Un-Yang-Kor-Dai (which means Anything Goes) specialises in Isan Thai Food (North-eastern region of Thai). The ingredients commonly used in preparing Isan Food are chili peppers, lime, peanuts, dried shrimp, fresh fruits and vegetables, sticky rice, cilantro, mint and other fresh herbs. It explains the bold, complex and flavourful dishes that are created. Hailed from Khao Yai, Thailand, the Singapore outlet found its home at unit 57 of South Bridge Road.
Singapore has no lack of Thai restaurants, and the F&B scene is cut-throat competitive. And I am surprised that they chose a off-the-radar location.
Interior looks rather raw with cemented flooring. The frames of art and painting decorated the otherwise plain-looking empty space. Tables and chairs are function with not much comfy factor.
Commence of dinner with a refreshing Drink. I ordered my favourite Iced Lemongrass and Pandan ($4.80) while my friend opted for Iced Butterfly Pea with Lime ($5.50). Both drinks were amazing, especially the latter drink. Lime flavour with the sparkling soda was simply wonderful.
While waiting for our food, we have the addictive complimentary crackers to go along with our drinks.
From The Menu
One of the popular Isan dishes is the Thai Papaya Salad with Fresh Prawns ($13.50). Each of the flavour is distinct. The nuttiness from the abundant peanut set this dish apart from its competitors.
Tom Yum Fresh Prawns soup (with coconut milk) was the signature, though we opted for Tom Yum Fresh Prawns, Clear Soup ($18.90). The harmless looking clear soup is highly appetising and at the same time tongue-burning as it was quite spicy even though we have requested for less spicy.
Stir-Fried Morning Glory with Chilli and Garlic ($11) commonly found on Thai menu, also a crowd-favourite, is a yet another highly spicy dish. We love it as the wok hei.
Steamed Whole Sea Bass (500g) in Spicy Lime Sauce ($28) was a fiery spicy dish; steamed to perfection with the punching sauce. Heated over a small flame, can cause over cooked to the fish. Therefore, it is good to finish up the fish as soon as it was served.
Easily one of the best Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango ($9). Paring the aromatic coconut infused sticky rice with an equal amount of sweet Mango was simply perfect.
NAHMJ Verdict
The food whipped at Un-Yang-Kor-Dai are above mediocre. I would describe them as authentic Thai Food. Delicious as they may be, the dishes are fiery spicy too. Do remember to ask for less spice if you can’t tolerate spicy food too well.
