Must Visit Jakarta Attractions - National Monument, Monas

 

The pillar of Monas stands at 137 meters tall. The stem symbolizes a rice pestle, while the cup symbolizes a rice barn. The flame was made of bronze medal which weight was 14.5 ton, and was plated with 35 kg gold.

Visitors could reach the top yard via elevator to enjoy the view of Jakarta. When it is on a clear-weather day, views as far as Salak Mountain at the south, the ocean at the north side, and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at the west can be spotted.

Fountain performance at Monas Park is available at every Saturday and Sunday, starting from 7 pm to 8 pm.

National Museum of Indonesia opposite one side of the MONAS park where visitors could consider to pop over as well. Better known as Elephant Museum due to the the Elephant sculpture. This is a gift presented to the museum by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Thailand who visited the museum in 1871.

This museum consist of more than 140,000 exhibits; ranging from archeological, ethnographically and geographic collection.

The Church of Our Lady of Assumption is the Cathedral of Jakarta parish. Catholicism in Indonesia was brought by Dutch.

Do note there is no English mass at the Cathedral, only in Bahasa Indonesia.

Must Visit Jakarta Attractions - Masjid Istiqlal

 

Continue with Istiqlal Mosque visit since it is opposite of Jakarta Cathedral. Masjid Istiqlal inagurated in 1978 is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. It was designed in 1954 by Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect from North Sumatra.

Non-Muslim visitors must be accompanied with a guide as not all areas are allowed to be entered such as the main hall.

 

 

Old Town Jakarta, Former Batavia

 

Among the must visit Jakarta attractions, Old Town Jakarta also known as Kota Tua is one other. It was the commercial centre established by the Dutch in the 16th century. The traces of history could still be seen today through the various museum and historical building that withstand the test of time.

This museum has a very comprehensive collection of puppet but most of the displays don’t have an English explanatory note. A great range of Indonesia puppet cum China, Vietnam, India, Cambodia and Europe are on display in this Wayang Museum too.

In addition, there are free wayang performances here on Sunday at 10am.

Housed in a colonial building constructed in 1805 that was used as the VOC administration office. It is overlooking the Taman Fatahillah square of old town. This historical building provides a good place to savour some delicacies, resting one’s feet and to people-watch at the square if you get to sit by the window.

To avoid disappointment, do make a reservation especially if you plan to dine there over the weekend.

The building of Museum of Fine Art And Ceramic is the old Court of Justice built by the Dutch in 1870. Showcasing the arts pieces and ceramics of the archipelago region of 19th and 20th century.

 

Kota Intan Bridge

Connecting East and West of Kali Besar.

 

This 17th century constructed wooden bridge during the time of Duta colonial.  It can be found northward of either Jalan Kali Besar Tim or Jalan Kali Besar Barat.

Museum of Bank Indonesia is one of the best museum in Jakarta due to the way the exhibits are displayed and it has enough English explanatory note. It is housed in the first headquarters of the Netherlands Indies gulden (De Javasche bank), the central bank of Dutch East Indies.

The museum provides a glimpse of how the Indonesian Rupiah started and evolved and how the monetary policies and payment system develop over time.

Sunda Kelapa Harbor is an important place to Indonesia economy since 5th century; trading spices by the Portuguese. Eventually Sunda Kelapa Harbour was ceased by the Dutch by force. Today, it is the harbour for inter-island traditional boats travel.

In Taman Mini, model of the houses from various Indonesian provinces around a lake was built on the 145 ha land. The park features the different islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Categorized into six areas; Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi, the Lesser Sunda Islands, Maluku and Papua.
