Momma Kong's At Mosque Street, Reunion Of Crab - Set For Four

Momma Kong’s At Mosque Street, Reunion Of Crab – Chinatown, Singapore

Momma Kong’s has been around for quite awhile and has made a name for themselves for serving one of the best Crab in Singapore. I jumped upon the chance when my friend asked me to suggest a place for a gathering since it has been on my bucket list though we gathered for crab at Golden Spoon Seafood Restaurant last month.

Located in the heart of Chinatown, Mosque Street is parallel to the tourist stretch, Pagoda Road. If you are coming from Chinatown MRT station, look for Exit A.

Interior is simple with functional furniture and fixture. The chairs are mismatch.

Set For Four At Momma Kong’s

I visited Momma Kong’s with 4 friends. It was ladies night. We thought it made sense to order set for 4 for five diners which turned out to be sufficient.

Small Plate

In this set menu, you get 1 small plate. A pity, there isn’t alternative, you get Grilled Squid. Smoky, tender, lightly chewy. We recommend that you dip it with the belanchan chilli for maximum flavour if you can tolerate spiciness.

Light Bite

Choice of Tofu Chips or Luncheon Meat Crisps. Our carnivore diner, quickly opted for the latter. Most of us love this crispy chip, but I defer, I didn’t enjoy as I prefer to have the soft texture and bold flavour of the original luncheon.

Crayfish

Option of Butter, Spicy and Cereal are available for Crayfish. We opted Cereal. Among all the dishes, this is the least impressive. Maybe cereal don’t go well with this crustacean. I might give it another chance and try it with butter or spicy the next round.

Vegetables

Five selections were offered; Shanghai Greens, Salted Fish Bean Sprouts, Sambal Kangkong, Garlic Kangkong and Stir-fried Dou Miao. Since we have diners who don’t like bean sprouts and prefer non-spicy, choices were narrowed down and it made decision easy. We opted for Garlic Kangkong and Stir-fried Dou Miao; garlicky with light wok hei.

Signature Crabs

Being with choosing 2 signature Crab from 8 flavours; Black Pepper, Red Chilli, Bee Hoon Soup, Butter, Freshly Steamed, Grilled, White Pepper and Salted Egg Yolk. It was no brainer for us since they are fame for their Red Chilli and Bee Hoon Soup. Though I am equally keen to try Butter and Salted Egg, I will leave that for my subsequent visit.

I was surprised to find the Red Chilli Crab, neither on the spicy or sweet spectrum. Interestingly, it was more sourish, whetting the appetite.

Thick aromatic broth in the Bee Hoon Soup Crab is tasty with well-balance body and taste despite lack of Chinese Cabbage to sweeten the soup. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed their rendition.

Fried Rice

Savour the light wok hei in the fried rice studded with generous amount of salted fish. As such, most find the dish too briny. But I love it.

Mantou

Fist size mantou of deep-fried and steamed are available. Personally, I prefer the steamed as the oil was retained on the surface for the former.

Ice Cream Wafers

For dessert, the set menu offers a choice of Durian, Chocolate, Ripple and Yam. I believe these are the Magnolia Ice Cream, nothing fantastic, but it is good that dessert is provided to round-up the meal.

Home-Brewed Drinks

Choice of Barley and Water Chestnut, all are cold drink. A pity, there wasn’t hot drink option. The drinks were at an acceptable saccharine level. Though I wouldn’t mind if it could be a little less sweetened.

NAHMJ Verdict

Based on this visit to Momma Kong’s, I would suggest to have only their crab. As for other dishes, I think we can do without.
