I am a big fan of Peranakan food, however, I always find that this local cuisine is under-appreciated by many. It was heart-warming to know that Godmama, a new Peranakan Restaurant perched at level 4 of Funan is trying to bring this cuisine to the millennial by introducing Peranakan flavours in familiar Brunch items on weekends.

The restaurant offered both indoor and outdoor seating. I love particularly the outdoor feel. They have 2 strong fan to cool the area.

At Godmama, they offered mainly Peranakan cuisine however on the weekends during brunch hours, they created a special Peranakan Brunch menu. I love the idea and was excited to try them out.

From Godmama Brunch Menu

First is the All-star Egg Skin in Popiah ($6.50). The signature itemis available on all the menu at Godmama. The egg skin is extremely delicate with tasty turnip and other ingredients in the wrap.

Adapted from the BBQ pulled pork, at Godmama, the Pulled Pork Pongteh Sunny ($15.90) is offered. Using Pongteh Pork; cooked with the Peranakan traditional recipe with fermented bean sauce and soy sauce. A pity the flavour was weak.

Next was the Babi Assam Baked Eggs ($16.90), a marriage of familiar Peranakan flavour with common brunch item, baked egg. It was a shame that it was too spicy for me.

Among the savoury brunch item, Buah Keluak Bolognese Pasta ($19.90) is my favourite. I love buah keluak, but I prefer this unique flavour to be stronger and less of the tomato flavour.

Finally, washed it down with lightly chewy and yet fluffy Banana Pengat Buttermilk Pancakes ($17.90).

NAHMJ Verdict

Overall it was an encouraging to see how creative the chef at Godmama can get. However I suspect, it may satisfy only a small population. Personally, I was expecting a stronger Peranakan character in the brunch item. For those who dislike this cuisine, I believe, no matter how water down the flavour is, they may still can’t accept it.

Opened in 2016 was the first table service, recently, Marks & Spencer’s Cafe launches exciting M&S Cafe new menu items, ranging from Breakfast to Starters, Mains and Sharing Platters. A pity, there isn’t new dessert items.

The cafe offers a capacity of 60 seaters is located right next to the side entrance of Wheelock Place, nearest to the Food Hall.

M&S Cafe New Menu

I counted 20 M&S Cafe New Menu item across the different categories and we tried half of them.

Breakfast

Fuelled the day with Continental Breakfast for One ($18++) for those who believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This wholesome set for one consist of a slice of toast (white or wholemeal), a buttery crossiant, yoghurt with berries and granola cum butter and jam served with a coffee or tea.

For some lighter, Bircher Museli ($8++) comprises of traditional bircher muesli with berries in greek yoghurt is a good option.

Sandwiches & Salads

A vegan option, Sweet Potato Falafel Salad ($15++) with choice of Italian or Caesar dressing. I love the flavourful sweet potato falafel even though it was a little dry.

Fsh Finger Sandwich with French Fries ($16++)

Mains

Choose from crowd favourite Chicken & Mushroom Pappardelle ($18++) which is also my fave among all the dishes. The white wine aroma in the pasta sauce elevated the flavour.

Wood Fired Chicken & Mozzarella Pizza ($24++) good for two came with a side salad was crowned with generous amount of cheese, chicken and tomato.

Lastly, Indian dishes are also available. Choose Chicken Korma Curry ($19++) for diner who can’t tolerate high spiciness level. If you prefer slightly more spicy, opt for the Prawn Bhuna Curry ($23++). If you have high spice tolerance, these items may not satisfy your needs.

Sharing Platter

On M&S Cafe New Menu, there are a handful sharing platter, we tried 2 of them. First is the Cheese Board ($21) comprises 5 cheeses, chutney, cracker and grapes.

The other option is the Mediterranean Platter ($18) with pita bread, 3 dips, cucumber and olives. Diner could order the Barossa Chardonnay by the glasses ($13) to go with the platters.

NAHMJ Verdict

If you love any of the M&S Cafe New menu item, you can get them as ready-pack meal or ingredients to replicate at home.

My most recent visit to a French Patisserie in Singapore was Voyage Patisserie. Weeks apart, I travelled all the way to the west for Lee’s Confectionery. If you are a Westie, you must read this post. This new and promising French Patisserie situated at Block 343 Jurong East Street 31 is worth exploring.

As usual, only after my visit I being to read other blog posts and got to know that the owner cum chef pâtissier, Lee Yin Quan, graduated from Ferrandi Paris majored in French pastry. Before striking out on his own, he worked under famous Michelin Star chef pâtissier such as Jean-François Piège and Nina Métayer.

