Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine At VivoCity – HabourFront, Singapore

Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine has been at the same unit at VivoCity for as long as VivoCity exist, but till today, many still did not notice their presence, as they are at a far end of the mall where most doesn’t reach. Even though, if they do, I am sure most wouldn’t notice since somehow Peranakan food doesn’t appeal as much compared to the many choices in VivoCity.

The restaurant underwent some revamp and now it looks modern with some traditional elements. The new look is refreshing.

I am exposed to the dishes since my maternal grandparents are peranakan and I do enjoy them. Personally, I find them very similiar to Chinese food except that they tend to use more herbs & spices and coconut milk too. As such, some may argue that they are more identical to Malay food which isn’t wrong. I would term them as hybrid.

First, we have a soup, Lemak Puteh ($12). This soup has a lightly coconut fragrance as coconut milk was added to the broth. The greens are sweet potato leaf and sweet potato and prawns are also added to the soup.

Nyonya Chap Chye ($12) is a common and yet popular dish at Peranakan restaurants and home too. This is hardly missing on the table whenever we visit the Peranakan restaurants.

Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine At VivoCity - Nyonya Platter ($48)

For those who loves varieties and have a number of diners at the same time, Nyonya Platter ($48) is a good choice since in it are Ngo Hiang, Plum Sauce Chicken, Otak Otak, Assam Prawn, Squid and Cold Salad. I didn’t manage to try all except the squid as the greedy and hungry colleagues of mine grub them down before I got my share. Lol!! If you are wondering who the hunger “ghosts” are. Hint: They are in the photo above.

Next are all the meat and seafood. First, Ayam Buah Keluah ($15). This is as common and as popular as the Chap Chye dish. Not sure if coconut milk was added but somehow, I find it too lemak, I mean too rich in coconut milk and it is lacking in Buah Kelauh flavour.

Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine At VivoCity - Crispy Chicken ($12)

Crispy Chicken ($12) is absolutely mediocre. It is simply deep fried chicken meat. There are quite some breast meat on the plate. Unless there are some picky or fussy eater who dislike Peranakan food, I highly discourage ordering this dish.

Since we got an additional Assam Prawn ($18) on its own, I got to try it. Prawn was fresh with lightly assam flavour. A pity there isn’t a good punch of Assam fragrance.

Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine At VivoCity - Sambal Pomfret ($20)

Next is the Sambal Pomfret ($20). The fish was deep fried before it was loaded with sambal sauce. Amount of sauce may look intimidating but it isn’t as spicy as it looks. So it should be fine for most. In addition, the pungent sambal fragrance is missing.

Lastly is the Nyonya Crayfish ($28) before desserts. The fresh poached crayfish was covered in rich gravy that complemented the crustacean. Hence expect the dish to be dominated by the sweetish and lightly spiced gravy.

Total of 4 desserts are on the menu. We ordered only 2 of them, a hot and a cold. First the hot is the Puloh Hitam ($4.80). This is hardly sweetened. In fact, a few diners asked for syrup to sweetened it. I thought it was acceptable, though I don’t mind it sweeter.

Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine At VivoCity - Sago Gula Melaka ($4.80)

On the contrary to the hot dessert, Sago Gula Melaka ($4.80) is pretty sweet due to the gula melaka.

NAHMJ Verdict

This wasn’t my first time dinning at Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine Restaurant. I felt there was an improvement in their standard as compared to my past visit. Overall, food whipped at Nyonya & Baba Peranakan Cuisine is very much akin to home-cooked dishes and I think there are still room for improvement for most of their dishes.
