Toby’s The Dessert Asylum has its roots at Marine Parade. For those who stay in the vicinity would have great memories of this family oriented-cafe being one that served gigantic portion and toothsome desserts with their dessert menu as huge as their Mains. It is quite an extreme that from the East, they shifted to the West of Singapore, along Boon Lay Way. Now situated at TradeHub21, in between Clementi and Jurong MRT station. The cafe is below the MRT track and facade isn’t obvious to the view, hence most won’t notice even when in the vicinity.
This cafe has a bright sunshine yellow facade offering both Al Fresco dinning and indoor with air-conditioning. These 2 areas are quite a contrast. Interior is mainly white with some black and red seats.
Since they cater to the family, beside the regular menu, there is a kids menu too. One good news, kids get to eat for free when they join as Toby’s The Dessert Asylum members. Check them out to find out more.
Kicked off with some interesting and uplifting drinks. First is our ultimate favourite among the 3 drinks we tried, the Hulk-A-Mania ($5.90) consists of Green apple and fresh lime juice plus sour plum. Next is the Strawberry Spider ($6.90) comprises Strawberry Ice Cream and Soda. Lastly was the Coffee Chendol ($7.90). A pity in this drink there isn’t coconut milk as such, we felt it was a sweetened Coffee with Gula Melaka.
We tried a fifth of the available Starter. First, something unusual, instead of having Popcorn chicken, here is the Popcorn Shrimps ($9.90). Dipping into the Wasabi mayo elevated the flavours.
Next is the popular Spicy Hot Wings ($8.90). Crispy wings with homemade hot sauce on the exterior is a great choice for the spicy lovers.
I was surprised to find myself enjoying the Battered Button Mushroom ($6.50). Fresh Button Mushroom coated in light batter and the key ingredient was the chilli dusting.
Apple Chicken Sandwich ($13.50) was our first Main. We love the Focaccia Bread. Between the layers were dice green apples and chicken mixed in mayo. Overall, it was quite messy to eat this huge chunk. And I find the amount of chicken too little.
Prawns & Mussels Tagliatelle ($17.90) was with white wine sauce however, I didn’t savour the much of the white wine. All the ingredients tasted in its natural flavour.
We find the Stewed Pork Pizza ($15.90) innovative. The taste of the pork is similar to the Chinese Braised Pork. If you like this ingredients, alternatively, you could opt for it in baked rice or sandwich.
By now, we were to our brim, but we still wanted our dessert. We turned to the highly sourish dessert that indeed, Brain Freeze ($11.90) us out. A layer of lemon sorbet with vanilla ice cream beneath it, is great for those who love sourish dessert. We love it, as it aid digestion after our heavy meal.
As all cakes were baked in-house, we felt that’s a good reason for us to order one to try. We chose Dark Knight ($10.50), a black forest cake with a scoop of chocolate ice cream. We thought the cake was good, however, we prefer the chocolate to be bittersweet.
NAHMJ Verdict
Toby’s The Dessert Asylum is a great cafe in the West of Singapore for the everyone since its portion is huge. NAHMJ would recommend them particularly for family with kids.
