O'nya Sayang Peranankan - Interior

O’nya Sayang Peranakan Restaurant – Paya Lebar Square, Singapore (Closed)

O’nya Sayang a restaurant at Paya Lebar Square offerring one of our local cuisine, the Peranakan fare. Peranakan being an important culture here is lacking of marketing and awareness. Even among the tourist, it is not too well known. I often wonder why.

I am one who enjoy Peranakan cuisine but as it is usually like the Chinese cusine setting which make ordering for one difficult. Good news if you have the same challenge as me, O’nya Sayang offers lunch set. But since I managed to get my uncle and aunt to join me for lunch at O’nya Sayang, of course, I could order the ala carte dishes instead.

A seafood dish is a must for us as seafood lover. Between the Sambal Seafood and the Assam Seafood 酸辣海鲜 ‘亚叁’, it was a difficult choice, we chose the latter. In it consisting of prawn, squid and fish in a bowl of tamarind soup, we find it a little too sweet. We prefer it to be more sourish instead.

Sambal Kangkong 參峇空心菜 wasn’t spicy, lacking of the sambal chilli oomph.

Bakwan Kepeting Soup 特制肉圆汤 was bowl of comfort minced meatball soup.

Ngoh Hiang 五 香 was wrapped with a thinly spread layer of marinated minced meat in the tofu skin. I prefer the minced meat to be in a larger chunk instead. It tasted like the homemade version with crispy skin.

We couldn’t decide between the Bor Bor Cha Cha and the Durian Chendol. After some hard struggle, we went for Durian Chendol. It has very little Durian puree layered on top of the heap of shaved ice with abundant gula melaka poured over it. It reminded us of Durian Kueh which we don’t really enjoy.

Chendol Ice Cream was the sweetest among the 3.

Our fave among the 3 desserts we ordered is the Sago Gula Melaka Ice Cream. As it is the least sweet among the 3.

It was a pity that we didn’t order any of the classic Peranakan dishes such as the Ayam Pongteh or Ayam Buah Keluak or even the Chap Chye. And I would love to try the Bor Bor Cha Cha too.

NAHMJ Verdict

Food whipped by O’nya Sayang was rather home feel, comfort food. We enjoyed the food but felt there are still rooms for improvement.
