Min Jiang At One North was a company luncheon to celebrate the Chinese New Year. I love this period as I love Lo Hei. Blessed to have a number of delicious feast such as at Park Hotel Clarke Quay, Amara Hotel and Mellben Signature.
Housed in a black and white 2-storey colonial bungalow enclosed by green giving diners a crisp clean air.
Instead of nuts or pickles, Golden Coin Minced Bak Kwa were the snacks.
At all Chinese New Year meal, Lo Hei is a must. Therefore the first dish of the 8-course lunch began with Salmon For Yu Sheng.
After all the good wishes were uttered, tossing starts to create a good luck mess. A great impression as all diners sang praises of this dish.
Second course is the Braised Sea Maw Soup with Shredded Abalone and Sea Treasures. Flavourful broth however the starch was too abundant resulting in some lumpy pieces.
Deep Fried Crispy Soft Shell Crab with Garlic Shallot and Prawns with Wasabi Mayonnaise Dressing was a dish with more misses. The Prawns dressing consisted of mainly mayonnaise with hardly any wasabi flavour. The smaller pieces soft shell crab was dry.
Scallops enjoyed in 2-way, Stir Fried Scallops with vegetables and Pan fried Scallops filled with Shrimp Mousse. We love those surrounded the basket which was the latter. These are tastier. Those fried with vegetables were bland.
Deep fried Sea Perch with Fresh Mango and Plum Sauce has the most mixed review. A portion of the diners found the fish dry, a percentage felt the fish not fresh, next group found it tasteless while the remaining love it. The key to appreciate this dish is to ensure that the fillet is coated with plum sauce and a slice of honey sweet mango augment the flavour. The fishy flavour came from the skin. Be sure to remove it for best experience.
Roast Chicken with Sesame and Chilli Oil was a dish with most diners didn’t enjoy. Most did not like the sauce. Strangely as it may be, the overall taste was sweetish.
Stewed Noodle with King Prawns was decent as the saving grace was the huge prawns.
Overly saccharine Sweet Dumplings with Lotus Seeds and Red Dates in Clear Broth. Sesame paste filled Glutinous Rice Ball itself was sweet so was the clear broth as a result there isn’t much characteristics to the dessert.
NAHMJ Verdict
Mixed review among my colleagues for the luncheon at Min Jiang at One North; some Iove the food while others find it mediocre. My opinion is there are hits and misses. Fortunately, there are hits.
