BAKALAKI Greek Taverna, A Rare Greek Restaurant With Mediterranean Ambience – Tiong Bahru, Singapore

Whenever the word Greek is mentioned, inevitably, we will always think of the white building with blue domes churches in Oria, Santorini that face the blue waters. What about food? Greek cuisine is a rare find in Singapore, though we see that more are coming into the scene. We visited Ergon a few months ago. Now we visit BAKALAKI Greek Taverna in Tiong Bahru.

Before we arrived at the door-step, we caught glimpse of the gorgeous veranda seating area. With warm colours and wooden brown and white furniture offering a home-like ambience in a Mediterranean interior design. The huge indoor area is even more mesmerizing. I am sure some will exclaim a good spot for ootd. Due to the size, it is certainly a great restaurant for hosting large groups of diner.

I am not well-versed in Greek Food; neither am I in Middle Eastern Cuisine. Hence, I find them rather similiar at least in offering. And it isn’t a surprise if they do since they are next to each other. Since Greek Food is a form of Mediterranean Style, most would associate with Olive Oil. Other food that would strike us are the Greek Yoghurt, Grilled Meat and Fresh Seafood. With that, let’s take a look what did we at NAHMJ try at BAKALAKI Greek Taverna.

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna, A Rare Greek Restaurant With Mediterranean Ambience - Complimentary Bread

Since we felt obliged to try the Pita bread ($2.90) in Greek Restaurant, we chose 2 spreads, thinking that it would be small, but we were wrong. One is good to feed 2 persons. First was the refreshing Tzatziki ($14.90) consists of Greek yogurt and mixed with cucumber, garlic & Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This was light in flavour.

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna, A Rare Greek Restaurant With Mediterranean Ambience - Taramosalata ($15.90)

Next was the unfamilar Taramosalata ($15.90). In it are white cod roe mixed with bread crumbs & lemon juice topped with pickled wild Cretan Kritamos. The flavour of this spread was savoury and bold.

Among the 2 spread, we love the latter since both the diners belong to the heavy palate category.

The Pita Bread, a round pocket bread which is key, served at BAKALAKI Greek Taverna was thin and lightly savoury and chewy. Personally, I thought I would prefer it thick so that more bread-like texture was present.

We skip the Salates (Salad) and Sto Fourno (Roast) but focus on Kreatika Sharas (Grills) and the Psaria & Thalassina Sharas (Seafood) which we got an item each. First was the Kalamaki merida, Beef ($25.90), beef skewers sat on thicker pita bread and accompanied with addictive chunky fries. Though we requested for medium but it was almost fully cooked. Nevertheless, the consolation was the meat remained tender.

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna, A Rare Greek Restaurant With Mediterranean Ambience - Xifias ($33.90)

The highly recommended item under the seafood was Hta podi ($32.90), octupus, but we prefer fish hence we chose Xifias ($33.90), swordfish. The other 2 choices of fish were Seabram and Sea Bass. The appearance of the cube looked alarming over-cooked but to my surprise, it wasn’t. The fish retained moisture, however the characteristics of the fish is slightly tougher.

Both the grills were minimally marinated with salt and pepper allowing the natural sweetness of the ingredients to manifest. Drizzle tangy lemon juice for some zest.

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna, A Rare Greek Restaurant With Mediterranean Ambience - Baklava ($14.90)

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna, A Rare Greek Restaurant With Mediterranean Ambience - Giaourti ($12.90)

Finally time for dessert. A total of 5 desserts are found on the menu of BAKALAKI Greek Taverna. We tried 2 of them, first being the Baklava ($14.90), a famous dessert that are available in the Middle East Restaurant too. Each recipe has its variant, some use groundnuts while others use pistachio. I think this one comprises walnut and pistachio with lots of honey as such it was too saccharine for our palate. We love the Giaourti ($12.90), Greek Yogurt with Greek Honey. The creamy and very lightly sour yogurt was a perfect pairing with the greek honey with floral hint.
