BOCA Portuguese Restaurant – Bukit Pasoh Road (Shifted)

BOCA Singapore is a Portuguese Restaurant located at Bukit Pasoh Road. I hardly am exposed to Portuguese cuisine so I went with a pretty open mind with no expectation.

The first time I have Portuguese food was several years ago when I was in Macau but I could hardly remember what the taste was and worse what I have eaten then.

This Portuguese Restaurant, BOCA, has a very small menu with only about 4 starters, 6 mains and 3 desserts for selection.

We ordered 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts for sharing.

Starters

Salada de Polvo a Marinheiro (Octopus salad) – Octopus, red onions, capsicum, cilantro, extra virgin olive oil, vinegar

Our first starter was Octopus Salad ($24). The octopus was tender with its natural sweetness retained. It is certainly refreshing and appetizing.

Chourico em chamas (Flamed chorizo) – Chorizo flamed grilled in brandy

Our second starter was the Flamed Chorizo ($25). You get to admire the flame before enjoying the chorizo. Though it was a little too salty but we enjoyed it. This dish is certainly rich and strong in flavour.

Mains

Polvo a Lagareiro (Lagareiro” octopus) – Grilled octopus leg, paprika, cherry tomato, spinach, baked potato, extra virgin olive oil

For our mains, both were served at the same time. First, we tried the Octopus ($38). We kind of regret ordering 2 Octopus dishes as we wasn’t Octopus fan.

Bacalhau a Braz (“Braz” codfish) – Bacalao, onions, egg, parsley, potato chips, green olives

A must have in Portuguese restaurant is the Bacalhau ($28). There were 2 others Bacalhau for selection. Basically, with different ingredients mixed with the codfish. The portion was a little too much for 2 and it was a pretty rich dish with onions and oil making it a little too heavy for 2. If there is a little green to tone down the taste, maybe it would have been better. Nonetheless, it was certainly delish. We felt that this dish is very much an acquired taste.

Desserts

Leite creme com farofias flutantes em nuvem de caremelo (Vanilla custard, egg white “clouds” in caramel)

Last part of our meal was the desserts. First, the Vanilla Custard ($15) was creamy and smooth. With the Passionfruit, an extra sourish was added to balance the sweet custard.

Pasteis de nata (Authentic Portugese Egg Tart)

Next on the list, which is also the last, is a must try; the Portuguese Egg Tart ($4.50 each). The tart was flaky and buttery while the egg custard was rich, smooth, creamy and flavourful. I was comtemplating to have a second tart.

We enjoyed the delish food served at BOCA Singapore. The service was warm and friendly. I like especially the turquoise blue wall with porcelain swallows. Food served was swift too though it was fully booked that night, and it was a weekday when we dined at the restaurant. I would highly urge you to make a reservation before going down, or else you might be disappointed.
