Lou You 老友 Re-branded With New Dishes Offering A Taste Of Malaysia At Bedok Mall – Bedok, Singapore

Lou You was originally known as Ipoh Lou You Beansprout Chicken; offered only the Ipoh Hor and Chicken Rice. With the re-branding, the team introduced various famous Malaysian dishes to the menu. Besides their current popular item, diners may find their favourite Malaysian dish at Lou You. Therefore, diners are spoilt for choices. The first outlet with the brand new menu is at Bedok Mall.

This was my first visit to the outlet at Bedok Mall hence I don’t know if there are any change to the interior after the re-branding. But I like the old-school interior.

Kick-off the meal with some sides for sharing. We started with three deep-fried items. First is the Penang Lor Bak 槟城卤肉 ($4.50), somewhat similar to our local Ngoh Hiang but it has chunky meat instead of minced ones. Next is the unassuming Handmade Fried Meat Ball 手打炸肉丸 ($4). I was surprised that it tasted as good as the former. In it were minced meat, it wasn’t the chewy processed meat ball that are over the supermarket freezer counter. Lastly was the Fried Dumpling; crispy with a large chunky of tasty fish paste.

Lou You 老友, Re-branded With New Dishes From Various Part Of Malaysia At Bedok Mall - Sarawak 'Bien Nuik' Soup 沙捞越扁肉汤 ($5.50)

Per the name, Sarawak ‘Bien Nuik’ Soup 沙捞越扁肉汤 ($5.50), one must have guessed the source. It has an acquired taste which maybe unacceptable to some. Though I love the taste, I didn’t relish on the texture, in particular the skin wrap.

Assam Laksa 亚参叻沙 ($7.50), originated from Penang, is another item that either you love it or you avoid it. Belong to the former, I find this bowl of sourish and spicy soup pretty authentic. It has a pungent sardine flavour which emit the moment it landed on the palate.

Next was the KL Mee Tai Mak 砂锅米苔目 ($7.50), similar to the KL Hokkien Mee. Black sauce fried Mee Tai Mak was submerged beneath the layer of fried shallot and chopped spring onions with the yolk exposed. Mixed them well and enjoy. The main flavour was from the black soya sauce comprises savoury taste with a lightly sweet hint.

Lou You 老友, Re-branded With New Dishes From Various Part Of Malaysia At Bedok Mall - Claypot Bak Kut Teh 砂锅肉骨茶 ($8.50)

Our last Main was the Claypot Bak Kut Teh 砂锅肉骨茶 ($8.50). In this bowl of pipping hot soup which has a distinct black sauce flavour that was dominated by the sweet taste, I didn’t favour that. However, it has lots of ingredients such as pork ribs, taupok and pig stomach.

NAHMJ Verdict

The re-branding of Lou You 老友 brought the taste of Malaysia to consumers in Singapore, allowing diners to enjoy their favourite Malaysian cuisine without having to travel.
