Patbingsoo Korean Dining House at Plaza Singapura, One Stop Destination For South Korean Delights – Dhoby Ghaut, Singapore

There is no lack of option at Plaza Singapura such as Lok Kee, Let’s Meat Up and even Korean restaurant option is not limited to one. We introduced Seorae with their new menu previously. And if your are looking for affordable Korean food, with bingsoo and makgeolli all under one roof though rare, not extinct! One such eatery is the Patbingsoo Korean Dining House!

Korean eateries are pretty specialized; although we can find Korean snacks, food, bingsoo and makgeolli separately, it is harder to find them all together. Korean eateries also tend to serve family sizes so it is also more difficult to find pocket friendly ones.

For starters, we had their Fried Samgyeopsal (S$6.90++) and Korean Chicken Wings (S$11.90++). Fried Samgyeopsal is thinly sliced pork belly fried in batter.  Because the pork belly is thinly sliced, it is not as fatty as I expected! This crispy and addictive snack pairs very well with the accompanying honey mustard sauce. This is strongly recommended!

There are only two flavors of chicken wings at Patbingsoo so we ordered both. Like all classic Korean chicken wings, these deep fried wings are coated with sticky glaze. I preferred the Spicy Chicken Wings (S$11.90++) over the Honey Garlic Chicken Wings (S$11.90++) since I am a spice lover!

For mains, we shared their House Special Ramyeon (S$11.90++), Seafood Sundubu (S$13.90++), Dynamite Spam (S$11.90++) and Rolling Cheese Pork Ribs (S$38.90++).

The House Special Ramyeon (S$11.90++) is one of the best sellers at Patbingsoo. Priced reasonably, this is like the mini version of the Korean Army Stew. It is filled with instant noodles, spam, kimchi and seaweed in a delicious spicy soup. This is the ultimate comfort food, especially on a rainy day.

Next, we had the Seafood Sundubu Pasta (S$13.90++). This is a fusion dish that presents Italian pasta the Korean way. The usual tomato sauce is replaced with a spicy sundubu sauce then topped with squid, crispy fried tofu and an egg. This flavorful dish tastes good. However, the portion is big so do share this.

When I heard the name Dynamite Spam (S$11.90++), I was expecting spicy spam fries. But, this is actually spam and rice balls. Slices of spam are topped with a special house made sauce (gochujang and mayo) then served with seaweed rice balls. And right before serving, your server will torch the sauce to a sizzle! Although I was feeling a slight spam overload (since we just had ramyeon with spam), I enjoyed this dish as the rich gochujang and mayo is perfectly balanced by the subtly flavored rice balls.

Lastly, we had the signature Rolling Cheese Pork Ribs (S$38.90++). The pork ribs are available in both spicy and non spicy marination. This dish is served in a cast iron platter where 4 ribs are seated on a bed of cheddar and mozzarella cheese. On the side, there are fries, chips, corn, pineapple and mayonnaise.

Although this is the priciest dish in the menu, Patbingsoo gives you more bang for your buck by injecting some showmanship. Watch as your server melts the cheese mixture using their exclusive ‘slapping’ technique that will make the cheese soft and stringy enough to be rolled around each individual pork rib. Now, savor each bite of your pork rib with delicious warm cheese!

The bingsoo here are cutely named after the metro stations (Korean train stations) in Seoul. We jumped on a train to Sinsa (Patbingsoo) and Incheon (Bingsoo)!

Cut using a special equipment to retain’s the rock melon’s dome shape, the Sinsa Patbingsoo (S$14.90++) is very photogenic. Inside the sweet and crunchy rock melon, you will find cornflakes, nata de coco, red beans and vanilla ice cream. As there are lots of melon in this bingsoo, this will make a healthier dessert choice. I really like this.

For those who prefer a more unique bingsoo, the Incheon Bingsoo (S$11.90++) is worth a try. Flavored with coffee and rum then topped with cream and vanilla ice cream, this tiramisu dessert is a sinful indulgence. It tastes pretty good but I will urge you to share (the calories)!

Patbingsoo Korean Dining House at Plaza Singapura, One Stop Destination For South Korean Delights at Dhoby Ghaut, Singapore - Soju and Makkoli (S$11.90++)

We dined here during lunch, but could not resist having a round of drinks since Patbingsoo serves one of the cheapest makgeolli (makkoli) you can find in restaurants! We tried the Mango Makkoli (S$11.90++) and Lychee Makkoli (S$11.90++). The Lychee Makkoli fared slightly better for me. But neither impressed me. I supposed this is expected given the price. If you are trying for the first time, this should do fine. Seasoned makgeolli drinkers should look elsewhere.

Other than makgeolli, we also had a go at their flavored soju, Grape Yoghurt Soju (S$11.90++) and Passion Fruit Yoghurt Soju (S$11.90++). The more popular flavor was the passion fruit yoghurt soju. Compared to other soju, these are sweeter and less alcoholic. I think young adults who are just starting to explore a little alcohol may like this. But personally, I don’t like this.

NAHMJ Verdict

I will definitely visit again when I am having Korean food or bingsoo cravings. If I want makgeolli or soju, I will look elsewhere.
