Okinawa Menu Fair @ Ristorante LUKA - Pasta - Spaghetti Alla Chitarra Con Bottarga E Hotaru Ika

The Hotaru Ika (loosely translated from Japanese as firefly squids) appears in the spring and summer seasons crowned the pasta. They have a soft texture that makes it easy to bite into. The pre-fried only helps to tone down the fishy-taste.

The portion was just nice for me (as the oil used in the dish is slightly heavier) and allowed some space in my stomach for the second main course. Overall, it is not as good as the first one. Perhaps the appetizer is so good that it has unwittingly set the bar higher for the subsequent dishes.

Fritto Di Pesce Gurukun

Gurukun is a type of white-fleshed fish, a double-lined fusilier. Simply said, it is a relative of the snapper fish. Placing the deep-fried fish on top of a toss of clams, tomatoes, sliced asparagus, lemon and Fregola (pasta beads). Sprinkled chopped basil leaves for finishing.

Okinawa Menu Fair @ Ristorante LUKA - Secondo, Fritto Di Pesce Gurukun

The flesh has pure sweetness. It was imported from Okinawa two days ago to make this dish. It reminds me of the fishes I have had in Hokkaido and Scotland where the catches are few days old. I always thought it’s a ‘waste’ to fry fresh catches, but this is too good that I will not want it any other way. The fried layer is thin and crispy. It savour hints of cereal but I am not certain if this ingredient was weaved into the batter. Thumbs up for the fish.

As for the toss base, I find it pretty heavy. On close scrutiny, I saw a thick layer of oil that appeared at the top of the sauce. I tried to scrap it away but to no avail. I am a clam-lover but after 3 or 4 clams, I had to stop. Perhaps a little less oil will make this dish another winner like the appetizer.

NAHMJ Verdict

Overall, the Okinawa menu is worth a try for anyone keen to have a taste of Okinawa. The Aguu pork may not be as famous as Japan’s Kurobuta pork but the culinary skills of the chef at LUKA has definitely made it a memorable dish. And if one is not overly sensitive to fishy-taste, the spaghetti is still a decent dish. If not, one can skip it and go direct to the second main – deep fried Gurukun fish. Hopefully, the chef will go easy on the oil in the second main so that one can enjoy the clams and pasta beads!

The last buffet we had at Makan @ Jen At Hotel Jen Orchardgateway was the ‘Ultimate Prawn Party’. After 9 months, Makan @ Jen is introducing the East Meets West Buffet. We were excited as we love such borderless curated dishes. In addition, if you are dinning in 4, read to find out the promotion in-store for you.

For those who has not been to Makan @ Jen, it is perched at level 10 of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway. As such, once you arrived at the restaurant, you will feel as if you were transported to a getaway spot instantaneously. This is because, the serenity vibe is echoing in the air.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Fresh Seafood

East Meets West Buffet At Making @ Jen

Tantalise your tastebud with the best of the Eastern and Western Cuisine at this East Meets West Buffet at Makan @ Jen which Hotel Jen Orchardgateway has specially planned. Some of the highlights are below.

Highlights At The East Meets West Buffet.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Char Hokkien Mee Pasta

First and foremost is an adaptation from the popular black Hokkien Mee, instead of using the yellow noodle, pasta is used in this Char Hokkien Mee Pasta. It is very well received though some find the noodles too al dente.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Fusion Pizza

Another crowd favourite was the Fusion Pizza. 2 daily flavours were on the buffet each day. On the day of our visit, Korean Pork Bulgogi with Kimchi, Feta Cheese3 Pizza and Tom Yam Flavoured Seafood Pizza were available. We love the former due to the rich and flavourful ingredients on the pizza. However, we can’t say the same for the pizza dough.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - PieTeePaella

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Paella for the PieTeePaella

Something out of the extraordinary, least unexpected combination was in the Pie Tee Paella. Replacing the turnip with paella rice with the rest of the ingredients remains the same is the twist to this local dish. The result is bold and revolutionary.

