We see major changes to Craig Road; with closure to the familiar and also popular choices of Selfish Gene Cafe and The Plain. Even new comer such as The Kite suffered the same fate. With the closure of many, we welcome a new kid on the block Pastaria Abate.
From the signage, the crest seems to suggest some medieval and royal vibes. As we entered, the interior design was somewhat historic feel though there wasn’t any ornament relating to our first impression.
The dining tables were neatly lined in a row. Pleasant looking overall. However, chairs were back to back hence it wasn’t too easy to maneuver around.
On each table, there was a notice to inform guests that it is a self-service restaurant and they prefer cash and nets to credit cards. Do note that there will be 3% additional charges for payment made with credit cards.
Among 4 diners, we shared a basket of Fresh Garlic Bread ($4.80). The chewy fresh baguette bread with sufficient garlic butter spread was a great supplement to the dinner.
Coming up next, a hit with all 4 diners, including myself who aren’t a mushroom fan, Portobello Fries ($8.80). Light batter coated round the stripe of “meaty” fresh portobello.
I am a big fan of fried cheese however I didn’t enjoy the Fried Mozzarella ($6.80). The cheese was a little too stuff and stiff.
Our last appetizer for the night was the Fried Calamari ($8.80). Light and thin batter wrapped round the squid however some of the pieces were a little too chewy.
At Pastaria Abate, they offer a variety of fresh handmade pasta such as Tagliatelle, Linguine, Penne and many more. There are 3 types of sauces; White, Red and Cream Sauce. With such option, diners could mix and match per their preference.
As strangely as it maybe, we ordered only a pasta dish, Gnocchi With Mixed Seafood White Sauce ($14.80). The gnocchi was soft with hardly any chewiness. The white sauce was light and there was a good mixed of frozen seafood.
Since we were at an Italian Restaurant, hence we did not want to give the Tiramisu ($6.80) a miss. The cheese was rather heavy though there was a good amount of sponge cake and coffee flavour within the layer. A generous amount of chocolate dusting covered the top surface with excess on the plate.
Lemon Meringue has a thin crumbly tart base and a very sourish lemon curd that will send your a grimace face. The sweet meringue didn’t manage to lower too much of the sourness.
NAHMJ Verdict
Personally, I would go for only the Appetizers and the Pastas at Pastaria Abate since I have yet to try the Mains will leave it for the next trip. I would certainly give the dessert a miss at my next trip.
