Prodigal Roaster At Ang Mo Kio Ave 9 – Ang Mo Kio, Singapore

It is heartwarming to see cafe popping up at the older housing estate. And Prodigal Roaster is one of them. Owner Glen decided to start his own roaster cum cafe at Ang Mo Kio where he grew up at.

When I saw the word Prodigal, I am reminded of the parable of The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). This set me curious of how the name dervied. Hence, I asked this very question to chatty Glenn. He was inspired by the mentioned parable whereby the Father in the parable was extremely generous and forgiving. He wanted his cafe to do some good and give back great coffee to the community in Ang Mo Kio.

Interior of the cafe was sleek and modern, nothing fanciful or hip about. There isn’t much seats around and in fact, it can get squeezy when the cafe is full.

Menu at Prodigal Roasters is currently kept simple with the main stream espresso based coffee with or without milk. Additionally, it is worth to highlight that all the beans are roasted with love by Glen. Alternatively, tea is also available. They are planning to introduce Cold Brew and Soda drinks soon.

At Prodigal Roaster, they serve single origin for the espresso based coffee which I personally preferred. They intend to serve 2 beans each time later when the operation of the cafe stablised; a chocolaty one that fit more to the Asian palate while the other is the fruity one in case customer wanted it.

Only desserts are available; one savoury pastry, the Quiche and the other sweet, Miso Cheese Tart ($4.50) were on the shelf of of my visit. And there was an interesting and unique Osmanthus Pine Nuts Cookies.

The Miso Cheese Tart ($4.50) was akin to baked cheesecake. Texture was dense but flavour was light. The lightly salted savoury miso complemented the cheese well. As such, it was easy to finish a slice with the coffee unknowningly.

NAHMJ Verdict

Prodigal Roaster serves more than decent coffee that are prepared with lots of love. We hope to see that they will flourish and get a bigger space to offer seats for cafe hopper to chillax in near future.
