Some may have heard about the wonderful Lobster Porridge served at Wan He Lou 万合楼. If you have not, read on to find out more. Beside this mouth-watering dish, Wan He Lou New 5-Course Weekday Gourmet Lunch Set that was introduced recently is equally amazing. And the best part is that it is wallet-friendly.
Situated at a corner of a row of shophouse along Maude Road, though not very accessible by public transport, it is certainly worth a visit with family and friends, especially for its Lobster Porridge.
Interior has mainly round tables, big and small which is great for families. Wan He Lou has huge round tables for as many as 15 person, so great for large group who wanted to sit together.
Wan He Lou New 5-Course Weekday Gourmet Lunch Set
If you are looking for a place lunch that won’t break your bank and yet enjoy delish seafood, the GREAT NEWS is here. Wan He Lou New 5-Course Weekday Gourmet Lunch Set at $12.80++ is an irresistible choice.
In this new 5-course which is available only on weekday lunch set, the first course is the Appetiser of The Day, followed by Crispy Shrimp roll, a choice of main, drink and a dessert.
Three choices of main are available in the 5-course weekday gourmet set. First is the Seafood Pasta with Whole Abalone. I was surprise to find a western dish in a Chinese restaurant. Though they serve fusion food, I was expecting a dish that is slanted towards Chinese cuisine instead. With a 4 cm in length abalone in the dish, it is totally worthwhile. The dish is rather rich and creamy since it is a cream based dish. It is lacking of a seafood flavour in the cream. I thought it would be more interesting if they uses Mee Sua or Chinese handmade noodle for the dish.
Yet another western dish is the Langoustine Bee Hoon. The gravy isn’t as creamy as the former dish and I find the gravy more flavourful as I could savour the subtle seafood flavour in the gravy.
Lastly, is the Black Truffle Pork Chop Rice. The black truffle aroma is too light as such I find that pepper dominated the flavour.
Signature Dishes
If the lunch set doesn’t satisfy your tastebud, go for their signature dishes. First the Crispy Lotus With Salted Egg. This is as addictive as the Salted Egg Fish Skin and Potato Chips. Wan He Lou could bottle them and sell as snack.
Next is the appetising Pan-fried Kurobuta Pork. From the look, it doesn’t suggest deslish, but I was wrong. The taste was fanstastic. I had my second piece immediately after the first. As I chewed on the vinegar sourish flavour among the savoury pork, I relished.
The ultimate winner is the Lobster Porridge. The visit to Wan He Lou is not complete if diners did not order this highly-prized dish. Not only the essence is in the soup but the rice also absorbed them.
No meal is satisfying without ending it with a sweet note. Hence, the must have dessert which I will order is the Coconut Pudding With Ice Cream. The soft and lightly sweetened pudding jelly melts in the mouth and releases the coconut fragrance. I would eat it without the vanilla ice cream so the vanilla doesn’t mask any of coconut aroma.
NAHMJ Verdict
I will surely re-visit Wan He Lou with my family to enjoy the Lobster Porridge and Pan-fried Kurobuta Pork. And not forgetting the Wan He Lou New 5-Course Weekday Gourmet Lunch Set when I am having lunch on a weekday.
