One Meal Around Thailand At Baan Ying Singapore – Novena, Singapore

Baan Ying Singapore is presenting One Meal Around Thailand from 9 July till 30 September with the support of the Toursim Authority of Thailand. They recently received the Royal Thai Government’s Thai SELECT Premium’ award for quality Thai cuisine, beautiful interior and outstanding service.

We are no stranger to Baan Ying with our most recent visit for the Great Baan Ying Brunch. It’s always a joy to revisit a restaurant that you will be reassured of the quality.

One Meal Around Thailand

Baan Ying offers three set menus; for two (Superior Set), four (Deluxe Set) and eight persons (Grand Tour Set) priced at $58.80++, $128.80++ and $298.80++ respectively. The objective was to feature the different dishes in North, North-East, Central and South regions of Thailand.

We were privileged to try the Grand Tour Set which comprises 12 dishes from starters to desserts.

Starters

Diners are served a welcome drink, Fresh Coconut complemented with an Amuse Bouche, Larb Gai.

Appetiser

Whet your appetite with Nam Prik from 4 regions. This dish is about enjoying the fresh raw vegetable produce with chilli dips. The version at Baan Ying Singapore is adapted with poached vegetable instead. First dip is the crowd favourite, Nam Prik Goong Seab (Dried Shrimp Chilli Dip) from the Southern region, also the least spicy. Next is a dip made with Thai fish sauce, tamarind and dried chillies, Nam Prik Tah Daeng (Red Chilli Dip). Followed by the Northeastern Thai, Soup Makuer (Spicy Thai Eggplant Chilli Dip). Lastly is a dip representing Sukhothai way of life, Lhon Pla Kem (Salted Fish Dip).

Appetising Som Tum Platter with assorted toppings with customised spicy level. To ensure that you get to enjoy it freshed, they prepare it at the table.

Kub Kao (Main)

A total of 6 mains. First is the sweetish Gaeng Hang Leh (Pork Belly Curry), a traditional curry of Northern Thailand with Myanmar-influence.

One of my favourite dish in the Grand Tour Set is a dish from Southern Thailand, Sator Pad Goong (Stir-fried Bitter Bean with Shrimp). The scent of fish sauce, garlic, petai mingled together with the minced meat created an unique flavour which is probably an acquired taste.

Silky Khai Pam (Grilled Omelette) with banana leaf aroma is comparative to the Chawanmushi’s texture. This is a dish from the Northern-rendition.

Next is another traditional dish from the Southern region, comforting Gai Tom Kamin (Chicken Soup in Tumeric Broth). Tumeric was not overpower the chicken soup, in fact, it elevated the flavour.

One last main, Gaeng Tae Po Pla Kem (Salted Fish and Morning Glory in Coconut Milk Soup), no photo, is akin to our vegetable curry but with intense coconut flavour and kaffir lime hint.

Dessert

Round-up the One Meal Around Thailand with Creme Brulee Cha Thai (Thai Milk Tea Creme Brulee), accompanied with Herbal Tea (Mulberry, Lemongrass or Bael Fruit). I love the dessert, aromatic Thai Milk Tea custard with savoury hint not has the perfect sweetness level.

NAHMJ Verdict

Savouring the dishes from other region in Thailand that we were not exposed previously at One Meal Around Thailand at Baan Ying Singapore is not only a feast but an educational meal to the Thai cuisine.
