It’s my Mom’s first trip to Hong Kong. And I was very excited while planning out the itinerary and of course food is part of every travel. I wanted my Mom to try only the best and the must eat Hong Kong food before she leaves Hong Kong.

Finally, the list of highlights of the must eat Hong Kong food she ate for her 5 days in Hong Kong were …

1. Roast Meat (Goose and Char Siew)

Instead of bringing my Mom to Yung Kee, I bought her to Yue Kee though it is a little out of the way but serve excellent Roast Meat.

Stinky Tofu

I certainly feel that Stinky Tofu is one of the must eat Hong Kong food. I love the ones that stinky more. My Mom tried but she doesn’t enjoy. I suppose it is an acquired taste.

Egglets

Egglet is a classic Hong Kong Street Snack found almost every where in Hong Kong. All visitors, must make sure you have one before you leave.

Put Zai Gou (砵仔糕)

Put Zai Pudding is a classic or rather traditional Hong Kong sweet snack. It is made up of usually red bean. You may find other variants such as Pumpkin or plain.

Cold Noodles

This was highly recommended by an ex-colleague of mine. I have passed by the store so many times but never once has a chance to eat it. As I was always too full from my meal. Finally tried. I like it so do my Mom.

3. Wonton Mee

I am not a Wonton Mee fan but whenever in Hong Kong, I will have one bowl of Wonton Mee.

My Hong Kong colleauge recommended me the Red Bean Soup with Lotus Seeds, a dessert (or rather sweet soup) from them and we tried. It was lovely.

4. Dim Sum

Without a meal of Dim Sum when in Hong Kong? You totally do not know what you have missed out.

Dim Sum is a classic delicacy and a must have when in Hong Kong. There are many outstanding restaurants. I took her to one of the considerably the best, Maxim’s Palace to indulge in those delicacies. And it is one of the rare restaurants that has the Dim Sum Trolleys.

5. Cha Chaan Teng for Breakfast

Polo Bun, Milk Tea, Egg Tart, Egg Sandwiches, Macaroni Soup are all classic Cha Chaa Teng Food which one must try when in Hong Kong, so how could my Mom miss this out? No Way!

6. Claypot Rice

It is one of the favourite dish during winter in Hong Kong, having such warm comfort food best suit the season. Though we were there in Spring, I still decide to go for it since there are many famous restaurants that serve amazing Claypot Rice which I think my Mom to savour it when she is there.

8. Congee

I always enjoyed a bowl of piping hot Congee that is smooth and flavourful. And since Hong Kong has so many good one, I brought my Mom to try.

9. Hong Kong Styled Fast Food

 

There is a class of restaurant which I termed it as Hong Kong Styled Fast Food as they are served Hong Kong food in a fast food manner. There a number of famous ones such as Cafe De Coral, Maxim’s and Fairwood all over Hong Kong. I have my Mom tried it at the airport, before departing home.

Another Hong Kong Styled Fast Cafe that my mom was Zheng Dou, at the airport too. As I wanted her to try the Zha Liang (炸两). It is Chinese Fried Doug rolled in Steamed Rice Roll.

All in all, these are the must eat Hong Kong food my Mom tried. We missed out on Dai Pai Dong this round which I find it quite sad. So I would encourage all to have a meal at Dai Pai Dong if possible.
