Ugly Cake Shop, an online shop turned brick and mortar at Kallang Bahru from mid 2015 has many good review from their online days. As one with sweet tooth, I welcome the addition cake, pastries and dessert shop to the scene.

 

 

 

The cafe was extremely simple. Not much of a theme per se. It was furnished with few simple wooden tables and metal chair in either yellow or white colour.

Though it has a retail front, Ugly Cake Shop after all remains very much a bakery that take mainly orders for their whole cake.

 

 

 

Hence at the Ugly Cake Shop cafe, they offer mainly cup cakes with one or two options for slice cakes.

 

 

And of course the usual beverages such as Coffee, Tea and Chocolate Drinks.

 

 

Cake I tried … 

Since I am not a cup cake fan, as far as possible, I am not ordering the cup cakes. I spotted the Today’s Special which mentioned “Grilled Cake”. I thought it sounded unique.

 

 

Desmond, Grilled Cake with Orange Blossom Cream and Cherry Compote

 

 

When the plate of dessert was served to me, my instant thought was “Ugly”. True to its name. Not in a bad way. As for its taste, I can assure you that it was way better than its look. So don’t judge a book by its cover! The grilled cake has a slight crispy factor and was lightly sweetened. With the cherry compote which I believe might be too sourish for some added a layer of flavour to the dish. When eaten together with the Orange Blossom Cream would lower the sourish level. It was a pity that I could not savour the Orange fragrance as it was far too light. It was overwhelmed by the Cherry Compote.

 

 

Never failed, the cappuccino will be paired with my dessert. Ugly Cake Shop uses the beans from Illy.

 

 

Verdict

The cakes at the Ugly Cake Shop are like the design of its cafe; simple with no fanciful stuff added. Its cake are very much homemade styled. It reminded me of the cakes my Mom used to baked. To certain extends the cakes look “Ugly”, but it taste good. Lastly, I would very much like to see more unique varieties offer by Ugly Cake Shop.
