Ramen Nagi Launches Limited Edition Ramen, The Tomato King – Suntec City, Singapore

Ramen Nagi is launching a limited edition ramen, Tomato King, on 2nd April. Only 400 bowls will be up for grabs so make your way there before they are all gone!

For any ramen to measure up to my taste, there are four main areas that I focus on: 1) Soup base 2) Noodles 3) Egg and 4) Char Siew. Nevertheless, the look of the bowl of Tomato King alone was already enough to make my mouth water.

Tomato King

Implicit in the name of this ramen edition, the broth has been infused with tomatoes to bring out a sweeter and refreshing twist of the tonkotsu soup base. The taste is distinctly unique from the basic Butao King ramen. Not sure if it was the Umami flavor at play but I found myself sipping non-stop at the reddish-tinged broth even though I was already full.

The thin and long noodles complemented the soup base which was not too salty like most ramen broth in the market. Given that there were 5 levels of firmness for one to choose from, anybody would be pleased with the springiness of the noodles.

The egg which was a top-up item has firm whites and a flowing yolk, the type that one normally gets in Japan. Besides being perfectly half-done, the whites had a mildly braised and salty taste that sets it apart from the eggs that I have eaten in other ramen. I would strongly recommend topping up for the egg here.

Despite choosing the pork belly over the shoulder for the char siew meat, it turned out well and not as fatty as I had thought it would be. There were three large slices in the bowl and on top of them, a loose ball of seasoned minced pork. The char siew might not have been the best that I have had but I could almost always taste meat with each mouthful of noodles and it satiated my carnivorous nature.

NAHMJ Verdict

Tasty and unique. The portion was huge with lots of ingredients, definitely worth every single cent of it. I can’t wait to go back for Tomato King again!