More Borderless Creations Offered At The Buffet Spread

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Fish & Chips using Fried Dough Fritters closed-up

Most must have fond memory of the seafood paste stuff in you tiao from our favourite local Cze Char stall. Here we have Fish & Chips using Fried Dough Fritters; truly east meets west here. An entire new experience of having Fish & Chips.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Asian Lobster in BBQ Sauce

Seafood is always a captivating choice among Singaporea, hence not to be missed is the crowd-pleaser, Asian Lobster in BBQ Sauce, essentially, these are crayfish. Me too love them, could easily have a dozen pieces of them.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Chilli Crab Quesadilla

Chilli Crab Quesadilla is an item with mixed review; love it due to the strong complex flavour. And it is with the same reason for those who dislike it. In spite of the overall voting result, one fact we can’t deny is the love for the ingredient, chilli crab.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Thai Fried Chicken

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Thai Chicken chop

Lastly are two Thai Chicken dishes. First is the Thai Fried Chicken stuffed with Creamed Potatoes and Parma Ham and followed by the Thai Chicken chop. The chicken in both the dishes were succulent.

Desserts

Finally, we reached a time for dessert. We counted about 8 cakes and tarts and 8 flavours of ice cream cum assortment of Nonya Kueh as a spread.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Nonya Kueh

Some of the diners favourite are the Mango Mousse Cake which hardly could go wrong.

East Meets West Buffet At Makan @ Jen Of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway - Red Bean Mochi

If you prefer, go for the Red Bean Mochi.

Promotion

The East Meets West Buffet at Makan @ Jen is available from now till 30 Nov 2017 on every Sunday to Thursday, from 6.30pm to 10pm, at $42++ per person.

NAHMJ Verdict

East Meets West Buffet serves a number of innovative dishes by combining some of the unusual east and west ingredients together which we thought it was a good try. At this buffet, we find that the standard is getting better. However, a number of food we tried was not pipping hot which most would prefer.

For the second year running, Peony Jade @ Keppel Club; is awarded a spot on the Bib Gourmand list in MICHELIN guide Singapore. But did you know that Peony Jade actually has its roots stemming from Clarke Quay since 2004? Today, Peony Jade @ Clarke Quay continues to wow us with delightful Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine, including the newly launched “Red HOT Chilli Crabbers Set Lunch”!

Red HOT Chilli Crabbers 6 Course Set Lunch

I like Crabs but they are pricey, especially if I am having them at one of the restaurants along touristy Singapore River. But with the launch of Peony Jade’s attractively priced 6 Course “Red HOT Chilli Crabbers Set Lunch”, I can now indulge without spending a bomb.

Set Lunch Menu

1st  Course: Dim Sum Trilogy

Looking like a piece of art, the Dim Sum Trilogy is a platter of three exquisitely handcrafted dim sum. Each diner will be treated to a pan-seared prawn in filo wrap, poached dumpling in hot & sour broth and steamed pork ‘siu mai’ with tobiko.

My personal favorite on this platter is the pan seared prawn in filo wrap. With every bite, I savored a delicious mouthful of crispy pastry and juicy prawn accompanied by a slightly sweet and tangy mango sauce, which serves to reduce the oiliness. Although the prawn used is not as meaty as I like (it is more crunchy), I still enjoyed it.

The steamed pork ‘siu mai’ with tobiko was done reasonably well with juicy and perfectly seasoned fillings.

Poached dumpling in hot & sour broth is my least favorite because the dumpling skin (at the folds) was too thick. The hot and sour broth was also not as spicy as I expected.

2nd Course: Wok Fried Crabs

Although this is a Red HOT Chilli Crabbers set lunch, we are not limited to have only chilli crabs; instead we can choose between Singapore’s Favorite Wok-Fried Chilli Crab, Singapore’s Famous Black Pepper Crab or the unique Wok-Fried Crab with White Pepper.

During the media lunch, we tried all three flavors. Unanimously, we all voted for the Chilli Crab as our favorite. There are many variations of Chilli Crab; some are sweet, some are spicy, some are salty and others are in between. Peony Jade’s chilli crab is one of the rare ones that are firmly on the spicy side with a delicate level of sweetness and marginal saltiness. In other words, it has my perfect chilli crab sauce. The only pity is that fried mantous are not included in the set.

For those who like experimenting with new flavors, White Pepper Crab is also worth a try. Against my expectation, the White Pepper Crab is not served dry but in a creamy carbonara type of sauce. I am not usually a fan of cream sauce but this one won me over. The addition of spicy white pepper in the cream sauce is a stroke of genius that minimized the jelat-ness, making this one of the few cream sauces that I enjoy. This delicate sauce also allows the sweetness of the crab meat to shine through the most.