Upon entering the nothing extravagant or impressive cafe but into a space of minimalist in mainly white and pine wood colour furnishing, almost instantaneously, my vision was captured by the sparingly counter that showcased 6 pastries neatly in a row with a description placed beside the pastry. There were JIAO ($8), TART ($8), MADU ($8), YOJI ($8), PUFF ($8) and PLUCK ($8). All items are on rotational basis. I wished I could eat them all. Since I was alone, I ordered only 2 pastries.

TART ($8)

First is a highly sourish tart that will make your face grimaced. But I love exactly the way it is. Aside the lime curd, the chef has ingeniously added almond cake. I love the nuttiness among tanginess.

PUFF ($8)

Lured to this puff pastry as it sandwiched a local ingredient, Kaya and my favourite Earl Grey in a light but intense cream.

Lee’s Confectionery Menu

NAHMJ Verdict

Lee’s Confectionery is a welcomed patisserie in the west serving delicate French haute patisserie. Personally, I felt there are still room for improvement in the delivery and execution of a more refined pastries before they are comparable to my favourite French pastry cafe in Singapore, Mad About Sucre.

My first encounter with Rocky Master was decade ago when I worked around Alexandra Technopark where one of the earliest outlet was established. The good news is this outlet still exist today. And recently, Rocky Master @ KINEX was opened in the second quarter of 2019. Since they are Halal, I am sure it will be more than welcome in Katong, especially for the Muslim community.

Feature wall, vibrant vibes are words associated with the cafe. It certainly lifts up one’s mood when entered the cafe. What I really like about the cafe is the well-spaced table, giving some privacy and yet coziness.

Highlights From Rocky Master Menu

I remember fondly of the Asian and pizza items that Rocky Master offered in the early 2000s. Their menu has since expanded with a good mix of Asian, Western. I find the Asian-inspired Western items most attractive.

Yong Wei Kai of Sgcafehopping whom invited me along to Rocky Master @ KINEX, highly recommends the Pan-fried Carrots With Prawns ($8). After devouring it with the chilli, I fully understand why the choice. Aromatic and eggy together with the highly addictive chilli is the killer combination.

For those who love satay must try the Chicken Satay Charcoal Burger ($13). The thick luscious chicken satay patty tasted exactly like your chicken satay skewer. To make it more alike, the sweetish peanut sauce sandwiched between the charcoal sesame burger together with slices of cucumber and onion to complete the look, texture and flavour.

Wash down with either the Iced Yuzu or Matcha Latte. Both are lightly sweetened. If you prefer a fruity drink, the former is a good choice. The latter is certainly the prefer for Matcha fan. It did have a good sense of matcha flavour.

Without dessert is never a complete meal. Rocky Master offered a mouth-watering selection of dessert. I couldn’t decide what I want. With the recommendation from the service crew, we opted for Tiramisu. The lack of alcohol was not an important factor as it was made up for the perfect ratio of mascarpone cheese, sponge, chocolate and coffee.

NAHMJ Verdict

Rocky Master @ KINEX offers not only delicious Halal food that won’t break the bank but also good service and ambience.

Merci Marcel x A Summer In Paris in one of the most alluring collaboration. A French cafe teaming up with a French Patisserie and the result is a a sweet lineup of “haute” French Patisserie, exactly what it was stated in this special menu.

In case, you know neither cafe. First, Merci Marcel is popular French cafe with 2 outlets. The first Merci Marcel is in Tiong Bahru and subsequently, the second Merci Marcel is at Club Street. As for A Summer in Paris, this French Patisserie is helmed by Pastry Chef Yann Brys who was awarded the prestige “Meilleur Ouvrier de France”. This award is one of the highest accolade one could achieve in the French culinary scene.

Since I have a sweet tooth and since I have not tried any of the Patisserie from this renown Pastry Chef at A Summer in Paris Singapore or Hotel Brach Paris, I don’t want to miss this opportunity.

Merci Marcel x A Summer In Paris

In this menu, there were a total of 4 Haute French Patisseries.

Exotic ($12)

A creation using tropical fruits; coconut & lemon moelleux, exotic mousse with a centre mango and passionfruit coulis. Overall was well balance with fruity hint and I could savour the various elements among the complex layer of ingredients. This was my favourite among the 4.

Folie Douce ($13)

The most sour among the 4. Consist of jasmine moelleux and raspberry compote on a thin shortbread. Populated with mainly raspberry aroma.

Merci Marcel ($13.50)

For the chocolate fan, this was not to be missed. Bittersweet Guanaja chocolate mousse with caramel creme and chocolate genoise. Despite having caramel as a component in this pastry, it wasn’t overly saccharine.

