Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Dim Sum (Steamed Sea Cucumber, Assorted Seafoods and Shrimp Roe Dumpling)

Yan Toh Heen Chinese Restaurant 欣圖軒 – Hotel Intercontinental Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui

Yan Toh Heen Restaurant 欣圖軒 is awarded 2-Michelin star in 2015, went up by 1 star from 2014. I am not one who will go after Michelin star restaurant but since Yan Toh Heen has many positive review, I thought I should visit it in my Oct 2015 trip to find out how exactly fare in my opinion.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Interior

Located at the Lower floor of Hotel Intercontinental, it is at the same level with the Avenue of the Stars, hence the view isn’t fantastic. You could still enjoy the skyline opposite the Victoria Harbour. The most prominent icon among the skyscrapers, is the “turtle”, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Candied Walnut

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Sauces

Interior is of typical Chinese restaurant setting with a modern design. And there were quite a number of comfy huge sofa seats at every corner. One interesting point at Yan Toh Heen was a total of 6 sauces served; 3 spicy and 3 non.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Wok-fried Turnip Cake and Air-dried Meat with Homemade XO Chili Sauce

We started off with the Wok-fried Turnip Cake and Air-dried Meat with Homemade XO Chili Sauce (XO 醬炒臘味蘿蔔糕). Texture of the turnip cake was soft and smooth but we felt the sauce was too lightly flavoured and did not bring the entire flavour to the maximum.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Steamed Sea Cucumber, Assorted Seafoods and Shrimp Roe Dumplings

Next was the exquisite wrapped Steamed Sea Cucumber, Assorted Seafoods and Shrimp Roe Dumplings (海 參 蝦 籽 蒸 粉 果). Lightly flavoured with natural sweetness of the seafood. But personally, I felt the dumpling skin was a little too thick for the amount of fillings.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Steamed Pork and Prawn Dumplings with Crabmeat Roe

The Steamed Pork and Prawn Dumplings with Crabmeat Roe (蟹皇蒸燒 賣), commonly known as Siu Mai, was excellent. Easily the best.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Steamed Prawn and Bamboo Shoot Dumplings

Since we have the Siu Mai, we wouldn’t want to miss out the Har Gao, Steamed Prawn and Bamboo Shoot Dumplings (晶 瑩 筍 尖 鮮 蝦 餃).

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Steamed Barbecued Pork Buns

Another ususal sight on Dim Sum menu, is the Steamed Barbecued Pork Buns (蜜汁叉燒 包). Soft, fluffy bun skin with good ratio of tasty Barbecued Pork as filling.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Steamed Seafood Dumpling in Soup with King Crab Leg and Bamboo Piths

The Steamed Seafood Dumpling in Soup with King Crab Leg and Bamboo Piths (長腳蟹竹笙灌湯餃) is a luxurious bowl of soup worth every cents. Soup was filled with seafood goodness and the ingredients in the dumpling was fresh and excellent.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Stewed Noodles Flavoured with Mushrooms

Stewed Noodles Flavoured with Mushrooms (撈 麵) was lightly flavoured. I didn’t enjoy the noodle as there were hint of alkaline after-taste. An after-taste which I dislike.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Chilled Mango Cream with Sago and Pomelo

As usual, before ending the meal, dssert is a must. We ordered a Chilled Mango Cream with Sago and Pomelo (楊 枝 甘 露) which is always a must at any Chinese Restaurant. It is a classic dessert. The Chilled Mango Cream with Sago and Pomelo at the restaurant is lightly sweetened and the mango flavour was also considerably light with cubes of mango dice added and generous pomelo topped onto it. It was served in a dramatic manner. I have a video below for all to view.

Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - Basil Dragon Pearl with Ginger Ice Cream

As I glanced through the dessert section of the menu, I spotted the unique Basil Dragon Pearl with Ginger Ice Cream (泰 國 龍 眼 珍 珠 伴 薑 味 雪 糕). I am not a ginger fan but I was in an adventurous mood. The ginger ice cream sat on a shallow bed of pudding and basil dragon pearl, topped with a sliced of frozen dried ginger. The ice cream was lightly ginger flavoured, well suited for me. And when eaten together with the sliced of ginger, it brought the ginger flavour to the fullest. Personally, I find this dessert was best enjoyed eating all the ingredients together.

NAHMJ Verdict

The food served at Yan Toh Heen were light in flavour, but nonetheless still considerably flavourful. One could savour the natural goodness of the fresh ingredients and the sauce complemented it. But for the heavy palate, they might not enjoy the food.

Lastly, I leave the video of the dessert presentation for your viewing.
