Irresistible Savings At The Inaugural Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017

The popular Singapore Restaurant Month is back again! But this year, the month long event will be extended into a three-month Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017 (SRF). Presented by the Restaurant Association of Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board STB with DBS as the Official Card Partner, this inaugural festival will run from 1 July to 30 September 2017.

For this year’s Singapore Restaurant Festival, RAS has rounded up more than 50 participating restaurant brands to bring us a vast variety of Chinese, Western, Middle-Eastern, Fusion, Italian, Korean, Japanese and Indian cuisines. Among them, we can find both veterans in the local food scene (for eg. NG AH SIO Bak Kut Teh, Omar Shariff Authentic Indian Cuisines, etc) and newcomers (for eg. Joo Bar, EIGHT Korean BBQ, etc). In line with this year’s theme ‘Flavours of Singapore’, each of the 57 participating restaurants will feature a locally inspired dish.

In addition, enjoy promotions and irresistible savings (via the SRF Dining Voucher Set) at all SRF participating restaurants with your DBS/POSB cards. The SRF Dining Voucher Set (worth S$100 in denominations of $25) is available at a special price of S$70. For more information, visit DBS.

Highlights At The Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017

At NAHMJ, we visited 3 of the 57 restaurants that are taking part in the Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017. Read on to find out what we recommend.

First stop of the SRF Media Food Trail brought us to Umi + Vino Seafood Wine Bar in Emporium Shokuhin. Here, we tried their house special Hot Mediterranean Chorizo Olive Seafood Platter and a locally inspired Trio of Asian Sliders.

The Hot Mediterranean Chorizo Olive Seafood Platter (S$98++) tasted as delicious as it looked with a sea of fresh goodies including one whole live French crab, 1/2 lobster, prawns, mussels, clams, chorizo and olives in a light seafood broth. Oishii!

Irresistable Savings At The Inaugural Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017 - Umi + Vino Trio of Asian Sliders (S$18++)

Compared to the previous dish, the Trio of Asian Sliders (S$18++) did not look as exciting. But it was actually one under-rated dish. Expect to savor soft and warm Chinese buns with roasted pork, braised beef and chilli crab sauce. I especially like that the chilli crab sauce was served separately so that the bun did not turn soggy from the sauce. And I enjoyed all three buns.

Our second stop was at Fremantle Seafood Market, a riverside alfresco restaurant. Here, we had their Cereal Tiger Prawns and Singapore Chilli Crab. Although both are local dishes, the Singapore Chilli Crab is Fremantle’s participating dish.

When it comes to cereal prawns, I like the fried cereal more than the prawn. So with the Cereal Tiger Prawns (S$45++), I greedily stuffed a huge scoop of cereal into my mouth before eating the prawn. What a mistake!! Because the cereal was way too salty. The prawn itself gets a thumbs up since it was flavorful and infused with an aromatic cereal fragrance but as a cereal prawn, I was disappointed.

The Singapore Chilli Crab (S$18++/100g) fared better for me. Though this was not as salty as the cereal prawn, it was still on the saltier side. Personally I prefer a spicier and less salty chilli crab sauce. However, because the sauce was not too sweet and the Sri Lankan Mud Crab was fresh, it still found fans among our group of diners.

We ended the night at MUSEO, which offers a beautiful view of the Quayside Isle. Here, we were served cups of Crispy Octopus (SRF participating dish) and Soft Shell Chilli Crab.

Irresistable Savings At The Inaugural Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017 - MUSEO Crispy Octopus (S$13++)

I was pretty in love with the salted egg yolk Crispy Octopus (S$13++) as I found its flavor perfectly balanced. It was a pity that the octopus was slightly chewy thus demanded quite a workout from my jaws. Nevertheless, I endured all that exercise to finish the whole cup of fried octopus since I really enjoyed the salted egg yolk sauce.

By the way, if you are a fan of salted egg yolk dishes, you will be thrilled to know that a ‘Salted Egg Shiok’ campaign is also part of the SRF. From July to December 2017, refer to www.saltedeggshiok.com to access a Singapore Salted Egg Dishes map or vote for your favorite salted egg dish. Or join in the ‘shiok-o-meter’ by hashtagging #saltedeggshiok on Instagram with a salted egg dish post to win prizes.

Irresistable Savings At The Inaugural Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017 - MUSEO Soft Shell Chilli Crab (S$14++)

MUSEO’s Soft Shell Chilli Crab (S$14++) adds an interesting twist to the soft shell crab by adding a slightly spicy and savory chilli crab sauce. Overall, it is a nice dish that captured the hearts of my fellow diners. While I enjoyed the crunchy soft shell crab that remained crispy with the sauce, I still prefer the Crispy Octopus over this.

NAHMJ Verdict

With the inaugural Singapore Restaurant Festival 2017, we have 3 months to explore 57 restaurants at 30% discount (buy S$100 vouchers at S$70) so don’t wait! Go out there and taste them all! Among the 3 restaurants that we tried, we were most impressed with the food at Umi+ Vino Seafood Wine Bar and would urge you to give them a try.
