Le Kue French Patisserie Cafe – Haji Lane (Closed)

In the month of May, there are quite a few new additions to Haji Lane and Le Kue is one of the few added. Le Kue is a French Patisserie cafe that offers pretty looking cakes and tarts at Haji Lane.

I spotted it when I was there on a Monday, their closed day. I returned to check them out.

Le Kue - Menu

Le Kue offers both dine-in and takeaway options.

According to the service crew, their chef was trained in a Paris 3 Michelin star restaurant. I asked which one and they were very secretive about it. Anyway, that’s not the most important. How does it fare? This is the more important question.

Lemon Meringue Tart

Le Kue offers both tarts and cakes. The signature items are Lemon Meringue Tart, Gateau aux Fraise (Strawberry Shortcake) and Gateau aux Carotte (Carrot Cake) which of course I got them all to try.

Le Kue - Lemon Meringue Tart

The Lemon Meringue Tart was on the sweeter side than sour. I prefer a more sourish lemon curd since there is the Meringue which is sweet to balance the curd. The tart was buttery and biscuit like. Overall, I think there is room for improvement.

Gateau aux Fraise (Strawberry Shortcake)

The Strawberry Shortcake is extremely sweet and pretty. It is an very attractive cake in terms of colour and shape.

There were 2 layers of vanilla cake sandwiched with vanilla cream and strawberries, encased in vanilla cream shaped into a rose. The cake layers were a little dense. Not my typical strawberry shortcake that I like. But my Mom loves it. It is a matter of preference here.

Gateau aux Carotte (Carrot Cake)

The last Le Kue signature that we tried was the Carrot Cake.

The cake was a little too dry with powdering of spice and lots of carrots. I didn’t enjoy the carrot cake in short.

La Tropics

In addition to the signature cakes, I got 2 others; the La Tropics and Cocao Crunchies.

First the La Tropics. As the name suggested, this cake has something to do with local. Indeed, it uses the Gula Melaka with Passionfruit.

The Passionfruit is a little stronger in taste. As a result it masked much of the Gula Melaka flavour. It is a pity.

Cocao Crunchies

The Cocao Crunchies is made up of dark chocolate with some crunch at the bottom. Interestingly, some coarse salt was sprinkle on the top.

Eating this, is very much like enjoying the Royce’s Nama Ecuador Sweet chocolate with some crunch and brininess. I did not find the salt brought out the best in the chocolate. In fact, I was neutral to it.

Besides these, there are Creme Brulee (in various flavours), Creme Puff and Marshmallows. The service crew highly recommend me Mocha Affogato which I am keen to try it soon. Oh ya, I was informed that it is a Halal cafe.

Obviously, there are some hits and misses in the Le Kue pieces. And of course, there are due to preferences as well. Overall, I believe there are some more tuning to the flavours needed to be done meanwhile.
