Greendot, Vegetarian Cafe – Paya Lebar Square

I am not a vegetarian fan but I thought it might be a good idea to try out Greendot 绿一点 at Paya Lebar Square as I like what I read on their website about their Greendot story. To put it simply they have a great vision and mission on eating greens. And I popped over to their outlet at Paya Lebar Square to check it out.

Greendot has a few main categories of food selections; namely, Burgers, Mushroom Pots, Noodles, Rice, Desserts and Drinks.

Burgers

The firs on the list was the Portobello Mushroom Burger. Between the sesame bun were lettuce, a large sauteed portobello mushroom, tomato slices, cheese and some mayo-like sauce.

Despite simple ingredients were used, taste was great. Mainly due to the sauteed portobello mushroom as it was probably stir fried with some sauce too. Together with the mayo-like and cheese, it was tasty. All 3 diners enjoyed with one finding it a little salty. I felt it was fine. So it really depend on your salt tolerance level to determine if it too salty for you.

Mushroom Pots

The Mushroom Pots came in several sizes; for 1 in a bowl, for 2 and more in hot pot. There were 3 choices of soup based; Herbal, Laksa and Tom Yum. Rice is served with each Mushroom Pots. Choices of White Rice, Brown Rice and Sesame Rice.

Greendot - Mushroom Bowl with Brown Rice

We went for Mushroom Bowl in Tom Yum Soup with Brown Rice. This is for one. The Tom Yum Soup was stimulating as it was Spicy and Sour with a good balance. We enjoyed the soup very much. All 3 diners find the spiciness level acceptable. Just to give you a perceptive of our spicy level tolerance, all 3 diners are non-chilli padi consumer and not even cut chilli devourer.

Noodles

Greendot offer both soup and dried noodles. For soup, the base are what available for the Mushroom Pot. We find it a little boring so we thought we should try the dry noodles instead.

Spicy Taiwanese Bean Paste Noodle was our first pick. On it was, mushroom, shredded carrot & cucumber and soya slices. We were mesmerised by the Taiwanese Bean Paste. I was astonished that it could get this taste though no meat. The noodle was al dente.

As we enjoyed the noodle so much till we order a second bowl of other flavour. Our second selection was the Shitake Mushroom Noodle. The ingredients accompanied with the noodles were exactly the same. We were a little disappointed.

Comparatively, the Shitake Mushroom noodle was not as flavourful as the former. It was an unanimous agreement among all 3 diners.

Each bowl of noodles comes with a bowl of soup. We were surprise how tasty the soup was as usually not much focus was given to the side soup.

Desserts

Selection of vegetarian desserts was pretty extensive. There were mudpie, ice cream, jelly, brownies and list goes on.

Greendot - Osmanthus Jelly

Osmanthus Jelly was what we tried. The jelly seems like the Konnyaku, a little chewy. The osmanthus was a little too weak. I like the wolfberry that were added into the jelly; it provided an added texture.

Tea Bar – Drinks

Drinks in Greendot were limited to tea and coffee. All of us went for the tea. Our drinks (from top, clockwise, picture below) were Peach Oolong Tea, Strawberry Banana Green Tea and Milk Tea.

Basically, it was acceptable and importantly not too sweet. Something a little unusual was the Strawberry Banana Tea. We thought it was ok.

Conclusion

We were quite surprise about how delicious vegetarian food can be. Hardly any wheat gluten was used, instead lots of greens, mushrooms, in short natural products, were used. It does change my perception of vegetarian food a little. Personally, I feel they need to do more by providing more ‘Wow’ factor in the food. Certainly, it was the right first step in encouraging more people eating greens just as in their Chinese name 绿一点 and meat-less.
