For all the sweet tooths out there, good news, one more dessert cafe added to the cafe scene in Singapore. Now we have Sugar Lips at Orchard Gateway. Located above Somerset MRT station proved easy access to all.
As we approach Sugar Lips, we saw a striking facade with an unusual grey background and pokka dots. In addition, the pink neon signage was attention-captivating too.
The seats were partition into cubicle which provide lots of privacy and we love it. But the look was rather creepy, though colours were used to brighten the cafe, I feel as if I was in a Dracula castle.
On each table were a menu and 2 props prepared for diners to take some deliciously looking Sugar Lips photos to proudly showcasing on their Instagram accounts.
Now, let’s turn our attention from the ambience to the focus, the desserts. Desserts offered at Sugar Lips are largely Cakes and waffle. Diners will decide to have the Standard ($12.90) that is 1 dessert with 1 topping, Medium ($14.90) with 1 dessert and 2 toppings or Large ($16.90) that has 1 dessert and 3 toppings.
Other selections are gelato ($9.90 for 2 scoops) and some savoury bites such as Texas BBQ Chicken Pie ($10.90), Vegetarian Mushroom Pie ($10.90), Chicken Quesadillas ($11.90) and Beef Lasagna ($11.90).
We tried none of the waffle at this visit. Started with the more popular choice in the cafe Rainbow Fantasy Cake. I am not a fan of coloured food, when served, I was apprehensive about the taste. Furthermore, it looked overwhelming sweet to us. To our surprise, none of our concern was valid. It tasted better than it looked; fluffy smooth and lightly sweetened sponge cake. More importantly, cream layer were thin. A pity, the various colours doesn’t have different flavour to it.
Chocolate Seduction Truffle Cake ($16.90) was next we tried. It was a bittersweet sweet chocolate cake that was with good balance.
Lastly, about a dozen of toppings for diners to choose from. There are selections of Oreo Cookies, Chewy Brownies, marshmallow, ice cream, nuts, fruits and many more. We love the chewy brownies most.
Besides the espresso based coffee ($4.90 – $6.90), tea ($4.90 for hot tea, $5.90 for iced tea) and soft drinks ($5.90), 4 house specialty drinks are available. We tried the Pink Sunrise ($9.90) that is with pink guava flavour as base. The other 3 selections are Pineapple Mintdaze ($9.90), Over The Rainbow ($12.90) and Jungle Fruity Punch ($13.90)
NAHMJ Verdict
Serving artfully decorated dessert at Sugar Lips and most importanat it taste good. Though some may disagree about the plating and felt it more like doodling by a pre-school kid. Anyway … beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Choices might be boring, but if you are looking for the classic desserts, this is the place to turn to.
