Since I am at Shanghai, I can’t help but to try as many Shanghainese Restaurant as I can on each trip. Previously, I tried Maggie’s Restaurant, Maison de L’hui, Wei Jing Ge Restaurant and Whampoa Club. On this recent trip in April, first I tried Home’s Private Restaurant. Followed by Grape Restaurant 葡萄园 with a group of colleague since this restaurant was round the corner of the office.
When we arrived at the restaurant, first floor was full. We got to go up to the second floor with only 2 private rooms left. Fortunately, we came slightly earlier, otherwise, these are gone too.
Exterior reflected vintage while interior was modern with an European touch.
My colleague who have been to the restaurant recommended the Lotus Root with Glutinous Rice Stuffing as she loves it. Well braised lotus roots that absorbed the essence with glutinous rice stuffed in the gap. Taste-wise was lightly sweet.
Lightly spicy Stir-fried Glass Noodle was well-received by our French colleagues. Personally, I find the dish wasn’t unique except for salty flavour.
Despite it isn’t fame for Peking Roast Duck, we order the Roast Duck Skin for our French colleagues to try. Disappointingly, they weren’t brave to try. The skin wasn’t as crispy though it has a good amount of fats on it. The sweet dark sauce was decent.
Glistening reddish appetising looking Braised Beef was not up to our expectation. Taste almost like the beef jerky didn’t impress anyone of us.
Sweet and Sour Pork, a familiar dish to Singaporean. The Shanghainese version is very much alike.
Spinach was fresh with enough of salt added hence it was tasty.
Next was a Green in thick soup with mushroom and shrimps. A flavourful dish due to the soup.
We ended our meal with 2 desserts; both are Glutinous Rice Ball, one deep fried with red bean paste and there was orange flavour in it. While the second was the small balls with sesame paste in wine sweet soup lacking if the wine fragrance and was a little too syrupy. Each has its own fan.
NAHMJ Verdict
Grape Restaurant 葡萄园 serves home-styled dishes though it wasn’t as impressive as some Shanghainese restaurant that I tried, it is good enough for a meal.
