Joe x Bou Launches New Menu – Downtown, Singapore

We visited Joe and Dough nestled at the business district at Marina Bay Financial Centre. Besides serving sandwich, coffee, tea and cake, they serve the Joe x Bou collaboration artisanal rice bowls. These are exclusive at Marina Bay Link Mall. If you are working there, good news, it’s a great option for lunch. Delivery services are also provided around the area. Check out if your corporate do tie up with them for discounts.

The menu by Joe x Bou contains five different types of bowls: 24hr Truffles Short Rib Beef, 48 degree Mentaiko Salmon, The Kaisen, Salmon Ikura Bowl and Teriyaki Chicken Don. Two types of base are offered, Niigata white rice or salad greens.

We tried three of the bowls that are listed on the menu: 24hr Truffles Short Rib Beef, Teriyaki Chicken Don and Mentaiko Salmon accompanied with salad.

24hr truffled short rib

The 24hr Truffles Short Rib Beef contains tobiko, onsen egg, furikake in addition to beef. The beef is prepared 24 hrs via sous vide and cut upon when  ordered to ensure the best of the meat texture. It’s advisable to eat it promptly when served as we were warned that the beef will turn hard over time. However, we waited for a long time before consuming and the taste and texture is still great. Although the beef looks very raw because of its colour, it tastes fine and savoury, especially for the portions that had more of the spices and herbs.

48 degree mentaiko salmon

48 degree mentaiko salmon bowl comes with mentaiko, tobiko, onsen egg, corn, cherry tomatoes, edmame, furikake. The salmon is cooked at 48 degrees so that its crispy outside and tender insider. The salmon is a bit bland for our liking though.

Teriyaki chicken don

Lastly the  Teriyai chicken don bowl comes with tobiko, onsen egg, corn, cherry tomatoes, edamme, furikake. The teriyaki chicken is tender and flavory and we the taste. The rice base served was fragrant, definitely one of the better Japanese rice we have tasted. The onset egg, once you break it, you could see the runny egg yolk. It mixed well with rice.

We also tried their mini salads which comes with nice soy goma dressing. It’s well balanced. All rice bowls come with the option to add on rice, miso soup, salad or onsen egg.

Matcha yuzu log cake

We ended the meal with some sweet touch: dessert! We like the matcha yuzu log cake which is offered only for this Christmas season. It’s a refreshing combination. The tangy fruity taste of the yuzu was overpowered the matcha sponge cake. We could taste only a little of the matcha. Overall, we still like the taste of the cake.

We also had their fruit cake. The cake was mixed in  saccharine brown sugar, spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, fragrant dried figs and fruits. We find the cake a liitle too sweet.

Cafe latte

Drinks were served too. Both the café latte and the hot chocolate were served in a cup made of cookie dough and lined with rich dark chocolate. The coffee is fine, tastes a little nutty. After the drink, you can eat the cup. The cookie dough is somewhat bland compared to the drink. The dough is quite thick so you will likely take a few bites as part of the experience. It’s interesting to eat the cup nonetheless.

Hot chocolate

The hot chocolate was a little milky, we would prefer a richer chocolate taste. We loved the generous toppings of toasty marshmallows that melt in your mouth after soaking in the hot chocolate.

NAHMJ Verdict

We recommend that you give Joe x Bou a try. We like most the teriyaki chicken don, and will have it again.
