It has been a year since we visited Barashi Tei. This round, the purpose of our Barashi Tei Revisit was to try out their new dishes and to check out how they fare after a year, if at least their standard maintain.
At NAHMJ, we notice nothing has changed from a year ago. The different was business was brisk. As the night falls and creeps towards mid-night, the crowds strolled in continuously.
Barashi Tei Revisit
The first new item we are about to introduce is the Chawanmushi. Diners could choose the original or with either toppings, Uni, Sea Urchin ($9.80) or Ikura, Salmon role ($6.80). If you are not a fan of the strong pungent seafood flavour, avoid those with toppings but go for the original.
Next is the Foe Gras Sushi ($15.80 for 2 pieces). The teriyaki taste-alike sauce complemented the foe gras and sushi rice perfectly. It was heavenly. Go for it especially for those who love their Foe Gras. It didn’t disappoint.
If you are a Mentaiko fan like myself, Unagi Salmon Mentai Maki ($14.80) is the must order.
Sashimi lovers do order the Chirashi Don ($26.80). We were “wowed” by the thickness of every slice.
Alternatively, opt for the equally delicious succulent Wagyu Beef Don ($38.80). Even the non-beef lover enjoyed this dish.
Both the Don come with a miso soup and fruit.
If you find having only Mains without side boring, a good choice is the Ebi Mentaiyaki ($15.80 for 2 pieces). The prawns were cooked in 2 flavours. One with Mentaiko and the with cheese. Personally, I prefer the former as I am a fan of Mentaiko dishes.
Otherwise, opt for the Soft Shell Crab ($12.80), a crowd favourite, anytime, anywhere. A pity, the batter wasn’t crispy enough.
Barashi Tei offers about 8 flavours of ice cream ($4.80 single scoop, except Pistachio at $5.80) with an option of having a quarter or whole waffle. Dessert isn’t fantastic after all Barashi Tei isn’t a place specialised in dessert. However, if you really need to ease your sweet tooth, order only the ice cream.
