I am sure by now most are familiar with Saveur, offering affordable French Food at several location. Saveur has recently launched a new dinning concept, The Masses, at Beach Road, taking over the space of defunct Black Tongue Bistro.
Look and feel and interior layout looks similar to Black Tongue Bistro. It certainly has the casual vibe and a little funky as neon light was placed on a wall.
The Masses termed their food as “Contemporary Happy Food”. They further explained its meaning. It is simply about using seasonal produce in simple recipe. Anyway, in my opinion, as long as it is delicious doesn’t result in heavy damages to my pocket, I am happy.
At a glance at the menu, there are lots of starters, only a handful of Mains and desserts. It isn’t a bad idea to order a few starter to fill the stomach. I tried Grilled Avocaodo ($8) and Organic Watercress Salad ($7.90). Both are equally amazing. In the former dish, beside the key ingredients per the name of the dish, it is topped with cream cheese and pickled Japanese Radish. I thought it was smart to add in crumble to create additional texture. There was also a yogurt sauce to enhance the flavour.
The second appetiser where pumpkin married with watercress is innovative. In this dish, crumble are also added. It has a yogurt sauce as salad dressing that complement the all ingredients.
C&C Pasta ($14.90) is the dish I highly recommend for the heavy palate. A rich and flavourful dish contributed mainly by the sauce. In it, there are generous amount of crabmeat and caviar. Though available as both starter and Main, I would glad go with Main.
Fish & Chips ($14.90) offered at The Masses is unique too as it is topped with Crabmeat Gremolata. The amount of gremolata wasn’t enough for the amount of fish. Without it, the fish was a little too bland as not much of seasoning was added to the fish.
Finally, dessert time. I love the Deep-Fried Camembert ($8.90). By the side of the fried cheese was a yogurt ice cream. Though I didn’t find them a good match when eaten together, better having them independently, I still love it as I am bias since I love both cheese and yogurt. The Gula Melaka Granola was there to provide an additional texture.
Valrhona (66%) Dark Chocolate Mousse ($10.90) was the other dessert I tried. Personally, chocolate mousse tasted like milk chocolate perhaps due to the lack of that bitterness. Though no sugar was added but when eaten together with the rice crisp, chocolate balls and chocolate ice cream.
For something other than usual coffee, tea and soft drink, The Masses offered Kombucha ($7.90), fermented fruit juice. It has a alcohol flavour but without the content. Personally, I like it.
Alternatively, the bar tender could customise a Mocktail or Cocktail for you too. I got my customised Mocktail, Bitter Lemon Lime.
NAHMJ Verdict
The combination of ingredients used at each dish at The Masses may look weird but it is certainly refreshing and delicious too. I will surely return.
What I would order? Definitely the C&C Pasta again, Organic Watercress Salad and Grilled Avocado too and end my meal with the Dee-Fried Camembert.