Lastly, the Black Pepper Crab. Most of my fellow diners rated this as their least favorite. Some found this to be too spicy while others commented that it is a tad salty compared to the other two crabs. Since I like spicy stuff, I think that this is still pretty good. It is just not as satisfying as the Chilli Crab and White Pepper Crab. But, if you are a black pepper fan, there is no reason why you should skip this!

Each portion of crab shown above is about 800g to 1kg and is for two to share.

3rd Course: Sauteed Beef with Hong Kong Kale

After the yummy crabs, it is time for some meat – Sauteed Beef with Hong Kong Kale. I really adore the tender beef slices but did not like the Hong Kong Kale as they take on a bitter after-taste. According to my fellow diners, the bitterness is an innate characteristic of Hong Kong Kale so you either love it or hate it (like bitter gourd).

4th Course: Szechuan Spicy “Dan Dan” Noodles

Peony Jade Introduces Red HOT Chilli Crabbers Set Lunch, Clarke Quay Singapore - Szechuan Spicy Dan Dan Noodles

“Dan Dan” Noodles was the most anticipated dish for me. But alas, it did not meet my spicy benchmark; while I concede that there is a slight lingering ma la (numbing) effect, overall, the noodles was more sweet than spicy. However, this should be good news for diners who dislike cannot take spicy food.

5th Course: Chilled Fresh Mango Puree with Sacs and Sago Pearls

Peony Jade @ Clarke Quay Introduces Attractively Priced Red HOT Chilli Crabbers Set Lunch For Two, Clarke Quay Singapore - Chilled Mango Puree with Sacs and Sago

As a sweet ending to the meal, Peony Jade prepared a Chilled Fresh Mango Puree with Sacs and Sago Pearls (Mango Sago and Pomelo) dessert. Served really cold, Peony Jade’s version of this popular Hong Kong dessert is suitably sweet and has a thick consistency. I love this so much that I finished it in seconds!

6th Course: Singapore Sling

Peony Jade Introduces Red HOT Chilli Crabbers Set Lunch, Clarke Quay Singapore - Singapore Sling

Lastly, we concluded our meal with an iconic Singapore cocktail, the Singapore Sling. Based on my lone encounter with the Singapore Sling on board one of the SQ flights, I think this is way better. It was not too sweet and did not have any unpleasant “cough syrup” taste.

If you are not a fan of cocktails, Peony Jade allows you to replace the cocktail with a beer, Red/White wine or any non-alcoholic drinks on their menu. I really give them thumbs up for this flexibility!

Price and Promotion

The Red HOT Chilli Crabbers 6 Course Set Lunch is a ongoing lunch promotion.
Price: $138.80++ for two persons, S$79.90++ for additional person (Minimum 2 persons to dine)

NAHMJ Verdict

If you are a fan of spicy crabs, look no further but Peony Jade @ Clarke Quay! Considering the impeccable service, classy ambiance and superb central location, the price is a steal. Being affordable yet impressive, this will also make a wonderful choice if you are out to impress foreign clients or friends. NAHMJ highly recommends.

We heard very positive Tin Hill Social reviews before we dined at the restaurant located within the Horse City, near The Grandstand. As such I admit that the bar was set high for them. In summary, they didn’t disappoint. Gorgeous Space with delicious food, that is near perfection, what else could I ask for. And we, at NAHMJ, urge you to read on to find out an insane promotion by Advocado app, we assure you that you will not regret to know about it. And if you approve of it, don’t forget to share with your friends.

Tin Hill Social consisting of a kitchen and a bar, is hidden amidst the greenery, secluded; hence the title hidden gem is well-deserved. Upon entering, the beautiful Al Fresco dining area caught our attention instantaneously. It was so gorgeous till it fits for a wedding.

