Catalunya - A view of the restaurant

Catalunya, Spanish Restaurant with a View – Collyer Quay, Singapore

I have been hearing lots of positive feedback about Catalunya from blog posts and even my friends. Hence I was curious to explore this seemingly fabulous Spanish restaurant. I decided to pop over for lunch on a weekday, with a companion of course.

Of all day, it rained heavily. To make it worse, there isn’t any cover walk from the Fullerton Bay Hotel. Sheltering with the only pathetic petite umbrella, we were drenched. The door was heavy and I was struggling with it, none of the 2 receptionist at the door step up to open the door for us. When we entered, they didn’t even offer us with servette or a napkin to dry ourselves. In short, I have a bad first impression.

Catalunya - From our seats

We were sat by the glass dome. The view on a sunny day would have been lovely. Instead, we saw a greyish sky with a spattered glass. Not too interesting a view on a wet day.

After we sat comfortably in our seat, I started using the napkin to dry myself, since I was still pretty wet all over. A sweet, lovely young lady, our service crew, was attentive to bring us a decent amount of servette for the same purpose. She compensated for the initial experience. Throughout, her service was warm and friendly too.

Catalunya - Executive Lunch Menu

3-course Executive Lunch Set ($38++) was served during lunch with 3 selection for each course. We simply chose 2 different dishes for each course.

Starter

A soup, a salad and a tapas were on the menu for the starter. We chose the salad and the tapas.

Catalunya - Greek Salad

Greek Salad was served as the salad on the day we dined at Catalunya. Dressing was sufficient, greens were fresh.

Catalunya - "Huevos Estrellados" with Mojama

“Huevos Estrellados” with Mojama was deep fried potato topped with a sunny side up and dried salted tuna. We enjoyed the fragrance aroma from the potato. It seems some herb were used to fried the potato.

Mains

For Mains, a selection of a pork, a fish and a pasta dish. While we were degusting our food, we saw many ordering the pork which we chose to pass. I kind of regretted the decision. It looked too good.

Catalunya - Pumpkin Gnocchi with Parmesan Sauce and Sauteed Mushroom

Pumpkin Gnocchi with Parmesan Sauce and Sauteed Mushroom. Usually Gnocchi were made of potato, these were made using pumpkin. We could savour the pumpkin sweetness in the soft Gnocchi. The Gnocchi was lacking of some chewiness.

Catalunya - Grilled Mackerel with Fennel Slaw and Piquillo Pepper Coulis

Grilled Mackerel with Fennel Slaw and Piquillo Pepper Coulis was our second Main. Slight fishiness exist in the fillet, but was masked by the pepper coulis and the slaw when was eaten together.

Desserts

Final course, the dessert, with a fruit, sorbet and a tiramisu as option.

Catalunya - Watermelon Sorbet

Watermelon Sorbet was refreshing sweet watermelon fruitiness. I was expecting a little sourish like the lemon to add some zest into the it, but there wasn’t.

Catalunya - Tiramisu

Tiramisu was a lovely plated dessert. Some might call it “deconstructed”. Anyhow … the presentation was attractive and scored equally high for its taste too.

Verdict

Maybe due to the many great reviews, expectation was high, and I was in full anticipation. As a result, personally, I feel that Catalunya need not meet the bar I set. Perhaps, their Tapas on the Ala Carte Menu would be a better choice. I shall try them next.
