Portico Prime New Menu for 2017, Better Than Our First Visit - Open Kitchen

Portico Prime New Menu for 2017, Better Than Our First Visit That Was 6 Months Ago – Dempsey, Singapore

My first visit to Portico Prime was last year November 2016 after their revamped. After 6 months, Portico Prime New Menu for 2017 was designed by their Executive Chef. In this new menu, they kept some of the dishes but added new one too.

Retaining some dishes from the previous dishes on Portico Prime New Menu for 2017 such as Pan-Seared Foie Gras, Live Scotland Blue-Lipped Mussels and Chilled Truffle-Scented Angel Hair Pasta. I was glad as these were my favourite dishes.

Starters

Two of the highlights for starters were Tuna Tataki ($20) and Grilled Portobello Mushroom ($15).

Mostly felt that the Tuna Tataki was a little too bland. On the contrary, I thought in this manner, one could savour the freshness and sweetness of the fish instead. And many criticised the pickled though most agreed that the wasabi mayonnaise augmented the Tuna. Hence, I like to think that this highly controversy is dependent on one’s preference.

Grilled Portobello Mushroom won hands down. All diners at the table adored this dish even though it was vegetarian. I am not a mushroom fan however, me too was mesmerized by the rich flavourful and creaminess.

Soup

I am not a fan of soup especially the cream kind as these filled my stomach easily. When I spotted the soup Semi-dried Tomato Consomme ($18), in my mind was ‘Oh No, Tomato?’. If you read my post frequently, you would know I avoid Tomato as much as I can. Despite so many dislike elements present, I still went ahead to try. And conversely, I like this soup. Perhaps due to dried tomato used. Somehow, this is the kind of tomato I like. The sweetness of the smoked salmon coupled with the semi-dried tomato perfectly. Thumbs up from all diners.

Mains

First and foremost, the Lamb Shank Navarin Style ($36). The most noticeable element of the dish was the size, huge. We thought it was absolutely value for money. This stewed lamb with orange infused roasted celeriac-flavoured melted in the mouth is a dish either you hate it or love it mainly due to the characteristics of lamb flavour. I belong to the latter group, loving it. The flavour was absorbed and mingled well with the lamb meat.

Followed by the Five Spice Sous Vide Duck Breast ($36) which was highly accepted by most. This duck with Asian twist as it uses Five Spice, a common ingredient in Chinese-cooking. The tender meat maintained the moisture through the sous vide cooking method. The bright orange-yellow coloured pumpkin puree complemented the duck meat too.

Lastly was the Mangalica Pork Neck ($48). I am not a fan of high fat content meat which this was the case. The chewy pork neck, a trait of the Mangalica Pork, is not also not a texture found favour in some diners too, hence it is a matter of choice. Overall, I thought it was a well executed dish.

Dessert

Should you be like me who can’t decide on what dessert to order, Why Not Have It All ($24). On this platter is 5 desserts in sample size. First the Deconstructed Black Forest, Red Velvet Cake, Matcha Adzuki Beans, White Chocolate Blondies and Portico Homemaed Ice Cream (Lychee, Vanilla and Mixed Berries).

Among all the selection, Matcha Adzuki Beans was the crowd-pleaser as the matcha flavour was strong and smooth, while the red velvet cake was the least favourite as the texture was far too dense for most of us to appreciate especially after the Mains.  It was a great idea to add in the ultra sour Mixed Berries sobert as a palate cleanser for each dessert.

Once you decided which is your favourite, at next visit, diners might want to order the full portion, such as Matcha Adzuki Beans ($16)

NAHMJ Verdict

Personally, I thought well of Portico Prime New Menu For 2017. Using new unfamiliar premium ingredients at a very reasonable pricing is the main selling point of Portico Prime. I welcome this strategy.
