In recent months, there are quite a few cafes popping up along North Bridge Road, such as Rabbit Owl Depot and Twenty Grammes and now, we are having Hyde & Co.
Before their official opening, Hyde & Co had a 50% for first 20 who RSVP and liked on their Facebook page. Each diners can bring along 1 companion. I was one of the lucky few. I “dated” my cousin for this event.
The highlight in Hyde & Co is the Crumpet; half of the food menu is devoted to the Crumpet. I believe Hyde & Co is the first in Singapore to introduce the crumpets. There is a pretty detailed description on the menu. In short, it is a classic English fare. The other half, you will find some very creative, classic breakfast items meeting the East. For drinks, there are standard stuff with a good selection of Tea, the new trend of Cold Brew (Black and White) and something interesting which is the fresh fruit juice soda.
Since Crumpet being the highlight, no way we are going to miss it. As I have a sweet tooth, I decided to go for the Gula Gula with Cappuccino, while my cousin who is as conservative as my brother when it comes to food, plus his preference is on the savoury, chose something safe, The Full Works with Fresh Orange Soda for drink. As I need some green, we ordered a Garden Salad as well.
In Hyde and Co, order is to be done over the counter and food will be served.
The Gula Gula is Crumpets with some Gula Melaka filling at random section of the Crumpets drizzled with some gula melaka and coconut flakes sprinkled on top of the crumpets. I like Fusion dishes so I like this creation. It would taste better with a more intensified, greater quantity and better quality of Gula Melaka filled and drizzled over the Crumpets. Perhaps, pairing it with a scoop of coconut ice cream and that’s awesome. Somehow , the entire dish including the taste and the presentation reminded me of Mr Bean’s Pancake. Lol.
The Full Works is very much like a classic Breakfast items. We like the Portobello Mushroom that came as a whole instead of cutting it up into cubes. The scrambled egg was very runny, almost in liquid form. Not sure if that was intentionally or what.
For the Garden Salad, it was with some mesclun greens with added cucumbers and cherry tomatoes and chopped nuts, tossed in some sourish balsamic dressing. Though on the menu it stated that the salad dressing was balsamic honey but I didn’t taste the honey, only the balsamic.
Finally the coffee, medium to low body, with low aroma and medium acidity. The flavour notes are mainly nutty hint. In short, coffee is decent.
The good news is that they are officially opening on 8 Novemember, Saturday.
NAHMJ Verdict
Hyde & Co is a cafe with some pretty innovative menu of infusing local ingredients with Classic fares. I am keen to try the Lady Hyde and their Pastries and Cakes next.
