Chachawan - Facade

Chachawan Thai Restaurant – Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Chachawan is a Thai Restaurant located at Shueng Wan, helmed by Chef Adam Cliff, a protégé of the acclaimed Thai cuisine chef David Thompson was was awarded the “Best New Chef 2013”. It offers unique specific Thai food, Isaan. In short, it is offering dishes from a northeastern region of Thailand. At this region, sticky rice is staple. The well-known Papaya Salad originated from Isaan too. With meat marinated before grilling and fishes coated with generous layer of salad before placing over the fire.

The ambience and setting at Chachawan was very much bar-like. And it could get pretty noisy.

Chachawan - Menu

The largest portion on the menu was dedicated to Salad and a few seafood and meat were on the menu. Various rice and extra and a handful of sweets (desserts) were seen too.

Chachawan - Som Dtum Thai (Green Papaya Salad)

Since the Som Dtum Thai (Green Papaya Salad) is from the region, we wouldn’t want to savour the authentic dish prepared by Chachawan. Slightly sourish, sweet and pretty spicy.

Chachawan - Nahm Dtok Nuer (Spicy Grilled Wagyu Beef Salad)

Next was the Nahm Dtok Nuer (Spicy Grilled Wagyu Beef Salad). Tender, flavourful beef slices but was spicy.

Chachawan - Pla Mauk Yung (Grilled Squid Salad)

We have the Pla Mauk Yung (Grilled Squid Salad) too. Another spicy dish. Squid was extremely tender.

Chachawan - Gai Yung (Grilled Chicken Thigh)

Gai Yung (Grilled Chicken Thigh) came with a dip. Meat remained succulent after the grill.

Chachawan - Tap Tim Krawp (Red Ruby)
Chachawan –

Dessert is never hardly missed out on my dinning table. Among the 6 selections, Tap Tim Krawp (Red Ruby) was our choice. Lightly sweetened, flavourful coconut milk with crunchy red ruby. The pomegranate added a sourish tint. It could be quite sour.

Chachawan - Green Mango with Lemongrass and Chilli Salt

Complimentary Green Mango with Lemongrass and Chilli Salt were served at all tables after dinner. A slice of Green Mango each. It was interesting to have it with Lemongrass and chilli. It was our first time eating it in this manner and 3 diners like it, except 1 who didn’t dare to try.

NAHMJ Verdict

Among the 4 diners, 3 thumbs up with only 1 didn’t think highly of the food at Chachawan. I belong to the group who enjoyed the meal, except for the noisy and the dimly lit ambience that I didn’t appreciate.
