The Ranch Serving Comfort Western Food Right Beside Aljunied MRT Station - Facade

The Ranch Cafe Serving Comfort Western Food – Geylang, Singapore

I have never heard of The Ranch even though it existed for 7 years, until a friend suggested this place. Probably, it is due to the location. Though it is very accessible since it is right next to Aljunied MRT Station, it is in Geylang area which I hardly frequent even though there are many good food around the vicinity. Just to name that surrounds The Ranch are Chong Qing Grilled Fish, Big Moustache BBQ Skewers and Dai Pai Dong Restaurant which are mainly Chinese food.

From the name to the facade to the interior, it gave off the cowboy vibes. As such I tend to associate The Ranch with Western Food and a drinking hole. And indeed they are serving these. There are both indoor and Al Fresco dinning area. Diners were drinking and smoking at the outdoor area hence avoid the table near the door.

We started off with 3 Entrees and all these are Chef Recommendation by the way. First is the Smoked Duck ($12). Seriously, I can’t believe that this could be a Chef Recommendation when I was informed these were from Supplier. I was expecting the product smoked in-house when they denote a Chef Recommendation. Anyhow, the smoked duck was tender and moist, it seems the meat were cooked via sous-vide method.

Next was the Ranch S.M.S ($9.90). SMS refers to Shiitake Mushroom and Sausage. It was sautee with pepper and garlic. Overall, very much like a home-cooked dish.

Lastly was the Thai-Me Up ($9.90). These are crispy skinny wings with Tom Yum sauce. Half-wings resulted in less meaty and drier texture, ultimately, the overall texture was crispy and dry. The sauce was sourish. However lacking of the lemongrass, ginger and kaffir lime leaves fragrance.

Likewise, we ordered 3 Mains. First was the Pork Chop Spaghetti ($14.90). Again, the Spaghetti was similar to home-cooked style. Sautee with pepper and garlic. The Pork Chop by the side was tender, well marinated with a flavourful brown sauce.

The Ranch Serving Comfort Western Food Right Beside Aljunied MRT Station - Ranch King ($13.90)

Ranch King ($13.90) is a Beef Burger with a sunny side-up. Bread has a stale-like texture. The grounded beef was far too fine as such the patty has a marshy texture which didn’t appeal to all 4 diners. We were glad they accompanied the burgers with potato wedges instead of the usual fries.

The Ranch Serving Comfort Western Food Right Beside Aljunied MRT Station - Quesadilla ($12.90)

Among all the 3 Mains we order, I thought the Quesadilla ($12.90) was the best. Generous amount of cheese and tender chicken sandwiched between the wrap was tasty. Due to the limited type (only chicken and cheese), the overall flavour was flat. I would prefer it having some diced tomato and bell pepper to enhance the flavour.

Dessert offered at The Ranch was limited to Brownies, Hotcakes and Ice Cream in different permutation on the menu. Personally, I find the Brownies ($7.90) with vanilla ice cream to be the best dish of the night. Chocolaty brownies though as usual was sweet often paired well with Vanilla Ice Cream. I like the idea of cornflakes added to provide crunch.

The Ranch Serving Comfort Western Food Right Beside Aljunied MRT Station - Hotcake With I-scream ($5.90)

Hotcake With I-scream ($5.90) was the last dessert on the menu and we got an additional scoop of Ice Cream ($1.80). When I saw the Hotcake, I immediately exclaimed “Cute!”. Lightly chewy in the fluffy hotcake was the texture. And I was glad that maple syrup was available too. The Chocolate ice cream was chocolaty and lightly creamy. The other scoop that looked like the typical bubble gum ice cream was actually Salted Caramel. Beside the savoury and caramel flavour, it has an additional artifical flavouring taste which none of us enjoyed.

NAHMJ Verdict

Finally, NAHMJ thoughts about The Ranch … The Ranch served very much, in my term, local Western food but using more premium ingredients. They are somewhat home-style too. As such most of us would find comfort in those food.