Tourbillon ($12)

Chef Yann Brys is well known for its Swirl Cake technique hence the Tourbillon surely has to be on the menu. Lemon curd filled the crumbly biscuit tart, completed the look with swirl of yuzu light meringue. If you prefer sweetish lemon tart, this is created specially for you.

NAHMJ Verdict

On the Menu of Merci Marcel x A Summer In Paris, there is something for everyone, depending on your preference. Whether you are a chocolate or fruity; sweet or sourish, you will find your favourite item.

Merci Marcel Club Street is the second outlet after overwhelming respond at Tiong Bahru outlet. I visited their first cafe when newly opened, however, I didn’t post about them. Hopefully, I have time to re-visit them soon and find time to write.

This one is located at the entrance of Club Street. Access from Cross Street and turn left into Club Street, you will spot them on your left. I can’t recall what occupied previously, but I am pretty sure it was some F&B.

Interestingly, I visited on the first day of Lunar New Year 2019 with 2 foodie friends for brunch.

Space at Merci Marcel is brightly illuminated by natural light which somehow result in a more spacious feel. We love the vibes here more than the one at Tiong Bahru. In addition, during non-work days, the business district is serene.

At a glance, the menu offered at both Club Street and Tiong Bahru were similar dishes. I couldn’t spot the difference without comparing the 2 menu side by side.

Since it is a French cafe, the service crew at French F&B often will start you off with a drink. Likewise for Merci Marcel, kick-off the brunch with coffee. My usual turn to drink is no surprise, got to be the Cappuccino. The cuppa is medium acidity, medium body with dark berry flavour notes.

Besides the usual ingredients like ham and poached eggs on the Benedict Eggs ($21), sandwiched between the layer is a portobello mushroom. At $21, this platter wasn’t cheap.

Next is an item which we love, the Ravioles de Royans ($18-S/$28-L). An extremely rich creamy dish consisting of cream and cheese. It can be too cloying if attempting to finish alone.

Last but not least is the Croissant ($3.50) that I will surely order when I am at Merci Marcel. I love this rendition more than Tiong Bahru Bakery’s since it was not as sweet, comparatively.

NAHMJ Verdict

Merci Marcel Club Street provides the same standard as Tiong Bahru with similar vibes but at a more accessible location since it is flanked between Telok Ayer and Chinatown MRT station.

After successful year of operating the cafe, Thyme At Rochester, folks behind this al fresco cafe that is surrounded by greens opened their second cafe, Thyme At Aliwal. They occupied the cafe formerly known as Eat Play Love.

Thyme at Aliwal has a complete different vibe from the first. This is an indoor cafe with air-conditioning and a playful interior. For those who lament about the heat at Rochester but loves their food, you can opt to enjoy them at this outlet.

Menu at Thyme At Aliwal is similar to the Rochester outlet. What’s more, be rest assured of the quality and standard too.

This round, I chose different items from what I tried at Rochester. Though not a big fan of mushroom, an exception is for the Portobello, hence I opted
Portobello with Mango Mayo ($14). I was curious of the sauce, mango chutney with mayo was a killer combination, perfect for the breaded shroom.

Pan-seared Norwegian Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce ($22) is another amazing item. Alluring crispy skin on the surface of the fillet was the plus point. Lemon Butter Sauce coupled with the salmon was superb. At the bottom was a bed of perfectly grilled vegetables.

I was Apple Crumble With Ice Cream

NAHMJ Verdict

Personally, I prefer Thyme At Aliwal to Thyme At Rochester, as it has air-condition.

Last year, we indulged on the DIY Tortilla Wraps and this round we savour their tasty Taco And Mount-Garita at Crossroad Cafe.

Beside this promotion, Crossroad Cafe at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza brings East-meets-West with a wide menu of signature dishes, premium wines by the glass and draft beers on tap.

Taco And Mount-Garita At Crossroad Cafe

When the boring-looking taco without sides were served, I was skeptical. The plain-looking with char-grilled marking Taco wrap did not send the delicious vibes to my brain.

Relunctantly, I took the first bite and was immediately blown away by how the combination of flavours from the ingredients and the sauce has created. This is especially true for the Beer Battered Cod Fish Taco.

A total of 5 flavours were offered; Coffee & Chermoula Braised Beef Cheeks ($30++), Crab Cake ($30++), Wan Hao Char Siu Pork ($28++) or Beer Battered Cod Fish ($32++). Each serving has 3 Tacos. A pity, you can’t mix and match your choices and there was no side. The average eater can stomach 2.

We tried all except the Crab Cake and my fave is the Beer Battered Cod Fish Taco. It is extremely difficult to pick the winner this round as each has its unique factor which makes it tasty. I suppose it is down to preference and mood as well.

