The name of the this newly opened cafe, the.twenty.cavan, is also the address of this rustic looking hipster cafe. It seems like all hipster cafe are conjugating around Jalan Besar. This is proving that Birds of a feather flock together for cafe likewise.
I visited the cafe due to the many positive feedback I read online. As such anticipation builds up.
Interior design of the.twenty.cavan reminds me of the now defunct Rouse Cafe at Dunlop Street.
Menu of the.twenty.cavan features a series of fusion signature Mains with items such as Canton Roast Chicken ($16), Stir-fried Blueberry Lamb Chop ($20) and Beef Udon ($18).
Beef Udon ($18) though looks like a small bowl with chopstick, it was filling. Lemongrass marinated Australian beef was a little too bland for my liking. As they tried to tenderise the meat by I think smashing it as such the surface was too meshy. Using other tenderising method might be wiser. I didn’t savour much five spice flavour instead it was pure soya. Nonetheless, it was a pleasing bowl of Fusion noodle.
At the.twenty.cavan, dessert menu were Pumpkin Yam Puree ($8) and Lemon Pudding ($7). I went for the former since I adore the Teochew Yam puree. Hence I was eager to find out how this version is compared to the traditional rendition. I am not sure what is the brown powder that covered the top surface. I suspect it might be some nutmeg or spice powder. My first impression was yuck. Nothing close to familiar Teochew Yam puree. In fact, I would describe the taste as weird. But somehow, subsequently, perhaps I got used to the flavour and find it acceptable.
Fresh House Soda Lemon & Ginger ($7) was refreshing due to the lemon and punching ginger did spice it up. Other house soda option available were Mango Mint and Passion Fruit & Mint. Otherwise go for the Smoothie ($8) with avocado, berries of lychee flavour. Alternatively, Juice ($5), Coke ($3). Interestingly, no coffee is on the menu, only Cold Brew Tea ($5) and Hot Brew Tea ($5).
NAHMJ Verdict
I like fusion menu as always since usually there will be surprises. But the dish I tried at the.twenty.cavan was mediocre. Since competition is tough in that area, expectation was higher.
