I have visited Founder Bak Kut Teh when they first started off their venture at Hotel Boss a year ago. And after a year of success, the outlet at Hotel Boss innovates, as such developed new dishes on their menu. Hence this Founder Bak Kut Teh Re-visit is with the intention of trying out their new dishes.
The interior remains very much like when they first started with round table at one side while the other with the regular rectangular dinning tables. The purpose of round table is to promote family dinning among the Chinese family. Since it is very much the Chinese tradition to do so. In addition, I do see that they started to solidify their branding with more of their logo printed throughout the space.
Menu still remains as one-page which I like, easy for glancing through and decide.
Founder Bak Kut Teh Re-visit
At all Bak Kut Teh visit, we surely can’t miss the star item out which is Bak Kut Teh. The 4 types of pork ribs were still offered. We got the Premium Ribs ($11.80) and Founder Bak Kut Teh ($9.80).
The meat on the ribs are tougher. It isn’t the fork-tender kind. Founder prefers to offer consumer such texture of meat. The soup isn’t the extra peppery till once you drink, it triggers a sneeze and clear your sinuses.
There are a total of 5 new dishes. A pity 2 of them were not available on the evening we visited; the Fried Beancurd 黄金豆腐干 ($5.80) and Braised Beancurd 卤豆腐干 ($1.80 / $3.80).
Steam Minced Meat 蒸肉饼 ($6.80) is the first new dish we tried. I like the idea of chestnut pieces added into the patty to provide a crunch. Perhaps mixing in some chopped garlic would be a good idead to elevate the fragrance.
If you are one who don’t like the pungent unique flavour of Cod, this Steamed Cod Fish 清蒸鳕鱼 ($18.80) is very much for you. As the dark sauce masked the flavour, the result is a smooth fish texture.
Trio Steam Egg ($5.80) has a pretty chewy and tougher texture. It is akin to the fish cake. The Century Egg and Salted Egg bites weren’t well distributed as such you don’t get to savour all the 3 kinds of egg in a mouth.
There are many more dishes that are on the menu. At this Founder Bak Kut Teh revisit, certainly, I would love to try other dishes that we have yet to try but we couldn’t resist the charm of some of their signature dishes like the Braised Pig’s Intestine 卤粉肠 ($8.80/$11.80), Tau Pok 豆腐干 ($1.80/3.80) and Salted Vegetables ($3.80/$5.80).
One of the popular dish on Founder’s menu that I did not manage to try the last round was the Pig’s Trotter ($9.80/$12.80). Using the same braised sauce as the Pig’s Intestine, as such expect is to be lightly sweetened. And per Founder method, they don’t braised it till it melts in the mouth.
Finally, the Crispy Prawn Roll ($5.80/$10.80) which personally I find that it is the best dish at Founder Bak Kut Teh. Quite some crunchy water chestnut are in there and this is the only pure savoury dish, that we found here.
At this Founder Bak Kut Teh revisit, we find the standard is pretty consistent as our first and we noticed that they did not increase their prices. In addition, they serve dishes that are generally geared towards the sweet end.
For the new dishes, as it is mainly dark sauce based, after a while, I felt immune and loses the interest and I am not sure what I am eating. Maybe it is good not to overly use the dark sauce.
