Birds Of A Feather has been in the limelight for serving some said contemporary Sichuan food while I would describe it as Modern with Western-style. In any case, it was a captivating concept for foodie to explore. As much as I would love to dine there since the day they opened their door to patrons, I never step foot till a day in August 2018. And yes, I know it is a long over due post. Too much business travel, I blamed for the delay.
Located along the same stretch of Amoy Street’s shophouses occupied by Ding Dong and Bochinche Cocina, Birds Of A Feather recently revamped the menu and a foodie friend who was invited for the tasting was full of praise and this set me determined to give them a try.
The Food
Some of the buzz dishes were Tofu Burger with Mapo Meat Sauce, Seared Japanese Madai, Pig Ear Mosaic, Fortune Skewer in Sichuan Pepper Broth.
Our first dish was the classic Laziji (laziji), known as Find The Chicken In The Chillies ($16) at Birds Of A Feather. We have an extremely positive impression on this dish. It was at a comfortable spicy level and more importantly, the numbing spiciness was felt.
Next was the Pig Ear Mosaic ($18), the crunchy pig ear sat on a bed of spicy and sourish cold noodle. A highly appetising dish.
Tender, melt-in-the-mouth “Hong Shao” Short Ribs ($38), a pity the meat didn’t absorb the flavour.
‘Xiang Su’ Duck ($33) was an extremely disappointing dish. Recommended by the service crew to be duck cooked in two-way certainly sounded tempting. First was the Duck Confit with mashed potato beneath. We enjoyed since the meat was tender and tasty. On the end of the spectrum was the tough Braised Seared Duck Meat.
Rarely seen using Black Rice in Risotto, the Forbidden Risotto ($35) cooked with Sichuan sour vegetables and pickled ginger and a shoyu dressing has an Asian twist. My first experience of Risotto with Black Rice was at Monti, a memorable one.
Tropical Mousse Cake ($11) was new on the menu, consisted of Passionfruit coulis and Dehydrated Cirtus Chip was a fruity and citrusy flavour.
Last dish of the night was the Monotone ($15), a plated dessert of Black and White Sesame components. Comprises Black Sesame coulis & coral sponge versus White Sesame parfait & oil powder. Lastly, Sesame Sable and light Coconut Mousse. Though it was alluring, we find the coconut flavour was not prominent. It was masked by the sesame aroma.
NAHMJ Verdict
Even if you love Sze Chuan Food, you may not enjoy the dishes served at Birds Of A Feather, unless you dine with an open mind. Overall, we felt there are more hits than misses.
