Whenever I am in Shanghai, I have to try one Shanghainess Restaurant. This round as I was meeting 2 friends whom are ex-colleauges, one of them who really know where the good food are recommended me a few Chinese restaurants and I pick Home’s Private Restaurant (Home’s 私房菜).

 

Home’s Private Restaurant (Home’s 私房菜) is one of the very popular and well received restaurant in Shanghai. If you look at dianping.com, you will find lots of positive review with overall rating of 4.5 out of 5. 

 

 

 

Spanned across a 3-storey building along Julu Road, which is along stretch filled with lots of fabulous restaurants. I tried one other Shanghainess Restaurant and cafe that are on this road, Maison de L’hui and Ever Naked Bakery respectively. Reservation is a must at Home’s Private Restaurant, unless you don’t mind arriving with disappointment. All the tables at level 2 were occupied on the day of our visit. And I am warned you, the guests drunk lots of alcohol and it was rowdy when they were high.

 

A very popular Shanghainess dish is the Smoked Fish. Lightly caramelised savour outer sauce coated the surface with crispy outer and soft flesh, it proved to be a great appetiser. The bones though soft enough to consume, we should to spit them out.

 

 

 

Braised Pork Belly is a highly recommended dish, not by the restaurant, but by the reviews. I am not a fan of fats however, I tried a piece. The fats with the skin were chewy and the remaining melt-in-mouth hence there were no cloying feel.

 

 

 

Pan-fried Glutinous Rice Cake was my favourite dish of the night. In spite my indigestion of glutinous rice, I ate more than I should as it was really very delicious. Lightly crispy surface with soft and soft inner, with the natural fragrance, it was simply heavenly.

 

3 Types of Vegetable with Mushroom was mainly a cauliflower dish. I am not a fan of cauliflower hence to me it was but a plate of healthy fibre.

 

 

 

Lastly was a dish that taste better than its look. I was surprised that such a humble dish, Stewed Braised Beancurd, which consists of thin stripe of beancurd taste fantastic. I believe that it taste this good due to the superior stock used in the dish.

 

 

NAHMJ Verdict

 

If you aren’t looking for any posh-looking restaurant but instead focusing only on taste, Home’s Private (Home’s 私房菜) is an excellent choice.
