DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe has opened their second outlet in Singapore! Previously, we also visited their first outlet at Marina Bay Sands Shoppes.

Using www.quandoo.sg, we made a lunch reservation to check out DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe’s second outlet.

At the entrance, you will first be greeted by Superman and a banner advertising their Weekday Set Lunch (Selected Mains + Appetizer/Dessert) at $22.90++. This set does seem affordable though choices are limited.

Inside, you will see more Super Heroes!

And just like the number of DC superheroes, the main menu is as extensive- featuring a kids menu, salads, soups, light bites, wraps, rice, pastas, wood oven pizzas, burgers, grilled meats, breakfasts, live seafood, cakes, cupcakes, waffles, freak desserts, gelato, milkshakes, coffees, sodas, yogurt smoothies, juices, mock-tails and even alcoholic drinks.

Thus, when it was time to order, we naturally ditched the set lunch menu in favor of the ala carte items.

For drinks, we chose the Wonder Woman Royalty Berry Juice and their signature Flying Color Super Fuel.

The Wonder Woman Royalty Berry Juice (S$12.90++) was chosen since it seemed healthy. After all, it was described to be a “fresh berry juice topped with frozen blueberries”. There were indeed fresh blueberries but I wouldn’t call the drink a fresh berry juice. In fact, it tasted like cough syrup. At this point, I was kicking myself for not ordering a fail proof root beer float instead. Anyway, for those who are interested, you can bring this adorable Super Hero Cape Cup home at S$39 (30% off if you order this drink).

Surprisingly though, the Flying Color Super Fuel ($14.90++), which was chosen for its insta-worthiness alone, tasted better. The rainbow colored strawberry orange soda was served with a pink ice cube shaped like Superman’s logo! It is not too sweet and tasted pretty decent. At first sip, I mistook it for a guava juice (the packet kind, not fresh guava juice) but slowly, the orange and strawberry flavors does push through. Not bad for a soda and especially good compared to the berry juice.

By the way, in case you are wondering, complimentary iced water is not served here. Santa Vittora Sparkling/Still water are available at $6.90++ each.

Moving on to the mains, we had the King of Atlantis Crab Leg Aglio Olio and the Island Warrior’s Cheesy Pork Sausage Calzone, both listed as “MUST TRY” in the menu.

According to DC Super Heroes Cafe’s Facebook page, their King of Atlantis Crab Leg Aglio Olio (S$26.90++) is a highly raved dish. And I could see why. Even though it is pricey for a pasta, I find the price justifiable (for a restaurant) considering the generous amount of crab chunks and plump ikura served. On top of it, there is also a poached egg! Pasta choice is linguine, which I feel is suitable for crab pastas. This aglio olio is slightly saucy so I suspect that in addition to olive oil and chilli padi, seafood broth could also be in the mix. Together with lots of fried garlic, this makes the aglio olio really flavorful. Most importantly, as a health conscious mummy-to-be, I appreciate that cherry tomatoes and rockets veggie are in the dish.

The Island Warrior’s Cheesy Pork Sausage Calzone (S$25++) was another recommended dish on the menu. A Calzone is an oven baked folded pizza that looks like a giant curry puff. But since it is a pizza (made from bread dough), it is not as crispy a curry puff. To be truthful, I don’t like calzones. In fact, I have tried the original calzone in Italy and I wasn’t impressed (I prefer crispy thin crust pizzas). But apart from the fact that calzones do not please me because they are not crispy enough, the taste of this calzone (dough and fillings) is not bad. It is also not overly salty. Stuffed with pork sausages, melted mozzarella, capsicum and mushrooms, this makes quite the balanced meal. There is also a tangy tomato sauce served at the side but I hardly used it.

NAHMJ Verdict

Overall, we think that the food quality (can’t say the same for drinks) at DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe is pretty good for a themed cafe. However, we are a little disappointed that very little trace of the superheroes can be found in the dishes itself. That said, there are sufficient superhero figurines and decoration within the cafe, plenty enough for you to immerse yourself in superhero wonderland. So if you like themed cafes, DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe is still worth a visit. Prices are not cheap. But that is expected of a themed cafe in our opinion.
