Uncle Ho Tuckshop, Vietnamese – Pasir Panjang Road, Singapore

Who would have thought Uncle Ho Tuckshop is a cafe selling Vietnamese food such as the renowned Pho. They claimed to be the first in Singapore to offer Hanoi’s Famous Bun Cha Specialty. Moreover at a location that are mainly industrial, Pasir Panjang Road.

Uncle Ho Tuckshop - Interior

Uncle Ho Tuckshop has a vast space with paintings neatly hung on the wall. Chairs are uniformly red with variation to the tables. There are some Vietnam ornaments such as the typical hats, Non La are used to decorate a corner. That helps to bring a piece of Vietnam to the ambience.

Hanoi Bun Cha

Hanoi Bun Cha was amazingly appetising. Before ordering, I felt pretty stuffed from breakfast but when I started, I finished without realising.

The bowl of clear soup with meat that accompanied the rice noodle was sourish sweet. The meat consist of thinly sliced well marinated grilled pork belly which isn’t awfully fatty and some minced meat ball which was flavourful and tasty. I wouldn’t mind having these in exchange of the sliced pork belly. It was too good to miss this dish.

Authentic Hanoi Pho

At Uncle Ho Tuckshop, the Hanoi styled Pho was prepared with four selections for Beef and one and only one for Chicken if you don’t eat beef.

The soup was flavourful with sweet beefy aroma. Lots of greens such as parsley and spring onions and a little of mint added into the bowl of Pho already, unlike the Southern counterpart where a bowl of greens with bean sprouts is served on a separate bowl or plate.

I could savour the sliced beef since it wasn’t as thin as a piece of paper. The ball was chewy and bouncy filled with beef fragrance.

Lastly the rice noodle was silky.

Banh Mi VietBaguette Sandwiches

Banh Mi Chicken & Pork Pate was about 25 cm long baguette, at a glance, it looked huge to me. I was pretty certain I won’t be able to finish it. But due to the spicy pickle in the sandwich, it was appetising and I could finish it.

The chicken & pork pate was briny but with the pickle and the greens, it balanced.

Side Kicks

If having only mains is rather boring, Uncle Ho Tuckshop offers a few sides too. I tried the Fresh Hanoi Summer Spring Rolls ($6.50). Besides the usual ingredients found in the fresh Vietnam roll such as prawns, mint leaves, spring onions, cucumber, chicken and so on, I savoured pineapple.

With this summer fruit, it not only enhance the taste, refreshing but true to its name “Summer Spring Roll”. The sauce is lightly sweetish and sourish, very appetising.

Thirst Quenchers – Chilled Tuckshop Drinks

Not a fan of Lemongrass drink but the Ice Lemongrass-Panda drink ($3.50) won my heart. It ‘wowed’ me.

It has the perfect amount of Lemongrass concocted drink. Even the sugar level was perfect. There is nothing to fault about. I would go back to Uncle Ho Tuckshop just for the drink.

Uncle Ho Tuckshop - Ice Sour Plum Soda

Viet Ice Sour Plum Soda ($3.50) was the second drink I tried. Pretty usual glass. I would stick with the Ice Lemongrass-Panda drink.

Uncle Ho Tuckshop - Ice Vietnamese Coffee

Lastly I tried the Ice Vietnamese Coffee. If you like your coffee gao gao (strong and concentrated), this is your choice coffee. Low acidity, full bodied, it is like drinking a cup of caramelised Mocha coffee with nuttiness flavour note.

Verdict

Canteen style ambience with Vietnam like atmosphere coupled with delish food and drinks, plus free Wifi. What more can you ask? If you are working around Uncle Ho Tuckshop, do pop by and try it for yourself.

If you were at Uncle Ho Tuckshop during lunch you could opt for either of the 5 lunch set that comes with a main and a drink (choose from Ice Lemongrass-Pandan Drink or Ice Sour Plum Soda).

NAHMJ Favourite

Definitely the Ice Lemongrass-Pandan Drink, Ice Vietnamese Coffee and Hanoi Bun Cha.