Indoor is rather dim; comparing with the outdoor, it isn’t as alluring but certainly cosy.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Indoor Seating Area

We tried a total of 3 appetisers from the menu at Tin Hill Social Kitchen. Starting with Fried Chicken Wings, Sriacha, Corriander ($14) varied in saltiness. Some felt salty, while some felt bland, though I thought it was perfect. I suppose it has to do with the marination and the amount of salt scattered on the wings.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Fried Kelong Prawns, Somac, Yoghurt, Mint ($14)

Followed by the Fried Kelong Prawns, Somac, Yoghurt, Mint ($14). For those who doesn’t like to eat the shell of the prawns may hesitate, but no worry, it was so crispy equivalent to a better. In fact, better since it doesn’t absorb as much oil. To enjoy the maximize flavour, do eat it with the somac, yohurt and mint. Otherwise, it will be in its natural goodness.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Aberdeen Angus Sirloin Steak Tartare, Italian Black Truffle, Grana Padano, Crostini's ($14)

One man’s meat is another man’s poison, absolutely true for the dish, Aberdeen Angus Sirloin Steak Tartare, Italian Black Truffle, Grana Padano, Crostini’s ($14). Due to raw beef in the dish, not many could appreciate. For those who do, fully relish on this item.

Moving on to Mains, a total of 6 dishes. Beginning with the amazing Roast Sweet Potato, Goat’s Cheese, Kale, Thyme Infused Honey, Quinao, Black Garlic Puree, Hazelnut ($24.50). This plate full of superfood was tasty. The combination of the various natural ingredients not only complemented each other but most importantly, they elevated each other to bring out the best of others. However due to the presence of Goat’s Cheese, not all love it.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Tin Hill Seafood Stew ($32)

Tin Hill Seafood Stew ($32) is a must when dining at Tin Hill Social, especially if you love Seafood and Tomato. Even for non-tomato lover like myself couldn’t resist the charm of this dish. The seafood flavour in the stew was manifested among the tomato puree.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Campania Pizza

Here comes the crowd favourite, Campania Pizza topped with Mozzarellla, Burratina, lightly dehydrated Heirloom Tomato and Fresh Basil. The pizza dough was thin but yet with a light bread-like texture. It was worthy of every calorie.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Whisky Dry Aged Australian Grain Fed Wagyu Rump ($110)

If your are dining in a large group, we would highly recommend the Whisky Dry Aged Australian Grain Fed Wagyu Rump ($110). The smoky with hard liquor hint in the beef slices were a hit with all beef lovers. We thought it was at an attractive price-point.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Slow Braised Beef Short Rib Pie ($28.50)

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Slow Braised Beef Short Rib Meat found in the Pie

There are 2 other highly recommended beef dishes at Tin Hill Social. First and foremost is the Slow Braised Beef Short Rib Pie ($28.50). Beneath the butter crusty pastry was melt-in-the-mouth short rib beef infused with bold and intense flavours. Such texture was achieved due to hours of slow braised.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Tin Hill Rangers Valley Black Angus Brisket Burger ($28.50)

As an alternative beef item, opt for the signature dish of Tin Hill Social, the Tin Hill Rangers Valley Black Angus Brisket Burger ($28.50). Instead of presenting the burger with beef patty which was the norm, thick slices of tender brisket sandwich between pillowy-soft sesame fun was used instead. Pairing it with other then fries but with addictive sweet potato fries.

Finally, ending the meal with 2 desserts, a sweet and a sour. A choice, very much depending on individual preference. Starting with the Valrhona Moelleux, Textures of Raspberry, Chocolate Soil which no chocolate lovers would resist. The raspberry was a good add to reduce the cloying feel that one would usual associate with chocolate.

Next was my favourite Lemon & Passionfruit Delicious, Passion Curd, Chantilly, Lemongrass Sorbet, Weaver Ants ($15). Did you notice something unusual in the description of the dessert? Yes! ANTS! Ants was a choice to showcase a different view of local ingredients used. Tin Hill Social would love diners to think of them as spicy citrus caviar. Will it be a “Yay” or “Nay” for you?

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Strawberry Hill Mocktail

An exceptional choice is the Strawberry Hill Mocktail. We love it as it was lightly sweetened with bites of fruits. Its appearance was attractive and appetising too.

Tin Hill Social, Gorgeous Space With Delicious Food Near Perfection - Butterfly Pea G&T, Bitters ($16)

Should diners be looking for alcoholic drinks, a handful of recommendation such as the equally pretty Butterfly Pea G&T, Bitters ($16). For the spice lover, why not experience spiciness amidst refreshing in the Wiwat’s Next of Kin ($16). Or else pair your food with Saint Clair Vicar’s Choice Sauvignon Blanc 2016 ($12 Glass / $55 Bottle) or Saint Clair Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015 ($12 Glass / $55 Bottle).
