I love dinning around The Bund, especially, taking the seats next to a window with such magnificent view of Lujiajui Skyline. Some of the restaurants around The Bund that offers this sight are Hakkasan, Whampoa Club, Wei Jing Ge Restaurant and Shook! Shanghai Restaurant. This round I visited Mr & Mrs Bund, Modern Eatery by Paul Pairet for Sunday Brunch.
Mr & Mrs Bund in Shanghai, China is by Paul Pairet who’s Ultraviolet Restaurant in Shanghai was ranked number 41 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurant 2017. It is Shanghai’s first restaurant offering late night dining.
Interior was with Modern European theme. The space is divided into 3 section, a section near the window with good view of The Bund and the second section with comfy sofa while the third is the private dinning area. We got a table next to a window with view of the financial institution building making up of the majestic skyline of Lujiazui.
Both Set Menu and Ala Carte were offered at Mr & Mrs Bund. For ease of mind, we opted from the Set Menu. A total of 7 Set Menu ranging from CNY 250 to CNY 580 per guest. I was tempted to selected the Splurgy CNY 580 meal, however, I think it is too expensive for my China ex-colleague hence, at the end, I chose the Mr & Mrs Bund Set which set us back at CNY 380.
We asked for 2 glasses of warm water before we placed our order, however, after the order, complimentary bread was served and not the initial request. 2 types of bread, the baguette and sourdough were in the bread basket. I prefer the former since I am not a sourdough fan.
Subsequently, the Amuse Bouche came. Amazed by this simple dish of beetroot with pepper and a fantastic sauce. A good start to the meal.
First course was the Tomato Mozza Salad consisting of 3-types of heirloom tomato and vinaigrette-like dressing.
Followed up closed was the Picnic Chicken Ailloli, Char-grilled sous vide Chicken Breast with ailloli sauce sandwiched between the meat was tasty. I am not a fan of sous vide meat, and yet I find this acceptable. The sauce elevated the taste profile of the white meat.
Accompanied the chicken was a bowl of Rocket Salad.
Next was the Black Cod “In The Bag” PP. The Black Cod Fillet was simmered in heat proof bag with a Cantonese Sauce, per the description.
To serve, the service crew, cut a corner of the bag and pour the sauce into a bowl with sparing Jasmine Rice. Next, she unwrapped the bag and dished out fish into the shallow-bowl.
The Cod Fish was served with Spinach Garlic Asiate which we find the vegetable a little over-cooked.
By the side was a thicken sauce for guest who find the fish bland. Ironically, we found the sauce too rich for the fish.
Lastly was dessert. 2 desserts were in the set. First was the “Orange & Orange Tart” PP. A whole orange skin was stewed and filled with Orange Sorbet & Curd cum Vanilla Chantilly. Added Crumbs into the filling for crunchy texture. Personally, we find the dessert a little too candied.
Next was the smooth chocolaty alcoholic Mousse Au Chocolat MMB. Between the Chocolate Mousse layer were Rum and Hazelnut.
NAHMJ Verdict
Dinning at Mr & Mrs Bund would certainly cause a significant damage to one’s wallet. Assess from the quality versus price, it may not be worthwhile.