If you love Margarita, time to be at the Crossroad Cafe with like-minded friends to slurp the Mount-garita ($60++). 3 flavours to choose from; Lime, Strawberry and Mango. Each gaint can serve approximately 6 person.

Between the Lime and Strawberry that we tried, we love the latter.

Promotion

Both the Taco And Mount-Garita at Crossroad Cafe are available till 28 February 2019.

At every Chinese New Year, Bak Kwa is a highlight at this festival as such to welcome the year of Pig, launching Eggs ‘n Tings CNY Specials at the sole outlet located at the New Wing of Plaza Singapura, level 3.

Eggs ‘n Things, An Egg and Pancake All Day Breakfast cafe, partnered with Bee Cheng Hiang to offer delectable limited edition items. In this Eggs ‘n Tings CNY Specials, a total of 4 items are on the menu.

Eggs ‘n Things CNY Specials

In the Eggs ‘n Things CNY Specials menu, there are 2 savoury items, a sweet dish and a drink, all bringing the CNY theme.

Bee Cheng Hiang Bak Kwa Garlic Fried Rice ($15.88)

True to its name, the garlic fried rice consists of lots of eggs. The generous amount of the sweetish Bee Cheng Hiang Bak Kwa complemented the garlicky fried rice. Though a pity, it lacked of wok hei, otherwise, it would be perfect.

Eggs Benedict with Crackling Roasted Pork Belly ($18.88)

Next is a true brunch item with a twist. Replacing the usual smoked salmon or ham for Crackling Roasted Pork Belly is extremely innovative and brought the CNY vibes to the fullest.

My friend who dined with me find it extremely salty. As for me, it was at the perfect amount of salt. Anything less wouldn’t be as enjoyable.

Azuki Mochi Pancake with White Chocolate Ganache ($18.88)

In this Eggs ‘n Things CNY Specials menu, there is a sweet item. Adding nuts to the classic Eggs ‘n Things’ pancake batter gave a good crunch to the texture. Lastly, dressed the pancake with an orangish white chocolate ganache to give it a CNY feel. As such, you got to eat the 4 layers of pancake together, instead of one at a time, otherwise, you don’t get the white chocolate ganache for the remaining 3 pancakes.

Personally, I was thinking of a mandarin orange infused dark or white chocolate ganache instead. My preference would always be the former.

Honey Mint Grapefruit Green Tea ($8.88)

Another orange item which is fitting to the CNY theme. The sweetish citrusy tea refreshing and the dash of mint fragrance uplifting the flavour.

NAHMJ Verdict

There maybe hits and miss. And we agree with some and disagree with others but We both acknowledged the effort. We do think it is a good try especially the savoury dishes and we love them.

Rising from a bakery to cafe, Spatula, now not only offers delicious bake but also various brunch items. Located within Kampong Glam with Muslim community dominating the area, it is a Halal cafe, in case, you are wondering.

Spanning across two levels of the shophouse, with cafe at level 1 and private event space at level 2. Various pink and pastel shade don the space. With the lighting it gives a little whimiscal feel. The fairy light over at the event space created an even more cosy ambience.

Milkshakes are highly recommended by the service crew. 9 selections, with some fruity and some nutty. Funfetti ($8) was the crowd-favourite, however, we decided to go with our preferences, Speculoos ($9) and Nutella ($9). The former was too light and it was akin to vanilla, no Speculoos was savoured. As a vanilla, it wasn’t a bad choice though. The latter was a better choice.

We got an item from the Brunch menu, Brunch Platter ($17). Comprises of 2 slices of Cinnamon French Toast, 2 Grilled Chicken Sausages, 2 Scrambled Eggs, Sauteed Spinach and Sauteed Tomatoes, the serving was generous.

Spatula At Bussorah Street, From Bakery To Cafe - Spicy Chicken Pizza Toast ($16)

Next was the Spicy Chicken Pizza Toast ($16) from the Mains menu. Lots of chicken sausage with abundant cheese sat on a bed of spicy tomato sauce base and multigrain bread. Accompanied with shoestring fries and greens.

Spatula At Bussorah Street, From Bakery To Cafe - S'Mores Waffle ($9)

6 difference waffles selection with either half or full porition were offered. Our choice was the S’Mores Waffle ($9 half portion). Half a Vanilla Waffle with Chocolate Ice Cream drizzled with chocolate sauce and mini marshmallow.

Spatula At Bussorah Street, From Bakery To Cafe - Caramelised Banana

Personally, I prefer the Banana Fosters ($8.50); a plate of caramelised banana with vanilla ice cream. If Spatula could serve a premium ice cream, the experience would be better.

NAHMJ Verdict

Overall, the portion served at Spatula was huge, value-for-money was the conclusion.
