Though Punjab Grill was around The Shoppes At Marina Bay Sand for quite some time, I don’t know of its existence if it wasn’t for the invite to savour Punjab Grill Special Monsoon Menu. This menu is available from 15 July to 15 August 2016.
The interior of Punjab Grill has a touch of fine dinning restaurant with dimly lighting.
As the kitchen is covered with a glass panel instead, for those who enjoy the chef at work could have a bird eye view from their seats.
Punjab Grill Special Monsoon Menu
As I am not an Indian cuisine expert, I invited an Indian colleague who currently based in Calcutta, if I remember correctly, along to the dinner. On hindsight, it was really a wise choice since many terms the service crew mentioned was an alien to me. I am glad to have my colleague to explain in further details to me.
Starter And Appetizer
At Punjab Grill, during our visit, we got the Khakra. My Indian dinning partner pointed out that this is not a Punjab dish but a Gujarati special. The Khakra is pretty similar to Papadom. This is thiner. Three sauces were accompanied; Mint, Garlic Cream sauce and Mango Chutney.
Swiftly, the Dahi Bhalla followed. In English, the best word to describe is dumpling.
Anyway, it tastes like it was made of flour. The dumpling itself is bland, the flavour comes from the sauce.
Salad
Apple wood smoked salmon & Tempered quinoa salad ($18) was an extremely flavourful dish for a start. Lots of spice was added to the otherwise tasteless quinoa, topped with an equally tasty apple wood smoked salmon.
Alternate option on the Punjab Grill Special Monsoon Menu was the Trio warm sprout salad tossed with Bell pepper ($15).
Non Veg Appetizer
Over at the Non veg appetizer at Punjab Grill Special Monsoon Menu, there are 4 items. We savoured 3 out of the 4 dishes. The only grill we did not try was the Kashmiri chilli & aniseed flavored chicken Tikka.
The Pan grilled tiger prawn / spiked with tossed lemon Bread crumb ($45) uses fresh succulent big tigter prawn. A must order for seafood lovers. Next, the Mango chutney spiked sweet and sour lamb ribs was flavourful. The marinate immersed well into every area of the meat. A pity some were too tough. Lastly, the tangy Tandoori Kukud wings tamarind flavored is easily a crowd pleaser.
Chaat Bazaar
Before going into the Mains, we were served some finger food, the Monsson Assorted pakoda ($45). This dish is usually enjoyed as a snack. I thought it would be best to wash down with some beer.
The variety of fritters in the basket are brocoli, simla mirchi, cottage cheese, Artichoke and Green Aspagargus. The batter though thick was surprisingly light.
Main
I was glad to know that there are both veg and non veg mains option were available at the Punjab Grill Special Monsoon Menu.
Veg Main Course
Aloo gobi ki tehri Briyani ($34) is not a lightly flavoured dish even though it is a veg dish. The spice cooked with the rice accentuated the flavours. Personally, I won’t pick this as it lack of meat flavour.
Followed with the Tofu labbaddar ($34). The dominating flavour seems either beans or nuts. I maybe wrong. I didn’t enjoy this curry since it is a vegetable curry.
Non Veg Main Course
First was the curry the Smoked Tandoori duck simmered in kasmiri rogan Jus ($48) is my favourite among the 2.
This is a tomato based curry. A balance among the various flavours with no flavour masked or stood out. Since this curry is a meat dish, it is sweeter and more flavourful than vegetable curry.
Monsoon Hot Bread
Two types of bread together with a complimentary lentil curry was on the table.
First was the Masala ajwiani missi roti ($8), our preferred choice of bread. Next was the Pickled olives chillies paratha ($10). The texture was a little rough. I suppose due to the complex flavour of the latter, hence it didn’t go too well with the curry.
Dessert
Dinner at Punjab Grill ended with a sweet note. Amazing chocolaty mouse cake paired with the Raw Mango Ice Cream.
And the best part of the dessert; it was lightly sweet.
After all the rich flavoured food, Punjab Grill offered each guest the Bethel juice. This not only cleanse but also refreshes the palate. It tasted weird when the drink touches the tastebud. But once the drink was swallowed, a sweet scent immersed and lingered in the mouth.
NAHMJ Verdict
We were more than pleased with the Punjab Grill Special Monsoon Menu. This restaurant is also approved by my Indian dinning partner.
